Introduction

About basketball

Basketball is a skillful and high-paced game with a huge emphasis on team work.
Two opposing teams play one another and try to pass, dribble and shoot the ball into the
net. The team with the most points win. With plenty of opportunity to showcase some
great moves, basketball is fun and inclusive for all!

The benefits of basketball

Basketball is an awesome sport for developing strength, speed, and agility. It is a

superb cardiovascular workout making it an excellent choice to maintain fitness. The
social benefits to basketball are numerous; allowing you to cooperate with others for one
common goal. The inclusive nature of basketball can boost your confidence tenfold,
especially if you manage a slam dunk!

What should I wear?

We recommend that you wear comfortable footwear and light sportswear to

maximise flexibility and to ensure that you are kept cool. Don't forget to bring plenty of
water to keep hydrated during your session.

What bascketball means ?

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players
each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective
of shooting a basketball (approximately 9.4 inches (24 cm) in diameter) through the
defender's hoop (a basket 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter mounted 10 feet (3.048 m)
high to a backboard at each end of the court) while preventing the opposing team from
shooting through their own hoop. A field goal is worth two points, unless made from
behind the three-point line, when it is worth three. After a foul, timed play stops and the
player fouled or designated to shoot a technical foul is given one or more one-point free
throws. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but if regulation play
expires with the score tied, an additional period of play (overtime) is mandated.

Warm up exercises

Starting with the specific exercises from movement to down one side of the court,
and jog out the rest of the lap to really warm-up.

Dynamic warm-up exercises:

-lunges

-high knee pulls

-power skips

-reverse knee pulls

Static warm-up exercises:

-arm circles forward and backwards

-shoulder stretches

-in and out with arms stretches at the elbow level

-legs spread with bending the trunk stretches the knee

-rotation of the knee

-rotation of the foot

Rules of play

1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.

2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands.

3. A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which
he catches it, allowance to be made for a person who catches the ball when
running at a good speed if they tries to stop.

4. The ball must be held in or between the hands; the arms or body must not be
used for holding it.

5. No shouldering, holding, striking, pushing, or tripping in any way of an opponent.

The first infringement of this rule by any person shall count as a foul; the second
shall disqualify him until the next basket is made or, if there was evident intent to
injure the person, for the whole of the game. No substitution shall be allowed.

6. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violation of rules three and four and such
described in rule five.

7. If either side makes three consecutive fouls, it shall count a goal for the
opponents (consecutive means without the opponents in the mean time making a
foul).

8. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the
basket and stays there (without falling), providing those defending the goal do not
touch or disturb the goal. If the ball rests on the edges, and the opponent moves
the basket, it shall count as a goal.

9. When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field of play and
played by the first person touching it. In case of dispute the umpire shall throw it
straight into the field. The thrower-in is allowed five seconds. If he holds it longer,
it shall go to the opponent. If any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire
shall call a foul on that side.

10. The umpire shall be the judge of the men and shall note the fouls and notify the
referee when three consecutive fouls have been made. He shall have power to
disqualify people according to rule 5.

11. The referee shall be judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in play, in
bounds, to which side it belongs, and shall keep the time. He shall decide when a
goal has been made and keep account of the baskets, with any other duties that
are usually performed by a scorekeeper.

12. The time shall be two fifteen-minute halves, with five minutes rest between.

13. The side making the most points in that time is declared the winner.

How much does a bascketball match least ?

The average length of a college basketball game

Unlike the four quarters used in other typical matches, the college games take two 20-
minute halves.

Half-time period takes 15 minutes like the National Basketball Association. The overtime
period lasts for five minutes.

Length of an NCAA basketball game

National Collegiate Athletic Association is the body of college basketball. This game is
considered to be too long.

There are many timeouts that consume almost half an hour of the game.

In case the ball hits one of the basket rims or it changes the team in possession of the
ball, shot clocks come in. the ball must be shot. This time varies.

NBA basketball game length

An NBA game takes 48 minutes.

This game is usually divided into four quarters lasting 12 minutes each. If there happen
to be a tie amongst the teams playing, then this time is bound to increase.

In basketball, a tie leads to overtime where the game is played severally until a winner
is found. The overtime lasts for 5 minutes.

Also, half-time, fouls, timeouts and ball out-of-bound results to a lot of instructions that
this time lasts longer than it should. Halftime takes 15 minutes.

