Dear Friends of St. John Cantius:

Our Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols has been an annual event for fif-
teen years now. Since 2004 many people look forward to this service each
year. If this is your first visit to St. John Cantius, I hope it’s the first of
many. If you are a “regular,” I am delighted you are back with us.
In this Advent season, may we always remember the ultimate gift God be-
stowed upon us. Christ’s birth not only frees us from the slavery of this
world, but also offers us the invitation to be children of the living God and
dwellers in the eternal Kingdom.
Many individuals have assisted in the preparations for Lessons and Carols,
and it would be impossible to thank each and every one, so I will indicate
just a few. I thank all of the members of our choirs and choir directors for
their dedication and diligent work in preparing the sacred music. I thank
the lay leaders of our parish who were invited to be readers of the Lessons.
And I thank all our generous volunteers who spent time on marketing,
publicity, ushering, parking, sending invitations, editing, research, and many
other tasks. May God bless all who in any way promoted this special event.
As with any undertaking of this magnitude, there are many costs. I wish to
thank the businesses and individuals that have supported this and other
programs at St. John Cantius Parish. Also, many thanks go to the Patrons
of Sacred Music who have supported us and without whose financial assis-
tance tonight’s program would not be possible.
Finally, I offer a heartfelt thanks to all of you who attend Lessons and Car-
ols. Your attendance gives great encouragement to us and shows us your
support of what we do here at St. John Cantius Church. So as we approach
the great feast of Christmas, let us glimpse the unfolding of the mystery of
Christ’s birth through Sacred Scripture and Sacred Song. May the joy and
peace of our Infant Lord be yours this Advent and Christmas seasons!

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Scott E. Thelander, SJC

Administrator ad interim

R un, shepherds, run, where Bethlem blest appears,
We bring the best of news, be not dismayed,
A Saviour there is born, more old than years,
Amidst heaven’s rolling heights this earth who stayed.
In a poor cottage inned, a virgin maid
A weakling did him bear, who all upbears;
There is he, poorly swaddled, in manger laid,
To whom too narrow swaddlings are our spheres:
Run, shepherds run, and solemnize his birth,
This is that night – no, day, grown great with bliss,
In which the power of Satan broken is;
In heaven be glory, peace unto the earth!
Thus singing, through the air the angels swam,
And cope of stars re-echoed the same.

WELCOME
We welcome you this evening for our annual Festival of Nine Lessons
and Carols. This year’s event is memorable, as we are in the midst of a
year long celebration of the 125th anniversary of our parish (1893-2018).
In our program, we are highlighting the composer Healey Willan (1880-
1968), upon the 50th anniversary of his death. We will also enjoy new
musical works by composers Nicholas White and Stephanie Martin, writ-
ten in homage to Healey Willan, which are premiered this evening.
Among our special guests, we give special welcome to The Honorable
Giuseppe Finocchiaro, Consul General of The Consulate General of Ita-
ly in Chicago; The Honorable Piotr Semeniuk, Vice Consul of The Con-
sulate General of the Republic of Poland in Chicago; and representatives
from the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Chicago, who are in attendance
this evening. We also welcome members of the U.S. Armed Forces, and
our Military Veterans and their families, who are special guests tonight.
Donations to the Patrons of Sacred Music for Lessons & Carols go to
support the work of the Patrons of Sacred Music (AMDG Foundation)
here at St. John Cantius Church. For those unable to make a financial
contribution, we welcome you and ask the help and support of your
prayers. We thank you for your generosity.
St. Augustine, who, in his Sermon on Psalm 72 says, “He who sings well
prays twice,” experienced the importance of music in the spiritual life.
He remarks: “How I wept deeply moved by your hymns, songs and the
voices that echoed through your Church! What emotion I experienced
in them! Those sounds flowed into my ears, distilling the truth in my
heart. A feeling of devotion surged within me, and tears streamed down
my face – tears that did me good.” (Conf. 9, 6, 14: PL 32, 769-770). We
hope you will find this a deeply spiritual way of preparing for Christ’s
Advent as you hear the story of the coming of the Messiah, and as you
heartily join in singing.

