PBL KT4193: Komunikasi Radio & Satelit

Project-1: TCP/UDP performance evaluation over VSAT/DVB-S2.

Satellite broadband networks are being considered as the primary means of connecting the other-3-
billion people who are not connected; and hence it is of great interest to us to perform feasibility
studies and performance analysis for TCP/UDP-IP over satellite to provide broadband over satellites.
The very traditional TCP/UDP/IP protocol designs do not suit the satellite channel and hence we
propose to study the performance of TCP/UDP over satellite.
In this project students are expected to perform an in depth literature survey on the proposed topic and
summarize the existing technical work and the achieved performance in such areas as a report.
Furthermore, students are also encouraged to perform simulations in Matlab/NS-2 to evaluate the
performances on their own and come up with any new techniques to improve the performances such
as increased throughput, improved packet error rate etc.

Project-2: Cooperative Satellite-Terrestrial Systems

Connecting people anywhere anytime is one of the main objectives of Future-Internet service
providers. In such a context, global seamless coverage is quite essential and the most promising
solution for it is to merge the terrestrial and satellite systems and provide hybrid satellite-terrestrial
system solutions. Such a hybrid-architecture enables the terrestrial, ground and space born systems to
cooperate giving rise to a cooperative satellite-terrestrial system to provide communication services.
In this project students are expected to explore the proposed topic and summarize the existing
technical work and the achieved performance in such areas as a report. Furthermore, students are also
encouraged to perform simulations in Matlab/NS-2 to evaluate the performances on their own and
come up with any new techniques to improve the performances such as increased throughput,
improved packet error rate etc.

Project-3: Spectrally Efficient Cognitive Satellite VSAT/Broadband Systems

Spectrally efficient radio communication designs are being highly motivated these days by the radio
regulatory bodies around the world to increase the efficiency in the spectral usage. The next
generation terrestrial and wireless devices are being made to provide spectrally efficient usages based
on cognitive radio concepts. In this context it is important for us to study the possibilities of having
spectrally efficient cognitive satellite communications systems (mainly for the ground terminals in the
satellite networks).
In this project students are expected to explore the proposed topic and summarize the existing
technical work and the achieved performance in such areas as a report. Furthermore, students are also
encouraged to perform simulations in Matlab/NS-2 to evaluate the performances on their own and
come up with any new techniques to improve the performances such as increased throughput and
spectral efficiency etc.

1- Assessment is based on presentation and report. Choose ONE of the listed

projects.

2- Report for about 10 pages (single spacing) should be submitted (see Jurnal
Kejuruteraan and UKM format) + softcopy (presentation and report). Report can
be written in either English or B.M. Report should has ABSTRACT,
INTRODUCTION, METHODOLOGY, RESULT, DISCUSSION,
REFERENCE etc.

3- Questions with regard to the PBL will do as in-class discussion.
