Goddess in samayapuram is well known by the catche phrase "Samayapuram Mariamman

Samayithil Kaapaal" , which means Mother Mari of Samayapuram will protect her child
in
time. Mother Mari here is known to be an incarnation of Goddess Kali who evades the
evils and Parvathi who nurtures her children with great care. Goddess here is also
termed as MahaaMaaya the great illusion who is riding this universe. Power of the
Goddess is so great that a clay idol in the deep jungles turned into a
Punyakshethra
with lots of people flocking to her feet for gaining her mercy.It is the second
richest temple in Tamilnadu. Even there are many stories viewed around the origin
of
Amman the most famous among them is as follows :

Thousands of years ago there occurred a severe famine that claimed lives of many
people in the souther region. Various skin ailments like small pox chcken pox etcc
became
viral in the region. Helpless people worshipped Mother Mari for Rain and to evade
the famine. Goddess Adi Parashakthi then came in the form of a nomadic lady and
reached
current Thirucharipalli region. She is most austeric in nature like a sage. She
started wandering across the region and cured ailments of many people. There by she
became
most divine to people around. When people posed about famine then Mother undertook
fast for 28 days and blessed the people with ample amount of rains. She cured many
skin diseases waving neem twigs on the affected persons. As soon as peope became
Happy Goddess disappeared. People searched and searched finally came across a
forest
where they heard the crying of a baby. The voice directed them to a Termite mound
where snakes usually reside. Then Aaakashavani spoke that Goddess Mari who saved
people from all kinds of bad ailments resides in this Anthill. Then onwards people
started worshiping that Mound as AadhiMariAmman.

Later when it became difficult to cross the deep jungles people installed idol of
MariAmman in Ranganathaswamy temple and started worshiping her. When main priest of
Ranagnathaswamy temple effected with serious health ailments he ordered the idol to
be moves out of the temple corridor as she is appeased with bloodshed she should be
kept away from normal living areas. Then people moved the idol to forest she became
favourite Goddess of people who passes by the forest. They believed that she
protects
them from anykind of ailments. During Vijayanagara Kingdom the king constructed
present form of temple . Then onwards the temple was more glorified by her power.
Her power became widespread across the region and became tutelary deity for many
families.

Along the length of the year there occurs many celebrations like
Navarathri,Chithrai festival,Poosam etc.. During Chaithra month Goddess Mariamman
undergoes fast for 28
days during which no solid food will eb given to amman and only liquids like
Buttermilk,Fruit juices etc are offerred. A festival comemorating the union of
AadhiMari
and SamayapuraMari will be held as union of Mother and her child. Saamiattam a well
known divine speech by a woman possessed by Mariamman will be held in which she
predicts upcoming disasters and warns people of them.