Processional Hymn: ONCE IN ROYAL DAVID’S CITY

Solo Treble Once in royal David’s city

Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for His bed;
Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little child.

St. Cecilia He came down to earth from heaven,

Choir Who is God and Lord of all,
And His shelter was a stable,
And His cradle was a stall;
With the poor, and mean, and lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.
The organ will play an interlude after verse 2.
13
All And through all His wondrous childhood
He would honor and obey,
Love and watch the lowly maiden,
In whose gentle arms He lay:
Christian children all must be
Mild, obedient, good as He.
All For He is our childhood’s pattern,
Day by day like us He grew,
He was little, weak, and helpless,
Tears and smiles like us He knew;
And He feeleth for our sadness,
And He shareth in our gladness.

All And our eyes at last shall see Him,

Through His own redeeming love,
For that child so dear and gentle
Is our Lord in heaven above;
And He leads His children on
To the place where He is gone.
All Not in that poor lowly stable,
With the oxen standing by,
We shall see Him; but in heaven,
Set at God’s right hand on high;
When like stars His children crowned
All in white shall wait around.

BIDDING PRAYER – All Remain Standing

Priest: In the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.

Priest: BELOVED IN CHRIST, be it this Advent season our care and

delight to prepare ourselves to hear again the message of the angels: in
heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is

14
come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger. Let us read and mark in
Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first
days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought us by
this Holy Child; and let us make this Church glad with our carols of
praise: But first let us pray for the needs of His whole world; for peace
and goodwill over all the earth; for unity and brotherhood within the
Church He came to build, and especially in Archdiocese of Chicago.
And because this of all things would rejoice His heart, let us at this time
remember in His name the poor and the helpless, the cold, the hungry
and the oppressed; the sick in body and in mind and them that mourn;
the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; all who
know not the Lord Jesus, or who love Him not, or who by sin have
grieved His heart of love. Lastly let us remember before God all those
who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that
multitude which no man can number, whose hope was in the Word
made flesh, and with whom, in this Lord Jesus, we for evermore are
one. These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne of
heaven, in the words which Christ himself hath taught us:

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy
kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give
us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we
forgive those that trespass against us; And lead us not into temp-
tation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Priest: May Almighty God bless us with His grace: Christ give us the
joys of everlasting life: and unto the fellowship of the citizens above
may the King of Angels bring us all.
All: Amen.

§ The congregation sits.

FIRST LESSON: GENESIS 3.

God tells sinful Adam that he has lost the life of Paradise
and that his seed will bruise the serpent’s head.
Reader: Master Max Swift
They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the
cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the pres-
ence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God

15
called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard
the sound of thee in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and
I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eat-
en of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The
woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and
I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have
done?” The woman said, “The serpent beguiled me, and I ate.” The Lord
God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you
above all cattle, and above all wild animals; upon your belly you shall go,
and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between
you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise
your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” To the woman he said, “I will
greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth chil-
dren, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”
And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your
wife, and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not
eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all
the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth to you; and you
shall eat the plants of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and
to dust you shall return.”

CAROL: MANGER CAROL

Here betwixt ass and oxen mild, sleep, sleep, sleep my little child.
Angels from on high hover in the sky
keeping watch above th’incarnate God of love.
Here in the crib, secure from harms, sleep, sleep, in your mother’s arms.
Angels from on high hover in the sky
keeping watch above th’incarnate God of love.
Here betwixt rose and lily white, sleep, sleep, sleep my son tonight.
Angels from on high hover in the sky
keeping watch above th’incarnate God of love.
On this fair night of holy joy, sleep, sleep, sleep my little boy.
Angels from on high hover in the sky
keeping watch above th’incarnate God of love.

Arranged: LEO SOWERBY (1895-1968)
Translation: CHARLES WINFRED DOUGLAS (1867-1944)

CAROL: HERE ARE WE IN BETHLEHEM

Here are we in Bethlehem; there the stable door!

Let us go and enter in, Mary’s Babe adore.
See the Kings who come from afar, bearing myrrh and gold,
Frankincense to offer Him, treasure manifold.
Take we gifts as well as these, at His feet to lay:
Clothes to shield Him from the cold, toys that He may play.
For a baby still is He, Mary still is poor.
Here are we in Bethlehem, there the stable door. Mary still is poor.

