The relative importance of conceptual, human and technical skills changes as a person
progresses from lower, to middle, to top management. (Figure 1.4, Higgins, page 20) Although
all three management skills are important at all three levels of management, conceptual skills
become relatively more important at the top level of management. The consistently high level
of importance of human skills helps us understand why people problems are so often cited as a
core cause of business failure

Brand Recall is the extent to which the name of the brand comes in the mind of the consumers
in the context of that product category. For example, the brand ‘Bisleri’ comes in our mind
immediately whenever we talk about mineral water.
IMT as a brand has a good brand positioning as it has always featured among the best B
schools in India with the like of IIMs, IIFT, ISB, MDI, SP Jain etc. The various areas where it has
performed consistently, be it placements, cultural exchange programme, student teacher ratio
etc makes it a brand to reckon with.

Introduction
Over the past decade there is an abundance of evidence, that could be produced to say that
successful organizations are managed by efficient managers. Success in the long run can be
ensured only through effective management. Successful managers foster sustainable growth
through their skills, attributes and personal qualities. According to Pfefferand Veiga(1999),
common sense and common knowledge are different. Knowing things is different from doing
things. Being able to analyze a case, identify a problem, suggest a correct solution makes a
manager more effective.

School Rankings are considered by many different groups. Parents and students use the data
provided in a report of School Rankings to determine which school the students should attend.
Most parents don’t want to send their kid to a school that has a low-performance level. Looking
at these reports can help them see which schools are doing well and which ones are not.

While writing your term paper, if you’re asked to write an essay on leadership, how will you
begin? Will you define leadership from the Oxford Dictionary, will you begin by referring to
your favorite leader’s qualities or will you outline the general characteristics that you think will
make a leader? Well, if you are in doubt, please know that it is fine to begin the essay with any
of the above methods. The important aspect to keep in mind is that you’re describing a quality
and you should supplement it with ample examples, references and if possible, quotes.

A leader with vision has a clear, vivid picture of where to go, as well as a firm grasp on
what success looks like and how to achieve it. But it’s not enough to have a vision;
leaders must also share it and act upon it. Jack Welch, former chairman and CEO of
General Electric Co., said, "Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision,
passionately own the vision and relentlessly drive it to completion."
A leader must be able to communicate his or her vision in terms that cause followers to
buy into it. He or she must communicate clearly and passionately, as passion is
contagious.
A good leader must have the discipline to work toward his or her vision single-mindedly,
as well as to direct his or her actions and those of the team toward the goal. Action is the
mark of a leader. A leader does not suffer “analysis paralysis” but is always doing
something in pursuit of the vision, inspiring others to do the same.
Integrity is the integration of outward actions and inner values. A person of integrity is
the same on the outside and on the inside. Such an individual can be trusted because he or
she never veers from inner values, even when it might be expeditious to do so. A leader
must have the trust of followers and therefore must display integrity.
Dedication means spending whatever time or energy is necessary to accomplish the task
at hand. A leader inspires dedication by example, doing whatever it takes to complete the
next step toward the vision. By setting an excellent example, leaders can show followers
that there are no nine-to-five jobs on the team, only opportunities to achieve something
great.
Magnanimity means giving credit where it is due. A magnanimous leader ensures that
credit for successes is spread as widely as possible throughout the company. Conversely,
a good leader takes personal responsibility for failures. This sort of reverse magnanimity
helps other people feel good about themselves and draws the team closer together. To
spread the fame and take the blame is a hallmark of effective leadership.
Leaders with humility recognize that they are no better or worse than other members of
the team. A humble leader is not self-effacing but rather tries to elevate everyone.
Leaders with humility also understand that their status does not make them a god.
Mahatma Gandhi is a role model for Indian leaders, and he pursued a “follower-centric”
leadership role.
Openness means being able to listen to new ideas, even if they do not conform to the
usual way of thinking. Good leaders are able to suspend judgment while listening to
others’ ideas, as well as accept new ways of doing things that someone else thought of.
Openness builds mutual respect and trust between leaders and followers, and it also keeps
the team well supplied with new ideas that can further its vision.
Creativity is the ability to think differently, to get outside of the box that constrains
solutions. Creativity gives leaders the ability to see things that others have not seen and
thus lead followers in new directions. The most important question that a leader can ask
is, “What if … ?” Possibly the worst thing a leader can say is, “I know this is a dumb
question ... ”
Fairness means dealing with others consistently and justly. A leader must check all the
facts and hear everyone out before passing judgment. He or she must avoid leaping to
conclusions based on incomplete evidence. When people feel they that are being treated
fairly, they reward a leader with loyalty and dedication.
Assertiveness is not the same as aggressiveness. Rather, it is the ability to clearly state
what one expects so that there will be no misunderstandings. A leader must be assertive
to get the desired results. Along with assertiveness comes the responsibility to clearly
understand what followers expect from their leader.
Many leaders have difficulty striking the right amount of assertiveness, according to a
study in the February 2007 issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology,
published by the APA (American Psychological Association). It seems that being
underassertive or overassertive may be the most common weakness among aspiring
leaders.
A sense of humor is vital to relieve tension and boredom, as well as to defuse hostility.
Effective leaders know how to use humor to energize followers. Humor is a form of
power that provides some control over the work environment. And simply put, humor
fosters good camaraderie.
Intrinsic traits such as intelligence, good looks, height and so on are not necessary to
become a leader. Anyone can cultivate the proper leadership traits.

How often have you heard the comment, “He or she is a born leader?” There are certain
characteristics found in some people that seem to naturally put them in a position where they’re
looked up to as a leader.
Whether in fact a person is born a leader or develops skills and abilities to become a leader is open
for debate. There are some clear characteristics that are found in good leaders. These qualities can
be developed or may be naturally part of their personality. Let us explore them further.
***
2. A good leader is enthusiastic about their work or cause and also about their role as leader.
People will respond more openly to a person of passion and dedication. Leaders need to be
able to be a source of inspiration, and be a motivator towards the required action or cause.
Although the responsibilities and roles of a leader may be different, the leader needs to be
seen to be part of the team working towards the goal. This kind of leader will not be afraid
to roll up their sleeves and get dirty.
3. A good leader is confident. In order to lead and set direction a leader needs to appear
confident as a person and in the leadership role. Such a person inspires confidence in
others and draws out the trust and best efforts of the team to complete the task well. A
leader who conveys confidence towards the proposed objective inspires the best effort from
team members.
5. Good leaders are tolerant of ambiguity and remain calm, composed and steadfast to the
main purpose. Storms, emotions, and crises come and go and a good leader takes these as
part of the journey and keeps a cool head.
6. A good leader as well as keeping the main goal in focus is able to think analytically. Not
only does a good leader view a situation as a whole, but is able to break it down into sub
parts for closer inspection. Not only is the goal in view but a good leader can break it down
into manageable steps and make progress towards it.
7. A good leader is committed to excellence. Second best does not lead to success. The good
leader not only maintains high standards, but also is proactive in raising the bar in order to
achieve excellence in all areas.
These seven personal characteristics are foundational to good leadership. Some characteristics may
be more naturally present in the personality of a leader. However, each of these characteristics can
also be developed and strengthened. A good leader whether they naturally possess these qualities
or not, will be diligent to consistently develop and strengthen them in their leadership role.
