Visbreaker Unit REFINING | APPLICATIONS AND PRODUCT PORTFOLIO

2017

A visbreaker reduces the quantity of residual oil produced in the distillation of crude oil and increases the
yield of more valuable middle distillates (heating oil and diesel) by the refinery. A visbreaker thermally
cracks large hydrocarbon molecules in the oil by heating in a furnace to reduce its viscosity and to produce
small quantities of light hydrocarbons (LPG and gasoline). The process name of “visbreaker” refers to the
fact that the process reduces (i.e., breaks) the viscosity of the residual oil. The process is non-catalytic.

Water & Process Technologies’ membrane chemical solutions include a variety of products such as
antiscalants, biocontrol products and cleaners.
HyperSperse* MDC and MSI series antiscalants optimize reverse osmosis operations at enhanced recovery
and extend membrane life, reducing capital and operating cost, reducing the energy requirement and
reducing the water produced.
Kleen* MCT cleaners restore membranes for UF/MF/RO and NF performance, lengthen membrane life and
reduce membrane replacement.
InSight technology is a Water & Process Technologies’ web-based APM platform that captures and
translates chemical, physical or performance data into valuable information. InSight ultimately provides
the knowledge customers need to get the most out of their membrane systems, at the lowest total cost of
operation. InSight uses data and transforms it into meaningful and actionable information that enables:
• Visualizing current conditions and parameters trending
• Diagnosing problems and seeing opportunities for improvement
• Alarming on events or trends before they threaten asset production or integrity
• Reporting on key performance indicators and their impact on business objectives
InSight for water preparation systems allow the application of the right amount of chemicals at the right
time to allow for a safe and cost effective operation.

Product Solutions / Customer Benefits • Polyamine technology reduces the potential for both dissolved oxygen and carbonic acid corrosion failures in the boiler feedwater
and steam condensate systems. Our research has demonstrated that the Polyamine’s dual mechanisms of surface adsorption and
neutralization of acidic contaminants provides highly effective protection of metal surfaces throughout the steam generating system.
CorTrol IS/OS Series Inorganic and Organic Oxygen Scavengers
• Reboiler corrosion protection
• Controls oxygen corrosion
• Contributes to passivation Reduced Total Cost of Ownership
• Contributes no inorganic solids to feedwater • While treatment cost benefits are very system-specific, a Polyamine program can often reduce overall treatment costs by minimizing
• Improves boiler reliability the need to feed, inventory and monitor separate oxygen scavenger and neutralizing amine products.
• Residual test available • Reduce or minimize the need for satellite amine treatments.
• A significant aspect of the cost reduction equation is the efficient recycle of both the Polyamine and neutralizing amine corrosion
inhibitors with the steam condensate when that stream is returned as boiler feedwater. Many dissolved oxygen scavengers, such as
sodium sulfite, are entirely non-volatile. Thus, they provide no protection of the steam condensate surfaces, and are lost entirely to
the boiler blowdown.
• Can offer flexibility in managing crude unit operation to maximize desired product mix to meet market demand.

TrueSense for Cooling REFINING | APPLICATIONS AND PRODUCT PORTFOLIO

2017

Effective cooling water treatment must include careful management of the interrelationship between
corrosion, deposition, and microbiological activity. While previous treatment methods required individual
and manual measurement for each of the three applied elements of a treatment program, these
intensive, manual assessments could not be performed accurately or frequently enough to realize the
full opportunity of protecting asset performance and reducing cost direct measurement of the functional
chemistries that drive success for all three dimensions of successful cooling water management. Unique
to Water & Process Technologies, TrueSense takes measurement and control technology for multiple
analyses to the next level—with a single detection platform that offers simplicity, stability and easy
installation. What’s more, Water & Process Technologies can configure a unique solution designed to meet
your specific goals and budget, taking into consideration:
•
Chemicals Usage: Applying the right number of chemicals at the right time—nothing more, nothing less. Consistent application with
minimal variation ensures system performance and the confidence to engage in other improvements that contribute to lowering total
operating cost.

•
Water Use and Consumption: As freshwater becomes increasingly scarce and expensive, Water & Process Technologies
understands the need to use less. With Water & Process Technologies technology, customers can confidently consider operating
under conditions that reduce the use of fresh water, and consider alternative sources of reused or recycled water that previously
would have been considered an unmanageable technical risk.

• O
perational Efficiency and Productivity: Reducing the risk to any unplanned loss in production, whether due to inadequate heat
exchange or capital equipment failure, is important. Additionally, reducing the total cost of cooling operations over time without
disrupting production, experiencing catastrophic loss or compromising safety—with the greenest footprint possible. TrueSense
enables customers to reset their expectations and redefine