Words: FRANCIS JOHN MOORE (1885-1968)

Music: HEALEY WILLAN (1880-1968)
SECOND LESSON: GENESIS 22.
God promises to Abraham that in his seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.
Reader: Scott Anderson

The angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven, and
said, “By myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this,
and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will indeed bless you, and
I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven and as the sand
which is on the seashore. And your descendants shall possess the gate of
their enemies, and by your descendants shall all the nations of the earth
bless themselves, because you have obeyed my voice.”

CAROL: GABRIEL’S MESSAGE

The Angel Gabriel from heaven came,
his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame;
‘All hail,’ said he, ‘thou lowly maiden Mary,
most highly favoured Lady.’ Gloria!

‘For know a blessèd Mother thou shalt be,

all generations laud and honour thee,
thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold;
most highly favoured Lady.’ Gloria!

Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head,

‘To me be as it pleaseth God,’ she said,

17
‘My soul shall laud and magnify His holy name’:
most highly favoured Lady. Gloria!

Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ was born

in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn,
and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say
‘Most highly favoured Lady.’ Gloria!

Words: SABINE BARING-GOULD (1834-1924)

Music: TRADITIONAL BASQUE CAROL
Arranged: NICHOLAS WHITE (b. 1967)

§ The congregation stands.

HYMN: O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary and, gathered all above,

While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wond’ring love.
O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth.

How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given;

So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His Heaven.
No ear may hear His coming, but in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him still, the dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray!

Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels, the great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

Words: PHILLIPS BROOKS (1835-1893)

Music: LEWIS HENRY REDNER (1831-1908)

§ The congregation sits.

18
THIRD LESSON: ISAIAS 9.
The prophet foretells the coming of the Savior.

Reader: Tomas Mackevicius

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who
dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. For to us a child
is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder,
and his name will be called “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlast-
ing Father, Prince of Peace.” Of the increase of his government and of
peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David, and over his king-
dom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and for evermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will
do this.

CAROL: ANGELS FROM THE REALMS OF GLORY

Angels from the realms of glory, wing your flight o’er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation’s story now proclaim Messiah’s birth.
Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.

Shepherds, in the field abiding, watching o’er your flocks by night,

God with us is now residing; yonder shines the infant light:
Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King

Sages, leave your contemplations, brighter visions beam afar;

Seek the great Desire of nations; ye have seen His natal star.
Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.

Saints, before the altar bending, watching long in hope and fear;
Suddenly the Lord, descending, in His temple shall appear.
Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.

All creation, join in praising God the Father, Spirit, Son,

Evermore your voices raising to th’eternal Three in One.
Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.

Words: JAMES MONTGOMERY (1771-1854 )

Music: LES ANGES DANS NOS CAMPAGNES, 18th C.
Arranged: NICHOLAS WHITE (b. 1967)

19
FOURTH LESSON: ISAIAS 11.
The peace that Christ will bring is foreshown.
Reader: Aaron Glen
There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall
grow out of his roots. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the
spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the
spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the
fear of the Lord. With righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide
with equity for the meek of the earth; The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion and
the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear
shall feed; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw
like the ox. The sucking child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the
weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. They shall not hurt or
destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the
knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

CAROL: THE SUSSEX CAROL

On Christmas night all Christians sing, to hear the news the angels bring:
News of great joy news of great mirth, news of our merciful King’s birth.
When from our sin he set us free, all for to gain our liberty?

When sin departs before his grace, then life and health come in its place,
Angels and men with joy may sing all for to see the new born King.
All out of darkness we have light, which made the angels sing this night.
‘Glory to God and peace to men, now and forever more. Amen.’

Words: LUKE WADDINGE (1628- ca. 1691)

Arranged: NICHOLAS WHITE (b. 1967)
CAROL: AN EARTHLY TREE

Hodie Christus natus est: Today Christ is born:

Hodie Salvator apparuit: Today the Savior appeared:
Hodie in terra canunt Angeli, Today on Earth the Angels sing,
laetantur Archangeli Archangels rejoice:
Hodie exsultant justi, dicentes: Today the righteous rejoice, saying:
Gloria in excelsis Deo. Glory to God in the highest.
Alleluia. Alleluia.
20
An earthly tree a heavenly fruit it bear,
A case of clay contained a crown immortal
A crown of crowns, a King whose cost and care
Redeemed poor man, whose race before was thrall
To death, to doom, to pains of everlasting,
By His sweet death, scorns, stripes, and often fasting.

A star above the stars, a sun of light,

Whose blessed beams this wretched earth bespread
With hope of heaven and of God's Son the sight,
Which in our flesh and sinful soul lay dead.
O faith, O hope, O joys renowned for ever,
O lively life that deathless shall persever.

Then let us sing the lullabys of sleep

To this sweet babe, born to awake us all
From drowsy sin that made old Adam weep,
And by his fault gave to mankind the fall.
For lo! this day, the birth day, day of days,
Summons our songs to give Him laud and praise.

Words: PLAINCHANT ANTIPHON FOR CHRISTMAS DAY

ANON, SONGS OF SUNDRIE NATURES (1589)
Music: STEPHANIE MARTIN (b. 1962)

FIFTH LESSON: LUKE 1

The angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Reader: David Contreras
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee
named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph,
of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to
her and said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly
troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting
this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you
have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb
and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will
be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the
throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for
ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.” And Mary said to the angel,
21
“How can this be, since I have no husband?” And the angel said to her,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son
of God. And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also
conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
For with God nothing will be impossible.” And Mary said, “Behold, I am
the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the
angel departed from her.

§ The congregation stands.

HYMN: AWAY IN A MANGER

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head;
The stars in the sky looked down where he lay;
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.
I love Thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,
And stay by my cradle ’til morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care;
And fit us for heaven to live with Thee there.
Music: MUELLER, JAMES RAMSEY MURRAY (1841-1905)
Text: VS. 1-2, ANON, VS. 3, JOHN T. MCFARLAND (1851-1913)

§ The congregation sits.

CAROL: THE PROPHECY

O Wisdom, which camest out of the mouth of the Most High;

O Adonai, and Leader of the house of Israel;
O Root of Jesse;
O Key of David and Sceptre of the house of Israel;
O Day-spring, Brightness of Light Everlasting;
O King of Nations, and their Desire;

22
O Emmanuel, our King and Lawgiver;
The Desire of all nations, and their Salvation: come and save us.

O Virgin of virgins, how shall this be?

Daughters of Jerusalem, why marvel ye at me?
The thing which ye behold is a divine mystery.

Text: BASED ON THE “GREAT O ANTIPHONS” OF ADVENT

Translation: JOHN ATHELSTAN RILEY (1858-1945)
Music: HEALEY WILLAN (1880-1968)

SIXTH LESSON: LUKE 2

St. Luke tells of the birth of Jesus.
Reader: William Melichar
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world
should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Cyrinus was gover-
nor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. And Joseph
also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city
of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and line-
age of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. And she
gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and
laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

CAROL: THE ANNUNCIATION

Hail, O Star that pointest towards the port of heaven.

Thou to whom a maiden God for Son was gives
When the salutation Gabriel had spoken.

Peace was shed upon us, Eden’s bonds were broken.

Jesus’ tender Mother, make thy supplication
Unto Him who chose thee at His Incarnation.

So, as now we journey. Aid our weak endeavour.

Till we gaze on Jesus. And rejoice forever.

My soul doth magnify the Lord:

And my soul hath rejoiced in God my Saviour;
23
For he bath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden;
For behold from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed.

Text: VERSES FROM “AVE MARIS STELLA” AND MAGNIFICAT”

Translation: JOHN ATHELSTAN RILEY (1858-1945);
JOHN MASON NEALE (1818-1866)
Music: HEALEY WILLAN (1880-1968)

CAROL: THE MANGER

Therefore, when at length the fullness

Of the appointed time was come,
He was sent, the world’s Creator,
From the Father’s heavenly home,
And was found in human fashion,
Offspring of the Virgin’s womb.

Lo, He lies, an Infant weeping

Where the narrow manger ends.
While the Mother-maid, His members
Wraps in mean and lowly bands.
And the swaddling clothes is winding
Round His helpless Feet and Hands.

