INDUSTRY PROFILE

Pharmaceutical Industry

Pharmacy is the art of preparing and dispensing medication and the

provision of drug related information to the public. The modern Indian
pharmaceutical industry is laids its foundation in the beginning of the previous of
century in 1901, a small factory known as the “BENGAL CHEMICAL AND
PHARMACEUTICAL WORKS” was established in culcutta .India took some steps
to strengthen its drug and pharmaceuticals field, after independence. Today India is in
position to meet 70% of the countries requirements of drug and almost all the
demands for foundation.

Indian Pharmaceutical Industry

The pharmaceutical industry today is in the front rank of

India’s science based industries with wide ranging capabilities in the complex field of
drug manufacture and technology. A highly organized sector, the Indian Pharma
industry is estimated to be worth dollar 4.5 billion, growing at about 8-9% annually. It
ranks very high in the third world, in terms of technology, quality and range of

Playing a key role in promoting and sustaining development in the
vital field of medicines, Indian pharmaceutical industry boasts of quality producers
and many units approved by regulatory authorities in USA and UK.International
companies associated with this sector have stimulated, assisted and spearheaded this
dynamic development in the past 53 years and helped to put India on the
pharmaceutical map of the world.

The Indian pharmaceutical sector is highly fragmented

with more than 20,000 registered units. It has expanded drastically in the last two
decades. The leading 250 pharmaceutical company’s controls 70% of the market with
market leader holding nearly 7% of the market share. It is an extremely fragmented
market with severe price competition and government price control.

The pharmaceutical industry in India needs around 70% percentage of the

country’s demand for bulk drugs, drug intermediates, pharmaceutical formulations,
chemicals ,tablets, capsules, orals and injectibles. There are about 250 large units and
about 8000 small scale units which form the core of the pharmaceutical industry in
India[Including 5 central public sector units].These units produce the complete range
of pharmaceutical formulations, that is, medicines ready for consumption by patients
and about 350 bulk drugs,ie; chemicals having therapeutic value and used for
production of pharmaceutical formulations.

Following the de-licensing of the pharmaceutical industry, industrial licensing for

most of the drugs and pharmaceutical products has been done away with.
Manufactures are free to produce any drug dually approved by the Drug Control
Authority. Technologically strong and totally self relent, pharmaceutical industry in
India has low cost of production, low R&D costs, innovative scientific, man power,
strength of national laboratories and an increasing balance of trade. The
pharmaceutical industry, with its rich scientific talents and research capabilities,
supported by intellectual property protection regime is well set to take on the
international market.

Labour absenteeism in Sangrose Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd 39

o The relationship between top management and workers must be improved.
o Strict action must be taken for those who take more unauthorized.
o There must be rewards to those employees who are regular in attendance.
o The workers must be given proper training so that they know their work
properly & tends to be more dedicated towards the organization.
o The workers should be made aware of the fact of absenteeism & losses caused
to the company

Labour absenteeism in Sangrose Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd 40

CONCLUSION

Labor absenteeism is the current problem, which the company is facing today.
Most of the workers are absent due to personal commitments and forthcoming new
opportunities. Acceptable absences are mostly medically certified. We find that for the
most part, the firm’s sickness pay scheme works most effectively on the duration of
absence and not its incidence. The incidence of absence appears to be determined mostly
by personal characteristics especially sex and martial status .we interpret this to mean
that workers do not consider their entitlement to sick pay when commencing an absence
but that they do consider it when deciding to return to work.
