Invention – is the creation of something completely
new to the world which is not based on the
development of an existing product, process or
system.

For instance, the light bulb, the telephone, the

digital watch and the camera can all inventions;
however it could be argued that in their own right,
the mountain bike, the color television and graphite
tennis racquet are not.

Therefore, it is important to remember that although

an invention may be present, it is not implicitly
required and it is the capability to harness an
invention, develop it and incorporate it within an
innovative product that is the key commercial issue.

Innovate – to change a thing into something new; to
alter, to renew, to bring in something new for the
first time; to introduce as new.

Innovation – the action of innovating; the

introduction of novelties; the alteration of what is
established by the introduction of new elements or
form.

A change made in the nature or fashion of anything;

something newly introduced; a novel practice or
method etc.

Innovation occur successfully at two different

levels: breakthrough and incremental.

Breakthrough is mostly associated with jumps,
significant changes in a product process, usually
driven by either by technology or design, something
incorporating a new invention and sometimes not.

Incremental is the gradual improvement of a product

through a series of steps or product variants, is
most frequently characterized as small changes in, or
development of, an existing design.

Innovation’s partner is creativity.

Joseph Schumpeter(1934) distinguishes five different
types of innovation – still perfectly valid today

The only way to meet today’s competitive market is to

do things differently, which is where creativity and
innovation enter the picture.

Creativity is the ability to produce through

imaginative skill to make or bring into existence
something new, to form new associations and see
patterns and relationships between diverse
information.

Using creativity techniques can lead to more
effective problem solving skills that will facilitate
productive and satisfying designs.

Creativity may required in the following situations:

New methods – creativity tools allow for new ideas to

be generated.

Determination – creativity provides a way to look at

problems from a different angle, making it easier to
problem-solve.

Attitude – creativity is all about possibilities.

Confidence – creativity contributes to confidence by

providing alternative solutions.

Experimentation – creativity is the oil for
experimentation and analysis.

Logic – creativity generates the ideas then put them

in logical order.

There are basic principles of creativity.

1. The ability to see relationships and patterns.

2. The belief that you are creative.

3. The ability to look at a problem from a different

point of view.

4. Playfulness and humor.

5. A work environment that is flexible, open and
autonomous.
