 Centre Line– Long and short dash lines. Usually indicates centre of holes, circles and arcs.

Line is
thin and dark. Locates centre of circles, axis of a cylinder (thick, dark).

 Dimension Line– Thin and dark lines use to show the size (span) of an object with a numeric
value. Usually terminates with arrowheads or tick markings. Shows size of the objects with a
numerical value and arrowheads (thin and dark).

 Construction line – Very light and thin line. This line is use to draw the basic form of a floor plan
and it is not the final plan. The line becomes preliminary layout work, to construct the views of
an object.

 Object or visible lines – Thick dark line use to show outline of object, visible edges and surfaces.
This line is use to show the wall of the house in a floor plan. The line indicates the visible
features of an object. The line is thick and black.

 Leader line – Medium line with arrowhead to show notes or label for size or special information
about a feature. Shows notes or labels for sizes or others special information.

 Break lines –Short and long medium line use to show cutaway view of a long section. Shows
cutaway areas on parts (medium thickness)


 Hidden line – Short dash lines use to show non visible surfaces. Usually shows as medium
thickness. To indicate the hidden features of an object. Thin black lines of 3 to 4 mm strokes and
1 to 2 mm spaces.

 Etension line – Thin and dark line use to show the starting and ending of dimension. Shows
starting and ending of dimension (thin and dark).

B. What is the difference between a visible object line and hidden object line?

Visible object line is thick and dark line. This line indicate that the outline of object, visible edges and
surfaces. Hidden object line is short dash lines that is use to indicate the hidden feature of the object.

C. Why are different line weights used on a drawing?

Line weight is the visual lightness, darkness, or heaviness of a line within a drawing. In any architectural
drawing, from a sketch to a construction drawing, the interplay of different relative line weights is used
to communicate depth, importance, and proximity.
