Drawing Standard Files

The Drawing Standard files (dws) are used in AutoCAD to verify the layers existing in the
drawing adhere to the desired standards. These files are:
 Sample Company Layers.dws
 Sample NCS Layers.dws

Drawing Layer States

The Drawing Layer States files (las) are used by AutoCAD to set the characteristics oflayers
that exist in the drawing (ON/OFF, FREEZE/THAW, colors, linetypes, etc.). After using the
dwt file mentioned above when creating a new drawing, you can restore the default layer
state to ensure the layers have the proper characteristics. There are two layer state files
provided:
 Sample Company Layers.las
 Sample NCS Layers.las

Layer Naming Conventions

Company Layer Standards

The Company Layer Standards use a three field convention.
 Field one identifies the discipline
 Field two identifies the feature
 Field three identifies the description or attribute
Example: CT-ROAD-CTR would be:
CT = Civil/Transportation
ROAD = Road,street…
CTR = Centerline

Refer to Sample Company Layers.xls for a detailed list of layer names and discipline names.

National Cad Standards

This layer naming convention will closely follow the National Cad Standards (AIA) layering
convention. This will allow for a more uniform and extensive layer list.
