Important Questions
Chapter 15 - Light

A) Very Short Answer Questions: ( 1 x 5 ) = 5 Marks

1. Light travels in a _________________ line.
2. Direction of light can be changed by ___________________.
3. Concave mirror is an example of a ______________mirror.
4. A _______________ can be used to split light into 7 colours.
5. __________________ Image can be obtained on a screen.
Ans:
1- straight,
2-reflection,
3-spherical,
4 – prism,
5-Real

B) Short Answer Questions: ( 3 x 5 ) = 15 Marks

1. Differentiate between a real image and a virtual image.

Ans:
Real Image Virtual Image
Can be obtained on a screen Cannot be obtained on a screen
Inverted Erect
Light rays converge at a real point Light rays appear to converge at a
on the screen point
Formed by concave mirror, convex Formed by plane mirror, concave
lens lens, etc.

2. Explain Newton disc.

Ans: Newton disc was invented by Isaac Newton. It is a spherical disc containing 7
segments. Each segment corresponds to one colour in the rainbow. Thus the seven colours
in the Newton disc segments are violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. When
the disc is rotated the colours start to fade to form a single white colour. Newton, thus
demonstrated that white light is a combination of 7 different colours found in the rainbow.

Important Questions
Chapter 15 - Light

3. Explain how concave mirror can be used to burn a piece of paper.

Ans: A concave mirror can be used to focus the image of sun on a paper. A concave mirror
is taken and held facing the sun. A paper is held near and light rays from the sun can be
focussed on the paper by adjusting the distance of the paper until a sharp bright spot is
obtained on the paper. That bright spot is the real image of the sun on the paper. The paper
and mirror are held in that position steadily for some time. It can be seen that the paper starts
to burn at the spot of the real image. This is because the light rays from the sun were
concentrated on a single point for long enough to cause the paper to heat up and burn.

4. Differentiate between concave and convex lens.

Ans:
Convex lens Concave lens
Curved outward Curved inwards
Converging lens Diverging lens
Thicker at the centre and thinner Thinner at the centre and thicker
towards the edges towards the edges
Forms a real inverted image Forms a virtual erect and magnified
image
Image appears closer and larger Image appears farther and smaller

5. Demonstrate that light travels in a straight line.

Ans: A lighted candle is taken. It is first visualised through a straight pipe and then with a
bent pipe. It can be observed that the candle was seen only while using a straight pipe. While
using the bent pipe the candle was not seen. This shows that the light from the candle travels
in a straight line until it reaches the eyes. Therefore, in general light travels in a straight line.

C) Long Answer Questions: ( 5 x 2 ) = 10 Marks

1. Explain the formation of a rainbow.

Ans: Rainbow is a large multi-coloured arc that occasionally appears in the sky after the
rains. It is usually seen when the sun is low in the sky. It can be seen only when our back is
facing the sun. Sometimes soon after the rain sun starts to shine. Some water droplets in the
sky act as a prism and split the light from the sun into seven different colours. This forms
the rainbow. The rainbow appears semi-circular.

2. List few uses of spherical mirrors.

Ans: Spherical mirrors have many applications. Concave mirrors are used to enlarge objects.
This type of mirror is used by doctors to enlarge ears, eyes, nose and throat. They are also
used by dentists to enlarge the image of teeth. The headlights of the vehicles are concave in

surface. Convex mirrors are used to observe a large field as they form images of objects
that are spread over a large area. Thus, they are used as side mirrors in cars as well as mirrors
placed at blind turnings on roads.
