finding your size:

• Sizes are based on typical US adult t-shirt sizes. So if the person you’re sewing for is not
available for measuring, you can usually go by their t-shirt size.
• The shrug itself is not very fitted, so there’s some leeway with the sizing. You can wear a
size up or down with usually just a slight difference in fit.
• If you’re unsure of what size you are, go by your chest circumference, in inches.

Other good options for applique include a straight stitch, which involves sewing around the edge of the

You can also applique by hand; I prefer a whipstitch. Thread a hand-sewing needle with some matching
thread and knot it. Bring the thread up from the back of the project; about 1/8” in from the edge of the
applique shape. Bring it down perpendicular from the curve, just outside of the applique shape. This
completes one stitch.
For the next stitch, bring the needle back up about 1/8” away from the previous stitch and 1/8” in from
the edge just as in the first stitch. Once again, bring it down just outside the applique shape. Continue
this way until you’ve sewn around the shape.

25. sew and turn the bow

for:
• Sew around the perimeter of the bow using a 3/8” seam allowance (since the piece is smaller). Leave
a 1-2” area on the side for turning the bow right side out later. A guideline is on the paper pattern, but
you can just eyeball it as well.
• Clip the seam allowances at the inner corners of the bow to increase flexibility when the bow is
turned.
• Turn the bow right side out and make sure the seam allowances in the opening are tucked inside.
Prepare to ladder stitch it closed. Thread a hand-sewing needle and knot it at the end. Insert the
needle from the inside of the opening and out of the bow near one edge of the opening. This will leave
the knot inside the bow.

26. sew and turn the bow

for:
• Continue from here doing a ladder stitch. Take a 1/8” stitch into 2 1
the fold of one side of the opening, then go across and take
another. Keep going down the opening until you reach the end.
• When you’re finished, stitch a knot into the end of the seam. Then
4
insert the needle near the finished knot and out of the bow about 3 seam allowance
1-2” away. (folded inside)

• Pull the thread through and hold it taut while snipping the thread.
The excess thread should sink back inside the bow -- all hidden!
