INTRODUCTION TO NSS
National service scheme, under the Ministry of youth Affair & Sport Govt. of India,
popularly known as NSS was launched in Gandhi ji Birth Centenary Year 1969, in 37
Universities involving 40,000 students with primary focus on the development of personality
of student through community services. Today, NSS has more than 3.2 million students of
volunteers on its roll spread over 298 Universities and 42 (+2) Senior Secondary councils and
Directorate of vocational Education all over the country. From its inception, more than 3.75
crores students from the university, college and Institutions of higher learning have benefited
from the NSS activities, as student volunteers.

Community service rendered by university and +2 level student has covered several aspects
like adoption of village for intensive development work, carrying out the medico-social
surveys, setting up of medical centres, programmer of mass immunization, sanitation drives,
adult education programmes for the weaker section of the community, blood donation,
helping patients in hospitals, helping inmates of orphanages and the physically handicapped
etc. NSS volunteers did commendable relief work during natural calamities /emergencies
such as cyclones, floods, famine, earthquake, etc. from time to time all over country. The
NSS students have also done useful work in organizing campaigns for eradication of social
evil, and popularization of the nationally accepted objectives like nationalism, democracy,
secularism, social harmony and development of scientific temper.

Aim
The main aim of this programme is- “personality development through community service”.
It aims to inculcate a sense of social welfare among students provide service to society
without any bias. NSS volunteers work together in order to help those in need and help them
lead a better life ahead. This programme involves various activities which are beneficial not
only for the society but also for those associate with it. They learn how to lead a good life
despite the scarcity of resources. This unit also provides help in natural and man-made
disaster by providing food, clothing and first aid to the victims.

Objectives
The broad objective of NSS is to:

 Understand the community in which they work;

 Understand themselves in relation to there community
 Identify the need and problem of the community and involve them in problem
solving process;
 Develop among themselves a sense of social and civil responsibility;
 Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community
problems;
 Develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibility

3
 Gain skill in mobilizing community participation;
 Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;
 Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disaster.

The Motto, NSS Symbol & Badge

 The Motto:
The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is: „NOT ME BUT YOU‟. This
reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and
appreciation of the other person‟s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow
human being. It underline that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the
welfare of society on the whole. Therefore, it should be the aim of the NSS to demonstrate
this motto in its day-to-day programmer.

 NSS Symbol:
The symbol of the National Service Scheme is based on the „Rath‟ wheel of the konark sun
temple situated in Orissa. These giant wheels of sun temple portray the cycle of creation,
preservation and release, and signify the moment in life across time and space. The design of
the symbol, a simplified form of the sun-chariot wheel primarily depicts movement. The
wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and
implies the continuous striving of NSS for social transformation and upliftment.

 NSS Badge:
The NSS Symbol is embossed on the NSS badge. The NSS volunteers wear it while
undertaking any programmer of community service. The Konark wheel in the symbol has
eight bars which represent in 24 hour of the day. Hence, the badge reminds the wearer to be
in readiness for service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hour. The readcolor in the
badge ind

icates that the NSS volunteers are full of blood i.e. lively, active, energetic and full of high
spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to
contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

CONCLUSION

NSS proved a great learning for students. they learned about teamwork, helping others and
most of all they learned to put others before themself. They have built the ability to do
strenuous tasks beyond their limits.

They have learnt to take the responsibility of tasks, no matter how hard the conditions may
be.

Furthermore, in local activities such conducting survey, rallies, plantation drives, I learnt
how to organise an event successfully and patiently with the guidance of my NSS members
and the co-ordinator.

NSS made students understand that there is more to life than just thinking of oneself instead
helping others and to contribute in the growth of society should ones priority. It has directed
the youth‟s energy in the right direction.
