Reinforcement Steel types:
TERMS RELATING TO STEEL DETAILING

Main reinforcement:

 They take the entire load and generally located at points of maximum
bending moment to resist the moment.

Anchor/hanger Rebars:

 These bars do not take any load, instead helps for placing and fixing
the stirrups (Shear reinforcement) in position.
 Generally these are re-bars present in compressive zone.

Transverse reinforcement:
 Transverse reinforcements are very important.
 They not only take care of structural requirements but also help main
reinforcements to remain in desired position.
 They play a very significant role while abrupt changes or reversal of
stresses like earthquake etc. They should be closely spaced as per the
drawing and properly tied to the main/longitudinal reinforcement.

Lap length:

 Lap length is the length of overlap of bars tied to extend the

reinforcement length.
 Lap length about 50 times the diameter of the bar is considered safe.
 Laps of neighboring bar lengths should be staggered and should not be
provided at one level/line.
 At one cross section, a maximum of 50% bars should be lapped. In
case, required lap length is not available at junction because of space
and other constraints, bars can be joined with couplers or welded (with
correct choice of method of welding).

Anchorage length:

 This is the additional length of steel of one structure required to be

inserted in other at the junction.

 For example, main bars of beam in column at beam column junction,

column bars in footing etc.

 The length requirement is similar to the lap length or as per the design

instructions.

Bent up bars/Cranked bars:

 It is actually economization of material, normally, for fixed ended

beams positive (sagging) moments are present at the mid span and

negative (hogging) moments at the supports.

 So bottom steel is required at the mid span and top steel resists negative

moments at the supports.

 A bent-up is provided to take the steel on the top at supports, as bottom

steel is not normally required at the supports

 The additional length (la) that is introduced in the simple, straight end-

to-end length of a reinforcement bar due to being bent up at say 30º to

60º, but it is generally 45º) = l1 – l2 = la.

Where

Giving different values to θ (Theta), we get different values as shown in the table
below.

Hook length:
 Length of one hook = (4d) + [(4d+ d )] =9d
where, (4d+ d ) refers to the curved portion.
BEND LENGTH:

 Bend length is usually provided in columns at ends to tie the column re-
bars to the footing re-bars.

Bend length = 16 D [D=diameter of bar in mm]

Procedure for carrying out Bar bending Schedule:

1. Find and list out all the shapes and types of bars like bottom bar, top bar,
cranked /bent up bar, curtailed bar, extra bars, etc.,
2. Calculate or count the no of bars of each type.
3. List down the diameter in the bar bending schedule format
4. Calculate the cutting length of rebar.
Cutting length = Length of member - Cover on both sides + development
length.
5. Calculate the weight per meter of each rebar.
6. Calculate the weight of rebar
Weight of rebar = No of bars x cutting length x weight per meter
7. Add the weight of all rebars to get total steel quantity.
Instance of RCC Beam Reinforcement Calculation:
Assume a beam of clear length of 4m, 300mm wide by 450mm depth. It consists
of 2-12 diameter bars at top, and 2-16 diameter and 1 – 12 diameter bent up bar at
the bottom. Diameter of stirrup is 8mm and spaced at 180mm center to center.
Clear cover to reinforcement provided is 40mm.

Now we will calculate the length of reinforcement on the basis of shapes of

reinforcement mandatory for reinforced concrete beam in above example.
We will start with bottom reinforcement, Bottom bar B1.
Bar shape of B1 is as shown in the last figure.
Length of B1 = clear distance between walls + 2 x width of walls/bearings – 2 x
bar cover + 2 x bend length
Bend length = 6 x 16 = 96 consider as 100mm Bend length is calculated as 6 x
diameter of bar for reinforcement conforming to IS: 1786-1961
(Or)
Development length = Depth – 2xcover
Length of B1 = 4000 + 2 x 230 – 2 x 40 + 2 x100 = 4580mm
Length of bar B2 is calculated on the basis of the shape of this bar. This bar
bends up closer to the support as shown below:

Length of bar bent-up bar B2 : A + B + C = 4000 + 2 x 230 – 2 x 40 + (1.414xH – H)

H = 450 – 2 x 40 – 2 x 12 – 2 x 12/2 = 334mm
B2 = 4000 + 2 x 230 – 2 x 40 + (1.414×334 – 334) = 4518.3 = 4520mm
Length of Anchor or top Bar T1 = 4000 + 2 x 230 -2 x 40 = 4380mm
Length of Stirrups S1:

Stirrups are spaced at 180mm center to center. Stirrups are provided between
walls or support for a beam.
No. of stirrups required for given beam = [Length of member – 2x cover-)/ spacing] +1
Length a = 450 – 2 x40 = 370mm
Length b = 300 – 2 x 40 = 220mm
Therefore length of 1 stirrup S1 = 2 x (220 + 370 + 9xd) = 1324 mm
