EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This project was under taken at Ultimez Technology, Hubli. This project is carried out to know
the awareness of digital marketing among the startups of Hubli city which included only 3
sectors namely – art & entertainment, hotel and fashion & boutique.

So far the survey was conducted for potential startups in Hubli city. The project was successful
and many valuable inputs were taken from the field study. The title of the project is
“A STUDY ON ADOPTION OF DIGITAL MARKETING AMONG STARTUPS OF
HUBLI CITY”. The objective of the project is to study the awareness of digital marketing
among the startups of Hubli city, the need and interest of digital marketing among the startups
of Hubli city, the adoption of digital marketing among the startups and its effectiveness,
different digital marketing services, different digital agencies accessible in Hubli and the
awareness of Ultimez Technology among the startups Hubli city.

The research was done through questionnaire for 60 startups through google forms. I have used
both open ended and close ended questionnaire with given restricted sample size of the startups.
The tool used for measuring the data is SPSS. Sampling technique is stratified sampling and
research type is descriptive research. The findings are enclosed in this project report and
necessary suggestions are made at the end of the report.

Meaning
Digital marketing is a promotion of products or brands via one or more forms of electronic
media. The key objective is promotion of brands through electronic media it is a promotion of
products or brand via different form of electronic media.

Importance of Digital Marketing


Nowadays, customers have access to information any time and any place they want or need it.
Thanks to the Internet and globalization, most people on the globe are able to access the
information via computers, tablets or mobiles. What business owners should remember is that
everyone can influence the image of their companies via ex. Social Media and you can be sure
that your customer feedback will be more trustworthy for others to read than your own one.

Why Digital Marketing is so important and gives you so many benefits?


Because via electronic channels and by posting positive comments, feedbacks about your
company/product you (and your happy customers) can attract new customers and build long-
lasting relationship. But, be careful! It works both ways! Happy customers can help you, but
unhappy customer can harm your business very seriously. That's why as a business owner make

Encourage engagement through digital media


You can simply acquire new clients via ex. Social Media channels. When doing so, ensure you
segment them into different customer groups according to their interests. Later, you will be

As part of Digital Marketing – Social Media is underestimated. It's a big mistake because your
“Facebook” likes or “Twitter” shares can help your company grow as they build credibility and
trust. They also bring traffic to the website and are costless. What you have to do is to insert a
Social Media plugin onto your site and keep updating your customers about the company news,
discounts, etc. Bear in mind to schedule the frequency of updates and not to overwhelm them
with too much information at once. .

Get ahead of your competitors


Every year more and more businesses give up traditional advertising methods and focus on
SEO, Google AdWords or Social Media spending huge money on these resources. This is the
reason why the market gets increasingly competitive and big players get ahead of little
companies. As a small business on the market, you cannot compete with them but there is
something you can do. You can use Google Alerts tool to monitor your competitors. This tool
will allow you to track your competitor’s products and marketing strategies so that you can
learn something from them and improve your own business strategy.

It's important to understand that digital marketing doesn't only apply to your website! However
most of the marketers create a website or an e-commerce and invest in SEO and/or AdWords.

History and evolution of digital marketing

The beginnings of digital marketing technology can be traced back to the 1980s, when
computers became sophisticated enough to store huge volumes of customer information.
This shift in technology corresponded with a shift in mindset from pushing product to
“relationship marketing,” which prioritized customer connections. Marketers abandoned their
limited offline techniques like list brokering in favor of database marketing.
By 1986, ACT! a contact and customer management company, introduced the first database
marketing software to the business world. It was essentially a digital rolodex, only it could
store large volumes of customer contact information.

Together with Robert Shaw, the father of marketing automation, Robert Kestenbaum went on
to develop several landmark database marketing solutions for BT and Barclays. Shaw
incorporated new features into these database marketing models, including telephone and field
sales channel automation, contact strategy optimization, campaign management, marketing
resource.
The digital databases of the 1980s transformed buyer-seller relationships, allowing brands to
track their consumers like never before. But the process was still a manual one. On March 10,
2000, the dotcom bubble hit its peak then burst the following weekend when major
stockholders like Dell and Cisco sold off the majority of their stock. By the mid-2000s, digital
behavior changed the power dynamic between buyer and seller dramatically. Users began
researching products and making decisions about them online, and on their phones, before ever
talking to a salesperson. Marketers suddenly found themselves in uncharted territory. They
were scrambling to track the digital body language of their prospects, and struggled to take
responsibility for a larger portion of the buying cycle. In 2007, marketing companies like
Marketo, Pardot, and Act On offered a solution to this conundrum: marketing automation.
Marketing automation, which enabled marketers to launch multi-channel campaigns, segment
their audiences, and serve up highly personalized content, was an attempt to get a handle on
the Wild West of the Web. It was the first technology built by marketers for marketers that was
rooted in digital. But while marketing automation was an important development, it couldn’t
adapt fast enough to the exponential evolution of consumer channels and devices. Social media,
for example, was still in its infancy in the mid-2000s. Marketing automation did not plan for
social to emerge as one of the leading marketing outlets of the 21st century