There is a five minutes overtime.

Shot clocks- 24 seconds.

Prevention of the bascketball injuries

1. Have a pre-season physical examination and follow your doctor's

recommendations for basketball injury prevention.

2. Hydrate adequately - waiting until you are thirsty is often too late to hydrate
properly.

3. Pay attention to environmental recommendations, especially in relation to

excessively hot and humid weather, to help avoid heat illness.

4. Maintain proper fitness - injury rates are higher in athletes who have not
adequately prepared physically.

5. After a period of inactivity, progress gradually back to full-contact basketball

through activities such as aerobic conditioning, strength training, and agility
training.

6. Avoid overuse injuries - more is not always better! Many sports medicine
specialists believe that it is beneficial to take at least one season off each year.
Try to avoid the pressure that is now -exerted on many young athletes to over-
train. Listen to your body and decrease training time and intensity if pain or
discomfort develops. This will reduce the risk of injury and help avoid "burn-out".

7. Talk with your coach and/or athletic trainer about an ACL injury prevention
program and incorporating the training principles into team warm-ups.

8. The athlete should return to play only when clearance is granted by a health care
professional.

Bascketball injuries

Ankle Sprains

Treatment for an ankle sprain involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE).
The need for X-rays and evaluation by a physician is determined on a caseby-case
basis and depends on the severity and location of pain. Pain and swelling over the bone
itself may need further evaluation. An injury to the ankle in a child who is still growing
could represent a simple sprain or could be the result of an injury to the growth plates
located around the ankle and should be evaluated by a physician.

Jammed Fingers

Jammed fingers occur when the ball contacts the end of the finger and causes
significant swelling of a single joint. Application of ice and buddy taping the finger to the
adjacent finger may provide some relief and allow the athlete to return to play. If pain
and swelling persist, evaluation by a physician or athletic trainer is recommended and
an x-ray of the finger may be needed.

Knee Injuries

Basketball requires extensive stop and go and cutting maneuvers which can put the
ligaments and menisci of the knee at risk. Injury to the medial collateral ligament is most
common following a blow to the outside of the knee and can be often be treated with
ice, bracing and a gradual return to activity.

Deep Thigh Bruising

Treatment includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Commercially available

girdles with thigh pads are now available for protection.

Fractures

Fracture can occur from a rapid increase in activity level or training or from overtraining.
Fractures in basketball most commonly occur in the foot and lower leg (tibia). Once
diagnosed, a period of immobilization and non-weight bearing is recommended. Return
to play is permitted once the fracture has completely healed and the athlete is pain free.

Bascketball for people with disabilities

Wheelchair basketball is basketball played by people with varying physical

disabilities that disqualify them from playing an able-bodied sport. These include spina-
bifida, birth defects, cerebral palsy, paralysis due to accident, amputations (of the legs),
and many other disabilities. The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF)
is the governing body for this sport. It is recognized by the International Paralympic
Committee (IPC) as the sole competent authority in wheelchair basketball worldwide.
FIBA has recognized IWBF under Article 53 of its General Statutes.

Wheelchair basketball is included in the Paralympic Games. The Wheelchair

Basketball World Championship is played two years after every Paralympic Games.
Major competition in wheelchair basketball comes from Canada, Australia, the United
States, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Japan.

How can be this activity improved

Basketball wheelchairs are designed for enhanced stability. The center of gravity
is where the chair and the athlete's mass are equally distributed in all directions. Points
at which the wheelchair can tip over sideways are the fulcrum. A wheelchair with a
higher seat is easier to tip. Basketball chairs have lower seats and wheels that are
angled outward so that the center of gravity has to move a greater distance before it
passes over the fulcrum and tips the chair. Guards use wheelchairs different from those
of centers and forwards. Forwards and centers are typically under the net, their chairs
have higher seats and therefore less mobility, but the height increases the player's
reach for shots at the hoop and for rebounds. Guards have lower seats and therefore
greater stability for ball handling and getting down the court as quickly as possible.

Wheelchair basketball retains most major rules and scoring of basketball, and
maintains a 10-foot basketball hoop and standard basketball court. The exceptions are
rules which have been modified with consideration for the wheelchair. For example,
"travelling" in wheelchair basketball occurs when the athlete touches their wheels more
than twice after receiving or dribbling the ball. The individual must pass, bounce or
shoot the ball before touching the wheels again.
