the rules, of course.)

But one group of animals is less visible and

hardly celebrated – stray cats. They exist in the
in-between spaces: alleys, vacant properties, the
boardwalks and parks. They have been around
as long as the city itself, having been famously
imported by the city’s founding fathers to clear

the swampy island of rats.

Ever since then, their numbers have grown

It’s a Dog’s Life

Doggie Dos and
Cock-a-doodle Don’ts
The most common animal-related calls our Code Compliance team receives are for
dogs – the noise they make, the ones that are running loose off their leash and, the
unwanted presents they leave behind when their owners fail to pick up after them.

Then there are the occasional calls about birds – Mr. Clucky, the photogenic rooster
being the most famous of them. Charming or not, the city does not allow livestock to
reside in the city. And, while up to ten domestic pets are allowed per residence, no
more than four dogs at a time are allowed.

More rarely, exotic animals have also been a problem. Code enforcement has also
been called out for the occasional exotic animal, such as a free-roaming monkey
and a captive lion. And, Code Compliance teamed up with our Police Department
earlier this year on Ocean Drive with an eye to stopping people from using animals to
make money off tourists, including the guys with the pythons around their necks, and
someone with a ring-tailed lemur, among others, charging for photos with their pets.

Code Compliance officers are not trappers, however. When the occasional raccoon or
possum makes a visit to a neighborhood, residents need to call in the professionals.

SCOTT RAKOW
YOUTH CENTER
Renovations to the Scott Rakow Youth
Center, 2700 Sheridan Avenue, will be
completed this fall.

Campers enjoyed a full slate of programming and felt

minimal impact from construction work that took place
alongside the summer activities. New amenities include an
updated game room, a computer lab, music room and a new
snack bar. The crews also refurbished the bowling lanes.

With safety in mind, the bus drop-off area was redesigned;

pathways for pedestrians were added; and the parking lot
was expanded.

“I am just delighted,” said Scott Rakow Youth Center Facilities

Manager Ellen Vargas. “This project brings new amenities
