There are five defined layer name data fields:
Discipline Designator
Major Group
Minor Groups I
Minor Group II
Status
The Discipline and Major Groups are mandatory. The Minor Group and Status fields are
optional. Each data field is separated from adjacent fields by a dash (“-“) for clarity.
The document will use a combination of Level 1 and Level II Discipline Designators for Layer
Names:

For a complete list of Major and Minor Groups refer to the National Cad Standards
Documentation.
There is an Annotation Field that can be added to the end of Layers to designate elements.
Table 5 shows the Acceptable Annotation Fields:

Any Layers needed that are not in the standards should be documented. If you need to
create a layer, use a 4 character Abbreviation (look in the Abbreviations of the National Cad
Standards for possible choices).
Colors
Colors and linetypes of entities shall generally be defined “bylayer”. Colors for each layer
are determined from the Plot Style Table. Refer to the pen table files (CTB) for colors
assigned in these standards.
