Lord, Make Me An Instrument of Your Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O, Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.2

2 This prayer is very instructive as it teaches the ‘pray-er’ –the person who prays, that the antidote to anger is

its opposite –love; the antidote to injury is pardon, to doubt –faith, and so on. This is also the path of virtue,
i.e., to be able to overcome a bad habit or vice, one must practice its opposite –the good habit or virtue. This
prayer expresses very well the values of the Gospel and calls the ‘pray-er’ to take on the standard of Jesus of
loving even before being loved in return. By continuously dwelling on, reflecting, meditating or
contemplating the virtues and gospel values one can be transformed.
There is a version of this prayer in song composed by Ryan Cayabyab, “Il Signore”. See Youtube:
