Automist Smartscan Operation

When triggered by the heat detector, the Automist Smartscan spray head scans back and forth,
measuring the temperatures around the room using an infrared (IR) sensor. Once the peak
temperature location has been determined, the spray head will lock onto that location and activate the
high pressure pump, driving mains water through the unique nozzle unit, quickly directing a dense fog
into the location of the fire. The high momentum vertical spray orientation with a horizontal trajectory
ensures that even shielded fires are saturated with a turbulent flow of mist, suppressing the fire.

In the event of a fire, Automist Smartscan is triggered automatically by a relay contact, provided by one
or more heat alarms/detectors,1 compliant with either BS 5446-2 or BS EN 54-52. The link between
detector and relay may involve a fire panel or, more commonly, a direct wired or wireless connection
between the devices.

Automist Smartscan can be stopped manually by pressing a button on the pump’s front panel, by
means of an optional remote STOP button, or by cutting power to the independent circuit on the
consumer unit (marked with an indicator sticker).

Watermist has a different principle of fire fighting to sprinklers which suppress fires by wetting surfaces and
directly cooling the flames with large water drops, helped by gravity. Water mist uses fine droplets that
evaporate at the base of the fire to extract heat (cool) the fire and displaces oxygen from the fire zone,
resulting in fire control, suppression or extinguishment. Thus, water mist works best when placed closer to
the ground avoiding ineffective evaporation in the hot layer in the ceiling and the upward flow of hot
combustion products. Automist leverages this phenomenon by placing the spray head half way up the wall
(around light switch height): between the hot layer and furniture. This allows increased fire suppression
performance with the same amount of water. Automist is a member of the International Water Mist
Association’s (IWMA) “Archimedes Club” for the products which utilise the optimum deployment of water
mist technology.

1 In this document the terms “heat alarm” and “heat detector” are used interchangeably.

2 With suitable interface equipment, either BS 5446-2 heat alarms or BS EN 54-5 heat detectors may be used to
activate Automist. Other specific alarms/detector models are also acceptable where Plumis has tested the
products and documented their use on the Plumis Partner Site library page, provided that associated Plumis and
manufacturer guidance is followed.

Automist Smartscan Compliance and Fire Performance

Automist was independently tested by Exova Warringtonfire during the summer of 2015 and was able to
demonstrate full compliance with the fire performance criteria of the BS 8458:2015. In short, Automist is
performance compliant with BS 8458:2015 despite not being fully prescriptively compliant, which is the
essence of innovations: a smarter approach to reach the same end goal: suppression performance. UKAS
Accredited Certification Body, BSI have also issued a certificate of verification to BS 8458:2015 (VC 656504).

Automist Smartscan® Handbook v1.2.3

S MA RT SC AN

Use and Specification of Automist Smartscan

Automist Smartscan is intended to be used as an alternative to domestic/residential fire sprinklers or water
mist system as it has been shown to have equivalent fire performance. Where guidance or fire engineering
principles indicate that suppression should be deployed in a particular part or parts of a property, Automist
Smartscan should be installed to protect exactly the same areas, whether the purpose is to compensate for
means of escape problems or to extend the available time for firefighters to arrive.

As per Registered Detail EW 534:

The system may only be used where Table 2, clause 11 of BS 9991 states that a BS 8458 compliant
watermist system is applicable. The system coverage must be in accordance with that required for
any automatic water fire suppression system, as stated in Approved Document B or BS 9991:2015. It
is not acceptable to provide protection to only part of a single premise unless this is acceptable in
accordance with Approved Document B or BS 9991.

For details on the applications where water mist can be used as a means of suppression in BS 9991,
please refer to Appendix B.

Room Compatibility
A single Automist Plus pump and spray head kit can protect an area within a 6m radius from the spray head
location. The spray head should therefore be within 6m of and in the approximate line of sight of any
possible fire hazards.

6m

A single pump of the standard Automist Smartscan specification (6.0 litres/minute, 90 bar nominal) is not
inherently limited to a specific floor area as it was for Automist, however at least one spray head must be
located within 6m (line of sight) of all possible fire locations (with certain allowances for shadowed areas,
below). Spray head nozzles should be installed 1.3m ± 0.1m above finished floor level, and preferably at a
height of 1.25m. In kitchens, 1.4m should be the default in order to position the spray head clear of any
obstacles on kitchen counters. Presently Automist Smartscan supports only a single spray head per pump.

®

Automist Smartscan® Handbook v1.2.3

S MA RT SC AN

Ceiling heights are limited to 3.5m following the guidance on BS 8458:2015. Higher ceiling applications
require the involvement of a fire engineer.

If an obstruction is more than 1.2m high, it should be regarded as blocking the line of sight from any spray
head positioned within 3m. Obstructions higher than 1.5m and wider than 0.3m should be regarded as
blocking the line of sight at any distance see potentially necessitating the use of an additional spray head
and pump). Annual commissioning includes a verification that the system is not being obstructed
inadvertently. Where a radiator, hob, heated towel rail or open fire is located such that it may be visible to
the Automist Smartscan infrared sensor, the Automist Smartscan known heat source mitigation procedure
must be applied. The procedure indicates whether or not the location is acceptable based on the typical
temperature of the item in question.

IMPORTANT: Do not install Automist Smartscan outside Plumis guidelines without first discussing the
design with Plumis. Installing Automist Smartscan outside these guidelines without properly documenting
and agreeing such variations could make you responsible for deaths or injuries.

Protected and Shadowed Areas

Automist Smartscan will only operate at its maximum effectiveness when spray heads have collective
visibility of all fire loads throughout the entire room to be protected, with a minimum of obstructions by
furniture or indeed doors. Spray head locations should be carefully chosen to reflect this fact. Maximum
visibility is most frequently, but not always, achieved by placing spray heads close to doorways (on the
handle side of a door, where light switches are usually present) or close to windows (though avoiding
possible curtains).

Small “shadow” areas are permissible within certain limits. The shadowed section of a room is defined as
the collection of all points where no mist head has visibility of the point within the standard 6m operating
radius. Visibility is said to extend to a 6m radius horizontal semicircle from each mist head and end with a
radial straight-line shadow boundary wherever there is an obstruction. This nominal semicircle of visibility
should be reduced to a quarter circle (90°) or three-eighths circle (135°) where there are potential
obstructions (see below, “Preferred Positions” for spray heads).

Creating a Coverage Plan

The following process should be used to create a coverage plan:

1. Identify Preferred Positions where spray coverage is unlikely to be blocked by placement of large
furniture items against the wall.
2. Select proposed spray head positions (which may or not be Preferred) where spray head
installation is realistically achievable, in order to cover the whole room.
3. Draw nominal 6m 180° spray pattern from each spray head. For each spray head, the pattern is
reduced to a fan of only 90° or 135° if a Preferred Position has not been selected (details below).
The pattern must be truncated wherever a known obstruction blocks the spray as mentioned
above.
4. Mark on a diagram the shadowed areas of the room by the above method.
5. Mark as “not required for coverage” all doorways, sterile corridors and staircases, plus a 0.8m deep
rectangle at the entrance and exit of each of the above (details below).

Plumis Ltd Copyright © 2017. All Rights Reserved. Page 12 of 64

®

Automist Smartscan® Handbook v1.2.3

S MA RT SC AN

6. Mark as “indirect coverage” all shadowed points that are less than 0.3m from a directly covered
point. This rule allows for the way that the spray becomes turbulent around obstructions and for
the fact that activation of a heat detector requires a larger fire.
7. The Effective Shadow Area is the remaining shadowed zone of the room after “not required for
coverage” and “indirect coverage” areas have been removed.
8. Adjust until the effective shadow area is below the maximum square metreage for the project type
(see below).
9. The diagram (later submitted to Plumis) should show the Effective Coverage Area and state its area
in square metres for each compartment to be protected.

Figure 3: 6m radius semi-circular pattern showing shadow areas (hatched yellow) and openings “not required for
coverage” (hatched blue). Combined Effective Shadow Area is well below 2m2 which is within specification for a
three storey house with open plan ground floor and fire separation between ground and first floors.

“Preferred Positions” and Avoidance of Potential Obstructions

A Preferred Position is a location for a spray head where it is highly unlikely that a bookcase or other high
furniture item will meaningfully block the spray pattern, because there is no reasonable location that such a
blocking object can be placed. This does not relate to a householder deciding to disable the suppression
system; full obstruction of the spray head or the creation of de facto room partitions with bookcases are
akin to wilfully removing fire doors or removing smoke detectors and are beyond the scope of this
recommendation.

Where a spray head can be mounted in one of these Preferred Positions, unobstructed both to its left and
right, its spray pattern can be assumed to be a semicircle of radius 6m as mentioned above (truncated by
any known obstacles, these creating a geometric shadow). Table 1 documents the Preferred Positions, and
they are further explained on pages 17 to 20.

Additional information and diagrams are provided in the following sections.

the nominal spray pattern in that direction should be reduced from a 90 degree quarter circle, to a 45
degree arc pointing away from the wall: Figure 4, below, shows the result when both sides could be
obstructed.

Figure 4: With spray head not in a Preferred Position, the visible area’s full-angle must
be assumed to be only 90° due to potential obstructions either side of the spray head.
Note: this is not a complete layout – additional spray heads would be required to complete the scheme.

If the reduced spray pattern leads to a large shadow area, additional spray head(s) may need to be used in
order to complete the room coverage. Figure 5 and Figure 6 below show the logic behind this rule.

Figure 5: Installation in Preferred Position between window and wall. Use of preferred position ensures that
insertion of a bookcase after installation has low consequences - grey shaded area is approximately 0.3m2.

Figure 6: This spray head location is more than 1.5m from the wall to its left and is therefore not a Preferred
Position in this sense. If we assume a bookcase may be placed to the left of the head, a large shadow will result. A
second spray head would be required to complete the coverage.

For simplicity, if a Preferred Position prevents the introduction of obstructions within 3m to the left or to
the right, the spray pattern can be assumed to be free from such unknown potential obstructions in that
direction for the full 6m spray radius, as no obstruction is likely to subtend a large angle at this distance.
See for example Figure 8 and Figure 9. This principle applies only to unknown, potential obstructions. Known
obstructions should be treated as creating simple shadows as per page 12.

Example: At Front of Built-in Cupboard

Where a spray head is in line with the front of a built-in cupboard, access to the cupboard prevents
obstruction.

Figure 7: In line with front of built-in cupboard. The distance of 3.8m to the end of the cupboard is greater than
3m and therefore the spray can be assumed unobstructed in this direction. The proximity to a wall ensures that
there is no potential for meaningful obstruction in the other direction. Thus this is a Preferred Position.

Example: Adjacent to an Opening

A spray head placed next to an opening guarantees that unknown obstructions will not be placed
obstructing the spray pattern.

Figure 8: Preferred Position for spray head near openings. The head is assumed unobstructed between the kitchen
units and the right-hand end of the sliding doors. If distance d is greater than 3m then the spray pattern is
assumed unobstructed by potential obstructions to our right. See Figure 11 for example treatment of a kitchen

S MA RT SC AN

Figure 12: The cupboard adjacent to the spray head represents a known obstruction.
This spray head location would normally necessitate a second spray head as the resulting shadow area
would be too large.

Areas Not Required For Coverage

Doorways, staircases, and the rectangular spaces 0.8m deep adjacent to them should be excluded from the
shadow calculation, provided that the layout of the property is such that the doorway or staircase is likely to
remain in use i.e. will not be blocked by a combustible object. The reader may wish to picture a doormat
having the width of the door or staircase and 0.8m in the other dimension, at the foot and head of every
staircase and on both sides of every doorway. Combustible obstructions will not routinely be placed in
these zones as they would render a portion of the property inaccessible.

Indirect Coverage
Because Automist Smartscan is activated only by heat detectors, the fires that it must tackle are inherently
quite well-developed. Tests with obstructed views of fires have shown that a partial view of the developed
fire is sufficient for Automist Smartscan’s sensor to locate the fire correctly, and that turbulent spray flow
around such partial obstructions allows suppression to function correctly. These facts are incorporated into
the design rules by allowing all shadowed points that are less than 0.3m (line of sight) from a directly
covered point to be regarded as protected by indirect coverage. Effectively this “dilates” the geometric
coverage area by 0.3m in all directions.

Calculation of Effective Shadow Area

The Effective Shadow Area is the remaining shadowed zone of the room after the “not required for
coverage” and “indirect coverage” areas have been removed. This Effective Shadow Area shall not exceed
2.8 m2 per dwelling unit. In addition:

• For three-storey houses featuring the open plan layout essentially as recommended by Approved
Document B – Volume 1 (i.e. with fire separation between ground and first floor, escape windows
at first floor, and fire suppression in any ground floor areas open to the escape route) an Effective
Shadow Area of up to 2.0 m2 per compartment is permissible. The same flexibility applies to such
three-storey houses which also have an open plan kitchen.

• For all other projects, the Effective Shadow Area should not exceed 1.1 m2 per compartment. The
limit of 2.8 m2 per dwelling unit still applies.

• If any contiguous zone of the Effective Shadow Area is out of the line of sight of all mist heads due
to obstruction (i.e. no spray head can “see” this zone at all, not even a spray head more than 6m
away), the area of this zone must not exceed 0.28 m2. This clause is intended to prevent a fire
occurring in a deep alcove where no spray head can even aim the mist jet in the correct direction.

Worked Example
In this section an example architect’s plan is presented, for the ground floor of a three-storey house that
follows the Approved Document B recommendations.

We select proposed spray positions and mark the nominal spray patterns. Because no Preferred Position is
available with a 6m range view of all points, two heads are to be used and both could have potential
obstructions on one side. The pattern is truncated where a known obstruction blocks the spray (see
chimney breast, Figure 13 below).

Finally, the Effective Shadow Area is measured. If this room is a compartment, then the Effective Shadow
Area must be below 2m2 as this is an Approved Document B-style three storey open plan house. For other
property types the area should be reduced below 1.1m2.

Use of These Rules

Preliminary Automist Smartscan designs can be recommended by specifiers by following these
recommendations, however, Plumis accredited installers are trained to specify, install, commission and
maintain the Automist Smartscan system. Their early involvement in the project is recommended as they
are required to verify installation proposals, provide critical supporting technical information and also
commissioning certificates for project approval by Building Control or other involved third parties.

Installation requirements
• Before installing, ensure that the following have been provided at the installation site:
• Sufficient space to install the pump in accordance with these installation instructions. The pump is 365
mm (height) by 240 mm (depth) by 181 mm (width) and weighs 7.0 kg.
• The pump should be installed in one of the following locations with clearance of 100 mm at front and
rear:
• In a room or cupboard with volume of at least 0.124m3, that is separated by a fire resisting
partition from the mist-protected room(s) that it serves, or
• In a cupboard with volume of at least 0.124m3, within a room that the pump serves, with the
top of the pump less than 80cm above finished floor level.
• The pump located such that it is: a) unlikely to be affected by a fire b) protected in the event of
fire; c) unlikely to be affected by flooding.
• A 3/4” water supply (connection) with an approved isolation valve located inside the cupboard and
positioned so that the connection point will not be obstructed when the pump is installed.
• A cold water supply which can deliver 6 litres per minute flow at a minimum of 1 bar (100kPa) and a
maximum of 10 bar (1MPa) static pressure. If multiple Automist Smartscan units are to operate
simultaneously, a proportionately higher flow will be required.
• A dedicated electrical supply circuit in fire resisting cabling such as FP200. This should be on a C-type
breaker, on a RCBO or a RCD protected circuit. The RCD circuit should protect only the Automist
Smartscan system and not be incorporated with any other circuit in the property.
• Metal consumer units complying with 17th Edition IET Wiring Regulations to BS 7671 2008; Amendment
3 do not require the addition of an over box to meet BS476 Part 22 (1987) and EN1364 (1999) which
pre-dates Amendment 3 becoming effective.
• Flexible high pressure hoses should be mounted as close to the ground as possible and within the wall.
For cases where the hose is exposed, conduit sleeves must be used. Where the hose is surface
mounted more than 1.2m from the floor in a protected room, or where the hose passes above/within
the ceiling of a protected room, a suitable thermally insulating sleeve may be required. Never use old
hose sets, only use new hoses for each installation. Contact Plumis technical support for more details.
• Note: When installing flexible high pressure hose behind plasterboard walls, Plumis advises the hose is
left free and unconstrained. This is because mounting the hose in a conduit or narrow groove within
joists makes it more susceptible to perforation when subsequent building works are carried out.
• Operating ambient temperature: above 4°C.

Spray Head Placement

The Automist Smartscan Head is designed to be affixed into a rectangular hole (89+/-2mm wide x 117mm
high) that is at least 57mm deep when using the “old work” clips provided.

If you are installing Smartscan using a BackBox, the hole dimensions are as following: 94mm wide x 119mm
high and 60mm deep

IMPORTANT: The Automist Smartscan head must be located where the spray pattern will not be
obstructed and 750mm clearance is provided around the spray head. The spray head must be installed at a
height of 1300 ± 100mm from the floor.

1200 – 1400mm

Detection System
Automist Smartscan’s reliability is dependent on the detection system. The system is designed to be
triggered by a correctly installed, positioned, and CE marked, heat alarm (BS 5446-2 compliant) or by a heat
detector (EN54-5 compliant) connected to a fire panelError! Bookmark not defined.. Automist Smartscan is activated
by feeding its three-wire alarm input cable from a three-terminal relay that is triggered directly or indirectly
by the relevant alarm or detector.

• Automist Smartscan is designed to be connected to all three terminals of the relay: Common,
Normally Open and Normally Closed. Any wired or wireless fixed-point heat alarm family that
offers such a connection style may be used. A trigger point of 57 degrees (Class 1) is
recommended.
• The pump monitors the C/NO/NC connections continuously. In the standby state, the relay must
link the Common and Normally Closed wires together. In a fire state, the relay switches, instead
linking Common to Normally Open.
• Relays with only Common and Normally Open terminals may also be used but in such cases the
Automist Smartscan pump must be customised by Plumis before shipping.

Automist Smartscan® Handbook v1.2.3

S MA RT SC AN

• DO NOT trigger Automist Smartscan from a smoke alarm as this will lead to unwanted activations.
• DO NOT trigger Automist Smartscan from a manual call point.
• DO NOT connect the Automist Smartscan pump’s alarm input to any device other than a volt free
relay. In particular, connecting the three coloured cables to the alarm interconnect or to any power
supply whatsoever is likely to damage the Automist Smartscan pump beyond repair.
• In its default setting, Automist Smartscan is programmed to run continuously for 30 minutes on
activation. This is designed to prevent interruption of mist even if a heat alarm is damaged by
extended exposure to fire.
• Where multiple Automist Smartscan units are used, each must take its input from its own
dedicated relay module e.g. the relay base of a heat alarm.
• Where multiple Automist Smartscan units are used in a single space, each with its own detection,
there is no requirement to activate all relay units in that space simultaneously if detectors will
signal a fire out of the range of a spray head.
• Fire alarm panels can add Automist Smartscan by connection to a relay output provided that this
operates only when the relevant heat detector(s) activate. If requested by a fire engineer, SLAVE
MODE can be ordered at time of purchase. This sets Automist Smartscan to operate only while its
alarm input remains active.
• Plumis recommends the use of mains powered heat alarms with back-up batteries since they
significantly increase the reliability of the detection system.
• Ten-year lithium battery alarms are an acceptable alternative when installing a mains-powered
alarm and relay causes unacceptable disruption. Wired lithium battery alarms with an integral
relay are available: correctly configured, these report low battery to the Automist pump and cause
it to go into a “beeping” error state, greatly improving safety: please refer to Plumis’s
recommended alarms documentation on the Plumis Partner Site.
• Wireless ten-year lithium battery alarms are recommended only where a scheduled maintenance
programme is in place. Alarms that use standard replaceable 9V PP3 batteries are not
recommended.
• When using wireless detection, it is not recommended to use complex house coding schemes with
overlapping zones, as installer errors can easily lead to incorrect operation and are hard to track
down.
• Where the relay is not installed adjacent to the pump that it triggers, FP200 or a suitable fire alarm
cable that resists fire for at least 30 minutes must be used for the cable run between the pump
location and the relay.
• Placement of heat detectors / alarms should follow either BS5839-6:2013 section 11.2 (h) to (n) or
BS5839-1:2013 section 22.3. Notably this implies a working range of no more than 5.3m for heat
alarms and gives guidance on unusual ceiling types.
• Automist Smartscan’s use of heat alarms does not affect or reduce any requirements for the use of
smoke detection in the property. Smoke detection provides a critical independent early warning,
especially with slow-growing fires.

DO NOT install heat alarms:

• Directly over the cooker, stove or oven.

• In areas with high humidity, like bathrooms or shower rooms, or areas to close to dishwashers or
washing machines. Install heat alarms at least 3m away from these areas if possible.
• Adjacent to, or directly above, heaters, air-conditioning vents or ceiling fans.
• In an area where the temperature may fall below 4°C or rise above 37°C.
• Near fluorescent lights. Electrical noise & flickering may affect the operation of the heat alarm.
• Closer than 300mm to light fittings.

• In such a position that it is difficult or dangerous to reach for testing or maintenance or where
children can easily tamper with the alarm
• In an area where water or other liquids may enter the alarm, except in the extremely unlikely case
that the alarm and its connections are waterproof.
• On surfaces subject to significant vibration.

IMPORTANT: This version of Automist Smartscan will not function correctly if activated by smoke detection
or a manual call point. Use only fixed temperature heat detection. Use with other types of detection could
lead to death or injury.

Ensure Automist Smartscan is only connected to the main heat alarm(s) in the volume it protects. You can
check these interconnections using the product’s ALARM TEST MODE (see page 44). In this mode, the alarm
lamp will light to indicate a functioning alarm input. Ensure that Automist Smartscan has been successfully
returned to the System OK state following this test, and that the water supply remains open, and that
nozzles are unobstructed.

A) Preparing the site

Important! Connecting the system to the mains requires a competent electrician with 17th Edition
Electrical Qualifications. The Automist Smartscan circuit should be clearly labelled (a sticker is provided for
this purpose). Automist Smartscan requires an independent 230V a.c. / 50Hz electrical supply, not shared
with other unrelated devices. Components of the fire detection and alarm system may use this circuit,
which must remain powered in the event of a fire. Power to Automist Smartscan must be provided via an
unswitched fused connection unit (FCU). Automist Smartscan should be supplied using FP200 cable or
better, ideally inside conduit or protected 50mm deep within a wall, and with no RCD or RCBO protection.
RCD or RCBO protection may be required, however, by applicable electrical installation regulations, in which
case the circuit design must be such that the operation of any other RCD, RCBO or safety device does not
affect the operation of Automist Smartscan. Typically, on a split-load board, Automist Smartscan should be
connected to the non-protected side of the board. Where there are no spare ways in the existing consumer
unit, or there are no available non-RCD protected ways in the existing consumer unit, the electrician may
wish to use a Henley Block to provide new tails to a second distribution board (typically a 2- or 4-way unit).

The Automist Smartscan unit presents a part-inductive load and therefore only type “C” breakers are
suitable. Because Automist Smartscan is often used for life safety applications, installers should add a
suitable safety margin to the MCB ratings. The circuit supplying a single Automist Smartscan unit would
commonly be protected by a type ‘C10’ or ‘C16’, for example, or ‘C20’ / ‘C32’ for two Automist Smartscan
units. This should be on a C-type breaker, on an RCBO or a RCD protected circuit. The RCD circuit should
protect only the Automist Smartscan system and not be incorporated with any other circuit in the property.
If the consumer unit is located in the protected area it should be protected by an electrical cover. However,
if the consumer unit is in the protected area and has a metal enclosure complying with 17th Edition IET
Wiring Regulations to BS 7671 2008; Amendment 3, it does not require the addition of an over box to meet
BS476 Part 22 (1987) and EN1364 (1999) which pre-dates Amendment 3 becoming effective. If the electrical
installation is required to follow BS 8458, the stipulations of that standard should be adopted; in particular
it may require the use of fuses rather than MCBs as well as a “separately fused connection taken after the
meter and from the supply side of the domestic or residential fuse box”.

Power Loss Alarm

It is possible to fit a power loss alarm to the system, to alert the user if power is cut. Because the alarm is
installed to detect a loss of power, it must be installed on a separate spur of the same circuit as the
Automist system.

Many options for such an alarm are available and Plumis recommends the purchase of an inexpensive
alarm from Amazon, using the following link:

B) Installing the Automist Smartscan Head

• Route the high pressure hose and a Plumis-specification Smartscan Head Cable between the pump
and the chosen spray head location. Smartscan head Cable is ALPHA WIRE 2466L SL005 Multipair
Screened Cable or equivalent3, consisting of two twisted pairs, a conductive shield and an
insulating sleeve.
• Connect the ¼” BSP high pressure hose to the spray head assembly

IMPORTANT: Always hold

the pivot base whilst

C) Connecting the Water Supply

IMPORTANT: The flow to a fire suppression device must be ensured when using a domestic water
supply. This can be assumed when there is only a single pump connected because of its very low (6
lpm) flow requirement. However, if more than one pump is being linked to work simultaneously in a
fire, a survey needs to be carried out to ensure that there will be water supply available to both the
Automist pumps and the normal domestic supply in its worst condition. Otherwise a priority valve or
a booster pump may need to be used to provide the required flow and pressure. It is responsibility of
the installer to ensure the water supply to the Automist pumps is adequate.

The water supply should comply as follows:

• A check valve must be installed to ensure back flow protection to the mains water (supplied in kit).

• WRAS approved isolation valves (or equivalent) are required so that the Automist Smartscan
system can be shut off from the water main. All such valves should be labelled with the included
warranty void anti-tamper sticker. This enables clear identification of any tampering with the
water valve (note: spare stickers can be ordered from Plumis)

Place sticker over valve body &

handle, ensuring both are
connected by the sticker

When valve is disturbed, the

sticker will disintegrate

• Priority valves are not normally required but should be used in circumstances where the water
supply may otherwise be inadequate.

Position the pump unit as closely as possible to the mains water supply pipes.

IMPORTANT: If new pipe has been fitted, remember to flush out any contaminants before connecting to
Automist Smartscan, to avoid clogging the nozzle.

Connect the high pressure hose from the assembled head to the outlet on the pump. Plumis supplies
suitable high-pressure hoses. If using another brand of hose, follow Plumis’s guidance note, available on
the Plumis Partner Site. All high pressure hoses should have a minimum working pressure of 150 bar,
minimum internal diameter of 6.3mm and a minimum burst pressure of 600 bar. For hoses longer than 4m,

S MA RT SC AN

hoses with a robust rubberised exterior and double wire braiding are recommended such as DIN EN 853
2SN / SAE 100R2AT or DIN EN 857 2SN, rated to 400 bar working pressure and a minimum internal
diameter of 6.3mm. Hoses crimped on-site must be pressure tested to at least 150 bar before the
commissioning procedure to check for correct assembly. High pressure hoses left exposed in the protected
volume, particularly at height, could be compromised in a fire. Hoses should therefore be encased in the
wall whenever possible. Where possible, hoses should be run low in the room, all other factors being equal,
and in any case the locations of hoses must be chosen so that they will not be exposed to temperatures
above 100°C. For hoses longer than 10m and up to 20m, please refer to the high pressure hose technical
specification document on the Partner Site. Longer hoses require an increased internal diameter of 5/16" to
account for the higher pressure drop. IMPORTANT: Plumis’ most recent guidance document on hose
specification is more detailed and overrides this document if there is any ambiguity.

A Quick Connect with Test Point and locking pin are supplied to connect the high pressure side of the
pump to the spray head. A small o-ring is included and already attached to the Quick Connect with Test
Point. The locking pin retains the quick connector in the pump outlet but can be easily removed, for
example in order to drain water from the high pressure hose. The Test Point adaptor is required as part of
the commissioning procedure (see page 50).

The Automist Smartscan pump unit should be housed close to a 3/4” BSP water supply with an approved
isolation valve to the check valve. A synthetic rubber washer is supplied with each device to facilitate fitting
to the flat-faced outlet.

IMPORTANT! Do not attempt to operate the pump without the quick connector o-ring. Always properly
replace the quick connector, o-ring and locking pin after removal.

Only a single spray head can be used with each Automist Smartscan pump.

IMPORTANT! To enable a consistent pressure and seal for all low pressure water interface washers, the
correct amount of torque should be applied to each low pressure connection. This can be accomplished in
2 ways (with the washers and mating surfaces kept dry):

i) Apply 6Nm using a calibrated torque wrench

OR

i) Hand tighten the hose.

ii) Using a conventional wrench, apply another 1/2 turn clockwise to guarantee a reliable seal.

D) Other Electrical Connections

This section describes general electrical connection arrangements for Automist Smartscan.

IMPORTANT! The Automist Smartscan pump should be positioned in a safe and dry location where it is
easily accessible, the button will not be pushed accidentally, and the front panel remains visible when the
access door is open. For installations that require a wireless relay receiver, position the relay base on the
wall next to the Automist Smartscan pump unit, as close as possible to the front of the cupboard door.

IMPORTANT! Connecting the power requires a suitably qualified & competent person. Switch off electricity
at the mains before working on existing circuits.

IMPORTANT! Follow the detection/relay guidance on page 33.

IMPORTANT! The relay must be set to continuous, not pulse mode, if applicable.

General wiring arrangement for Automist Smartscan. In most installations the

remote STOP is not installed and the associated wire loop remains intact as supplied.

The Smartscan spray head connects to the pump using a Smartscan Head Cable as specified above (p35).
This is achieved by crimping the short trailing Smartscan Head Cable at the rear of the pump to the cable
that has been installed running to the Smartscan spray head. Use pliers to crimp the Butt splice clips when
connecting the pump to the data cable. The cable sequence is critical.

NOTE: Do not strip the wire when crimping the Butt splice clips. Wires are simply inserted into the housing
and crimped down, which actuates an insulation displacement mechanism, automatically connecting the
two wires into an environmentally gel sealed unit. For neatness it is preferable to enclose these connections
using a Chocbox or similar.

In addition to the alarm relay input cable, Smartscan head cable and the power cable at the rear of the unit,
the pump features a single core loop cable. This is to allow an auxiliary (external) STOP button to be added,
for example if the pump is installed enclosed in a space where the STOP button is inaccessible. Where
required, the loop should be cut and each end of the wire connected via FP200 or equivalent cable to a
momentary action, normally closed, push button switch (see diagram above). The button should have an
appropriate IP rating (e.g. IPX5 if used in the room protected by Automist Smartscan), located as close to
the pump as possible and should be clearly labelled. The auxiliary button cannot be used to commission
the unit but can be used to enter ALARM TEST MODE (see page 49). Technical notes on suitable buttons are
available from the Plumis Partner Site.

E) The Automist Smartscan Controls

STOP Button: Pressing the STOP button during a fire condition will stop the Automist Smartscan pump for 2
minutes. If at the end of 2 minutes, an alarm input remains active, Automist Smartscan will recommence mist
operation. If the alarm condition has ended, Automist Smartscan will return to stand-by.

In error conditions, pressing the STOP button temporarily hushes the error sounds.

In the SYSTEM OK stand-by, the STOP button may be used to enter ALARM TEST MODE. ALARM TEST MODE is
activated by pressing the STOP button once. The SYSTEM OK LED with then start flashing green on and off – this
indicates that ALARM MODE is activated. In this mode you have a short time to test alarms in the home without
activating Automist Smartscan. ALARM MODE is deactivated by pushing the STOP button again; this will be
confirmed by the SYSTEM OK LED returning to constantly lit green. Note: if you do not deactivate ALARM MODE,
the system will automatically disable it after 5 minutes.

ALARM LED: Lit red to indicate an ALARM condition.

FAULT LED: Lit yellow to indicate a fault. Please refer to the troubleshooting guide. N.B. When Automist Smartscan
is powered up for the first time the yellow FAULT LED will flash twice to indicate the system has not been
commissioned

F) Commissioning and maintenance

IMPORTANT! Commissioning is required:

• Once all the components of the system have been installed and the system is powered.
• As part of a yearly maintenance cycle.
• If plumbing or construction work takes places, new alarms are installed or maintenance work
occurs which could affect the system.
• Commissioning must be performed annually by an Accredited Automist Smartscan Installer.

When Automist Smartscan is powered up for the first time the yellow FAULT LED will flash twice to indicate
that the system has not been commissioned. Commissioning is a simple programmed procedure which
allows Automist Smartscan to be tested. During commissioning, the pump runs for 60 seconds and the
output pressure is monitored.

Use the Automist Smartscan commissioning tool to prevent mist being sprayed into the room. The spray
nozzle and the screws holes to affix it are only exposed during the commissioning procedure. Use the
provided screws and rubber gasket to fasten the tool in place and put a bucket under the hose during the
test procedure.

Commissioning Procedure
1. Unscrew the cap and connect the test hose and gauge to the test point adapter.
2. Press and hold the STOP button for 5 seconds. Three short beeps accompanied by four short
flashes of the ALARM LED and the blue LED at the Smartscan head indicate that you may
release the button and that you entered the first stage of the COMMISSIONING MODE “Sensor
Testing”.
3. The spray head will scan back and forth and stop at the hottest observed position for 5
seconds. It will then scan again, back and forth, and stop once again at the hottest observed
position. Please note that you will need to run through at least one successful scan, back and
forth, to ensure that the internal logic also validates if the sensor is performing as expected.
4. Verify that the heat scanning system works correctly at 3 different angles. Use your hand at a
fixed position and at a distance of 5cm from Smartscan to simulate a heat source.
5. This process will continue for 5 minutes or until the STOP button is pressed on the pump.
6. Press the STOP button when you are confident that the sensor is working properly. This will
take you to the next stage of the COMMISSIONING MODE “Pressure Testing”.

S MA RT SC AN

7. The spray head will now deploy to around 90° position, pointing straight out from the
faceplate.
8. Connect the commission kit to the spray head
9. The next step of commission is testing the alarm: within 5 minutes, test the heat alarm or fire
panel output as recommended in its user manual (e.g. press the test button). The alarm will
need to be kept sounding for at more than 12 seconds.
10. The system will indicate the alarm input by flashing a distinctive LED flash pattern on the head
and the pump will sound an alarm for 20 seconds; but will not run.
11. After the 20 seconds warning, the pump will run for 60 seconds.
12. Check the gauge and ensure that the output pressure reaches a stable 75 to 100 bar.

75

100

IMPORTANT! The pump features a cut-out which will disable it if the pressure becomes
excessive, so it is critically important not to leave an installed system with a high out-of-spec
pressure. By leaving an installed system with pressures outside the specified range, you might
become liable for deaths or injuries. If the achieved output pressure is outside the specified
range, refer to the commissioning troubleshooting guide (see page 54) and contact Plumis on
020 7871 3899 if the situation cannot be resolved.

13. Following a successful pressure test, the high pressure hose must be cleared of water by
connecting a suitable pump to the Plumis supplied attachment, that is connected to the test
point tee.

14. the commissioning tool and other aids obstructing the spray head should be promptly
removed.

15. Wipe the head IR sensor (below the nozzle) dry with a dry cloth, to ensure that there is no
water left on the IR sensor.

16. Press the STOP button again to complete the COMMISSIONING MODE and bring the system to
STANDBY MODE. The green ‘SYSTEM OK’ LED will now be on constantly.

17. Check that there are no leaks behind the head, at the pump or along the hoses.

18. In the event that commissioning has been unsuccessful, the pump will beep and the amber
‘FAULT’ LED will flash twice. If this occurs, the system will require recommissioning. This can be
done by pressing the STOP button and then restarting the commissioning process.

19. Once you have successfully commissioned your unit, complete the online commissioning form
and attach a layout diagram and photos.

20. Place the two warning stickers and the commissioning label:
• Label the separate circuit on the circuit breaker
• Label the heat alarm that triggers Automist Smartscan, preferably near the test button
• Complete the installer commissioning label and affix to your Automist Smartscan unit

IMPORTANT! Record the output pressure from the commissioning gauge on the Installer Label (as shown
above) and keep a note of the details for the online commissioning form.