Text: VERSE FROM “PANGE LINGUA”BY FORTUNATUS (7th C.)

Translation: JOHN MASON NEALE (1818-1866)
Music: HEALEY WILLAN (1880-1968)

SEVENTH LESSON: LUKE 2.

The shepherds go to the manger.
Reader: Rob Pluta
And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch
over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and
the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear.
And the angel said to them, “Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good
news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born
this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this
will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths
and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multi-

24
tude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the
highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!” When the
angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another,
“Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which
the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste, and found Mary
and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

§ The congregation stands.

HYMN: O CHRISTMAS TREE

O Christmas tree! O Christmas tree! How faithful are thy branches.
O Christmas tree! O Christmas tree! How faithful are thy branches.
Not only green when summer’s here, but also when ‘tis cold and drear.
O Christmas tree! O Christmas tree! How faithful are thy branches.

O Christmas tree! O Christmas tree! How richly God has decked thee.
O Christmas tree! O Christmas tree! How richly God has decked thee.
Thou bid’st us true and faithful be, and trust in God unchangingly.
O Christmas tree! O Christmas tree! How richly God has decked thee.

CAROL: THE SHEPHERDS

Whom saw ye, Shepherds? Say ye and tell us the tidings of the birth of Christ.
He that bath appeared upon earth. We have seen Him that is born,

Shepherds in the field abiding. Watching o’er your flocks by night;

God with man is now residing. Yonder shines the Infant Light;
Come and worship, Worship Christ, the new-born King.

EIGHTH LESSON: MATTHEW 2.
The wise men are led by the star to Jesus.
Reader: Will Anderson
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the
king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is
he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East,
and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was
troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and
scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet:
‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among
the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my peo-
ple Israel.’” Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained
from them what time the star appeared; and he sent them to Bethlehem, say-
ing, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him
bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” When they had heard
the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East
went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was.
When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going
into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down
and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts:
gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return
to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

CAROL: THE MAGI

From the East there came sages to Bethlehem

And seeing the star they rejoiced with great rejoicing.
Yon star gleameth like a fiery beacon!
‘Tis the sign of a mighty King.
Let us fare forth and seek Him,
And we will offer gold as to a mighty monarch,
Incense as to the true God
And myrrh to fore-shew His burial.
The star went leading on from East to West,
The wise men followed,
Till they saw it rest in Bethlehem.
Their frankincense, and myrrh, and gold they bring,

26
To hail the God, the Mortal, and the King In Bethlehem.
With threefold gifts, the Threefold God three praise,
Who thus vouchsafed the Son of Man to raise In Bethlehem.

HYMN: GOOD CHRISTIAN MEN REJOICE
Good Christian men, rejoice with heart, and soul, and voice;
Give ye heed to what we say: Jesus Christ was born to-day:
Ox and ass before Him bow, and He is in the manger now.
Christ is born today! Christ is born today.
Good Christian men, rejoice, with heart, and soul, and voice;
Now ye hear of endless bliss: Jesus Christ was born for this!
He hath ope’d the heav’nly door, and man is blessed evermore.
Christ was born for this! Christ was born for this!
Good Christian men, rejoice with heart, and soul, and voice;
Now ye need not fear the grave: Jesus Christ was born to save!
Calls you one, and calls you all, to gain His everlasting hall:
Christ was born to save! Christ was born to save!

NINTH LESSON: JOHN 1

St. John unfolds the great mystery of the Incarnation.
Reader: Rev. Scott E. Thelander, S.J.C.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through
him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was
life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and
27
the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose
name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all
might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to
the light. The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the
world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the
world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people re-
ceived him not. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he
gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of
the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word be-
came flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his
glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.

CAROL: THE FULFILMENT

This is He Whom seers in old time chanted of with one accord;
Whom the voices of the prophets promised in their faithful word;
Now He shines, the long-expected; let creation praise its Lord.
O ye heights of Heav’n, adore Him; angel-hosts, His praises sing;
All dominions, bow before Him, and extol our God and King.
Let no tongue on earth be silent. Every voice in concert ring,
Evermore and evermore.
