As it turns out, ABC News reports that quite a few guys also have stuffed animals, and they're
taking them on the road. Travelodge, the British hotel chain, did a survey of 6,000 Britons and
found that 25 percent of males take cuddly critters with them on business trips.

Upon learning this, one of the first questions that sprang to mind is, why did Travelodge even
do this type of survey? As the article notes, in the past 12 months, the company has "reunited
more than 75,000 bears with the owners," so they decided to look into this stuffed phenomenon
further. Fascinating.

As to why men bring them along, it's because the travel mascots (My friend calls his stuffed
armadillo "Armand.") both remind them of home and help "fill a cuddle-void left by distant
partners." Aside from road trips, 10 percent of single men surveyed "hide their teddy bear when
their girlfriend stays over" and nearly 15 percent of married men "hide their teddy bear in the
wardrobe or under the bed when any family and friends come to visit."

Part of me can't help wondering if this is a particularly British phenomenon. At the same time, I
feel like I've just discovered some sort of mysterious male subculture, or maybe it's just men
being more comfortable embracing their feminine sides — you know, so long as others don't
know about it.

Zurich planning drive-in sex-boxes

Police chiefs in Switzerland are planning to build a series of drive-in sex-boxes to enable
prostitutes to conduct their business with punters without disturbing the neighbourhood.
The idea - imported from German cities like Essen and Cologne - is being proposed by Zurich
police chief Daniel Leupi as a way to let prostitutes work in a more discrete way.

The idea comes after thousands of complaints by householders whose homes overlook the
thriving red light district in Zurich.

'They get up to all sorts in broad daylight - and we're sick to death of looking at it,' said one.

Police spokesman Reto Casanova (his actual name) said: 'We can't get rid of prostitution, so
have to learn how to control it.'

Earlier today, a gunman entered Discovery Channel's headquarters with a gun or some
explosives (reports are still coming in), took some employees hostage, and demanded better
science programming.

His demands, which are posted here, include the demand that Discovery Channel start airing
shows that offer solutions to the planet's problems, and that "All programs promoting War and the
technology behind those must cease."

The document also demands that Discovery stop promoting childbirth in its shows, and that it
must "Develop shows that mention the Malthusian sciences about how food production leads to
the overpopulation of the Human race. Talk about Evolution. Talk about Malthus and Darwin until
it sinks into the stupid people's brains until they get it!!" The gunman also demands shows that
offer solutions to problems with immigration, pollution, and the US economy.

So far, it appears that nobody has been hurt.

UPDATE: Police say the gunman is James Jay Lee, who has protested before at the Discovery
Channel building. It appears that he has one hostage, still unhurt.

UPDATE: Police have shot the gunman, and his three hostages are now safe.

For all the benefits of touchscreen keyboards, there are many who maintain a steadfast
allegiance to the gods of tactile feedback. So how does this Mini Key case with sliding QWERTY
for the iPhone 4 strike you? Unfortunately, the keys were a bit hard to press on the backlit
prototype keypad handled by Engadget Spanish, and it links to the iPhone via Bluetooth, not the
iPhone's dock connector (there's a cutout at the bottom for a cable to pass through). And no, all
that added bulk still doesn't include an extended life battery pack. Perhaps some of this will
change before it goes on sale before the end of the year for $60 / €60, we doubt it though.