21. Carefully remove the test hose and gauge and re-attach the cap on the test point adapter.

IMPORTANT! Leaving water in high pressure hoses following the commissioning/servicing process can lead
to dripping nozzles, particularly if any part of the hose passes above the nozzles. In order to prevent this, the
water should be expelled after commissioning. Always properly replace the quick connector, o-ring and
locking pin after any such operation. Failure to do so could result in death or injury.

Post-installation checklist – Key points for installers and

Building Control

Power supply
• The Automist Smartscan circuit should be clearly labelled (a sticker is provided for this purpose).
• Power to Automist Smartscan must be provided via an unswitched fused connection unit (FCU).
• Automist Smartscan should be supplied using FP200 cable or better, ideally inside conduit or protected
50mm deep within a wall
• Automist Smartscan may be protected by an RCD or RCBO but this protection must not be shared with
other circuits. Therefore, Automist Smartscan should be connected to the non-protected side of the
consumer unit.
• The circuit supplying a single Automist Smartscan unit would commonly be protected by a type ‘C10’ or
‘C16’ MCB, for example, or ‘C20’ / ‘C32’ for two Automist Smartscan units.

Water Supply
• check valve and filter must be installed to ensure back flow protection to the mains water and debris
into the pump (supplied in kit).
• Inlet water must be connected and the valve left open.
• WRAS approved isolation valves (or equivalent) are required so that the Automist Smartscan system
can be shut off from the water main. All such valves should be labelled with the included supply
warning labels.
• Priority valves are not normally required but should be used in circumstances where the water supply
may otherwise be inadequate.
• Several pumps can be supplied from the same 15mm water pipe as long as they are not intended to
activate at the same time. Larger diameter piping may be required for simultaneous activation of more
than a single pump.

Pump & Placement

• All Automist Smartscan units should have been successfully commissioned using heat detectors, with
both thermal scan and outlet pressure verified.
• Minimum ventilation requirements met (124 litres)
• In a room or cupboard that is separated by a fire resisting partition from the mist-protected room(s)
that it serves, or the pump located such that it is: a) unlikely to be affected by a fire b) protected in the
event of fire; c) unlikely to be affected by flooding.
• All Automist Smartscan pumps should show “System OK” (green LED), indicating it has been
successfully commissioned.

Alarm Relay Placement

• Each Automist unit should be activated by its own separate relay device.4

4 Single throw relays must not be shared between multiple pumps. Each pump must have a separate relay, or
where a multi-throw relay has been used, each pump must have a separate “throw”.

Plumis Ltd Copyright © 2017. All Rights Reserved. Page 48 of 64

®

Automist Smartscan® Handbook v1.2.3

S MA RT SC AN

• Each relay must be located so that it is a) unlikely to be affected by a fire; b) protected in the event of
fire; c) unlikely to be affected by flooding or by dripping/splashing water; d) unlikely to be subject to
unusual vibration.
• Any potential house coding problems or fire panel cause-and-effect issues should be checked by
entering ALARM TEST MODE on all pumps and sounding both related and unrelated detectors.

Head Placement
• Between 1.2 and 1.4m high for Smartscan, between 1.4m and 1.5m for fixed head.
• In a “preferred position” where it is not susceptible to furniture obstruction
• Head placement matches the layout drawing supplied with the commissioning form.

High Pressure Hose

• High pressure hose should have been flushed with air to remove water, avoid dripping and Legionella.
• High pressure hose should be protected by a fire resisting barrier, and a fire resisting sleeve if exposed.
• It is critically important that the high pressure hose locking pin (behind the pump) is in position so that
the quick connector and o-ring are firmly retained after any operations that required disconnection of
the high pressure line.

Coverage
• If protecting the means of escape only, ensure all adjacent rooms which are not separated by a fire
resisting door are covered. Covering only the stairs will not suppress fires in non-separated adjacent
rooms, negatively impacting tenability on the escape route.

Documentation
• Installer sign-off details (including pump pressure) are noted on pump
• An occupant information sheet should have been provided to the property
• The Installer Commissioning form should have been provided (can be obtained from Plumis or the
installer) with a matching layout drawing

The Plumis Warranty Certificate is provided (can be obtained from Plumis) once the layout has been
submitted and approved by Plumis.

Maintenance
Automist Smartscan requires an annual service by a Plumis-authorised person. The annual service consists
of a full recommissioning of the system (alarm & discharge), as detailed in this Technical Handbook.

Cleaning
The Automist Smartscan wall-mounted head should be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Do not attempt to
clean with any other chemical cleaners or abrasives

Repair
CAUTION! Do not attempt to repair the Automist Smartscan wall head or pump unit. Doing so will
invalidate your warranty.

Automist Smartscan should be serviced or replaced if any part of the system, including any heat alarms, has
been exposed to fire conditions.

Verify that the water mains connection can supply at least 6

litres per minute (lpm) of flow and if possible check that the
static inlet pressure is at least 1 bar.

If the flow is close to or below 6 lpm, the mains pressure

may be too low for Automist Smartscan to operate
correctly, or there may be constrictions in the water supply.
A plumber should be called to resolve the issue.