Barriers of Digital Marketing for Startups

1. # Barrier 1. Taking Digital Marketing lightly

Obviously senior professionals recognize that digital technology is all around them, but
their own experiences tend to be limited to a consumer or individual perspective.
Though many consumer technologies get converted to professional applications, their
use in business settings is generally more complex than personal ones. And
understanding technology as an individual consumer does not readily translate to a
broader perspective in terms of economic, industry and organizational applications and
implications. The commonly-held notion that digital technologies are "just tools"
further undermines their importance, disregarding the fact that mastering modern-day
means of communication and collaboration is far more complex and challenging than
traditional approaches. The pen may be mightier than the sword, but it is a far more
primitive instrument than an electronic device.

2. #Barrier 2 Lack of knowledge and understanding of Digital Era realities.

In spite of their smart phones, tablets, and favorite mobile apps, most senior
professionals are still digital rookies. They are unable to put today's technologies in
historical context, both with respect to the Digital Era and in the larger scheme of human
history and technological evolution. They are often unaware of or have limited
knowledge of technology trends that could have a significant impact on their industries
and organizations - either by significantly enhancing or disrupting their current business
models. Current trends that have potentially widespread implications but are not widely
understood include digital currency (e.g., bitcoin), 3D printing, cognition as a service
(CaaS), and crowdfunding. And of course there are a host of risks and issues that need
to be understood in a digital context, including privacy, taxes, cybersecurity and more.
Even when it comes to the tools themselves, most leaders remain uninformed about the
wide range of platforms and technologies that enable more efficient and effective
approaches to communication and collaboration.

# Barrier 3 -Framing alternatives in a way that leads to risk

Professor Jerry Wind has asserted that "a successful business is the hardest organization
to change", and that idea certainly applies to digital transformation. Kahneman and
Tversky's Nobel prize winning Prospect Theory is illustrative in this regard. Simply put,
the idea behind the theory is that when alternatives are framed in the domain of gains,
decision makers tend to be risk averse When framed in the domain of losses, however,
they tend to be risk seeking. Consider the following scenarios:

Gain Framed Scenario: An organization has revenues of 1 million and is keeping pace
with current industry and marketplace dynamics. It is operating at capacity. Digital
engagement and transformation have the potential to increase those revenues to 1.20
million, but they could divert attention from the core business and competencies,
causing revenues to decrease to 900 thousand

Loss Framed Scenario: An organization used to have revenues of 1 million, but they've
fallen to 800 thousand due to industry and marketplace changes. It is operating at
capacity. Digital engagement and transformation have the potential to increase revenues
back to 1 million, but they could divert attention from the core business and
competencies, causing revenues to decrease to 700 thousand.

# Barrier 4 Poor/no roadmaps for effective digital engagement and


transformation.

This barrier seems to manifest itself in multiple ways. I'd start with the overwhelming
tendency of leaders to focus on the short term and tactical approaches rather than
taking a longer-term, strategic view. As I've discussed with Didier Bonnet of Cap
Gemini, digital transformation doesn't have to be either dramatic or immediate. It
doesn't require revolutionary or disruptive change. It's perfectly appropriate for it to
be evolutionary, incremental, and iterative. The key is to recognize that digital
engagement and transformation will ultimately be a strategic imperative, and to start
developing plans now to get from today's realities to tomorrow's necessities.

# Barrier 5 No, inadequate or inappropriate resource allocation

This barrier is effectively the culmination of the preceding four. Although many
organizations may have moved away from the "give it to the intern" approaches to
digital engagement they employed a few years ago, they're still far from employing
an optimal resource allocation strategy. There seems to be a general tendency to
add these responsibilities to existing roles that appear to be related (e.g., marketing,
sales, IT), even if the people in those roles don't have the expertise or capacity to
execute them well. I've also seen instances where organizations "reward" someone
who has done well in another capacity with spearheading digital transformation
efforts based on their enthusiasm and interest, even if they aren't qualified. And in
other organizations I've seen leaders assign people digital responsibilities simply
because they are being underutilized in other areas.

These approaches can often result in sub optimization and/or failures that are
more likely to be (mis)attributed to the inappropriateness or inadequacy of the
technologies and tactics the organization is trying to employ rather than being
recognized as management failures in understanding and deploying the proper
resources to pursue digital initiatives.

BENEFITS OF DIGITAL MARKETING FOR PRESENT BUSINESS

1. Global reach - a website allows you to find new markets and trade globally for only a
small investment.

2. Lower cost - a properly planned and effectively targeted digital marketing campaign can
reach the right customers at a much lower cost than traditional marketing methods.

3. Trackable, measurable results - measuring your online marketing with web analytics and
other online metric tools makes it easier to establish how effective your campaign has been.
You can obtain detailed information about how customers use your website or respond to
your advertising. Web analytics can be set up to show you exactly how much money you
make from each digital tactic.

4. Personalization - if your customer database is linked to your website, then whenever


someone visits the site, you can greet them with targeted offers. The more they buy from
you, the more you can refine your customer profile and market effectively to them.

5. Openness - by getting involved with social media and managing it carefully, you can build
customer loyalty and create a reputation for being easy to engage with.

6. Social currency - digital marketing lets you create engaging campaigns using different
types of rich media content. On the internet these campaigns can gain social currency -
being passed from user to user and becoming viral.

LIMITATIONS OF DIGITAL MARKETING:

• Limitations of Internet Access: The digital marketing mostly depends on the internet.
In this modern world, there are still some areas where the facility of the internet is not
available or the internet connection is very poor. So, in those remote areas, digital
marketing has no function. It is very difficult to target those customers who live in those
places. Because without internet, digital marketing is nothing but a puppet. This is a
major problem of digital marketing. There is no way of escaping from it.

• High Competition of Brands: Talking about advantages and disadvantages of digital


marketing, this is a great fault of digital marketing. A customer and consumer must
know about the high competition of brands. When a customer searches for a specific
goods or products, then the services having the same marketing strategies, appear on
the customer’s home page. So, this confuses the customer and offers a better and
cheaper quality product of a different company. For this reasons, some customers lack
their trust on so many advertisements and take them as frauds. If the cost of same quality
product varies, anyone can be prey of its tricks.

• Promotion Strategy Can Be Copied: One of the main drawbacks of digital marketing is
piracy. It is often seen that any company copies your products and sell them as their
products. Copying of an image is not difficult. Not only this, even they can create an
adverse effect on your products that will harm your online reputation. There are so many
hackers to track or copy the valuable marketing strategies. So, to keep your marketing
strategy is must. But, very often it does not safe from the piracy makers. Piracy makers are
always there to copy your business strategy.

• Limited Consumer Link and Conversation: We all know that digital marketing is
excessively dependent on internet. So, the marketers may found it very much difficult to
access more consumers which they want. They cannot start a conversation with their
desired customers about the company products or brand image. But, the people who do not
use internet, are unable to know about your product.

• Advertisement for Limited Products: While we are discussing about advantages and
disadvantages of digital marketing, there is a practical drawback of digital marketing. It is
only profitable for consumer goods. We cannot sell the industrial goods or pharmaceutical
products through digital channels. So, if you wish to marketize any industrial or
pharmaceutical products, it is impossible to sell through digital marketing. So, there is no
scope to sell all the products.

• Less Interest On the Internet: There are some customers who are less interested in
internet. They simply avoid Internet advertisement. Even they do not trust the internet
advertisement. This creates a loss of valuable traffic. Because digital marketing wholly
depends on internet. Without internet, it does not work.

• Cash On Delivery: Cash on delivery is one of the disadvantages of digital marketing.


Because it does not ensure you for 100% cash back. This may create a hazard in front of
you.

• Negative Feedback:
In respect of social media, a single post, tweet or comment or any claim or any negative
feedback about your services or products can destroy your online reputation for a long time.
To make reputation, it takes much time, but to break it does not take much time. Even some
negative feedback may destroy the chance of growth of your business.

Digital Marketing trend in India

Since last year the buzz-word in India is digitalization. From mandatory Aadhar card-linking
schemes to the rise of crypto-currencies, everyone felt the power of digital in India. With digital
fast becoming the norm, businesses are adopting digital marketing as their preferred strategy
for business growth. Over $135 Billion being spend in online advertising globally, Digital
Marketing is emerging as one of the fastest growing industries today. Asia is leading the trend

1. According to the survey 35 are not using Digital Marketing & 25 in total are using Digital
Marketing Services
2. According to the survey in l6 of them are using paid advertisement, 11 of them are using
SEO and 7 of them are using SMM.
3. According to the survey 13 startups are not aware of it, 22 people are not inrested of using
digital marketing services
4. According to the survey 1 startup is interested in business branding and 24 are interested in
increasing sales.
5. According to the survey the 12 startups are very happy and 13 startups are okay seeing the
effectiveness of digital marketing
6. According to the survey 23 Startups are using in house Digital marketing 2 startups are

2. As it is seen that startups are more in paid advertisement and Also SEO and SMM but
they can also use organic advertisement
3. Startups should try to learn more about Digital Marketing
4. Startup should wait till the effect of the digital services gives them good returns.
5. Hotel sector should try to engage them self-more in digital marketing
6. Digital agencies should use banner or different promotion technique to promote to
increase their awareness among the startups
7. Ultimez technology should undertake the awareness program among the startups with
respected to the importance of digital marketing

CONCLUSION

The overall experience with the respondents was quite challenging the outcome of the
survey says that the awareness of digital marketing among the startups of Hubli city is
very less. Startups should try to engage them self with different digital services as today
era is the digital era and it is growing in every field. So it is highly necessary for startups
to start using digital Marketing
