PROF.

SADAO SATO'S
MEAW GUIDE
TECHNIQUE

PROF. SADAO SATO

WHAT IS THE MEAW
TECHNIQUE
The Meaw orthodontic technique was created by Prof. Sadao
Sato, Professor in Orthodontics at the Department of
Craniomandibular Growth and Development at Yokosuka
University - Kanagawa - Japan.
The focus of Prof. Sato's teaching is the diagnosis and
orthodontic treatment of complex malocclusions by
controlling the occlusal plane with the Multiloop Edgewise
Arch Wire (MEAW).
COS'È LA TECNICA MEAW
 In order to make a correct diagnosis and an appropriate
treatment plan, is important to recognize the
characteristics of malocclusion and to understand the key
role of occlusion and its genesis. With this approach the
orthodontist is able to treat many dysfunctions of the
masticatory system, without surgical and/or extractive
approach.
WHAT IS THE MEAW
TECHNIQUE

The occlusal plane is in fact one of the most important

functional parameters of the masticatory organ. The jaw
functionally adapts to this plane, so any change will follow the
positions of the jaw and the relationship with the skeletal
frame (Denture Frame).
So the Meaw can be consider as orthognathic and not simply
orthodontic treatment if  associated with the Meaw arch.
COS'È LA TECNICA MEAW
WHAT IS THE MEAW
TECHNIQUE

The Meaw technique can be used in the treatment of patients

 with TMD and in all cases in which prosthetic rehabilitation is
associated to the orthognathic problems.  Moreover could be
treated all the cases with "high" algic symptomatology like
headache, TMD pain, cervical spine instability, problems of
swallowing, motor instability (small vertigo), Eagle syndrome
etc.
The diagnostic criteria
COS'È of the treatment
LA TECNICA MEAW is based on the
principles of clinical functional analysis:
 - Gnatological examination (according to R. Slavicek);
- Examination of the arches in the articulator, in Reference
Position;
- Electronic condylography;
- Cephalometry proposed by Prof. Sadao Sato.
WHAT IS THE MEAW
TECHNIQUE

The criteria of the therapy is divided in two large types: high

or low angle and, in skeletal class I-II-III, with or without
crowding.
 The application Meaw technique is based on the analysis of
the inclination of the occlusal plane and the later discrepancy
that Meaw can correct. The flexed extension of the skull is at
the basis of the interpretation of the degree of the occlusal
plane inclination COS'È
with theLAconsequent
TECNICA MEAWmandibular
repositioning in facial growth.
WHAT IS THE MEAW
TECHNIQUE

MEAW is a very effective and innovative orthodontic

technique, with great potential, that finds particular
indication in complex cases, TMJ cases, or surgical cases.
The "key point" of this approach consists in modifying the
inclination of the occlusal plane with standard Edgewise
multi-brackets equipment with 018 × 025 slot, and
coordinated arches made of blue Elgiloy wire 016 x 022.
 The L loops fromCOS'È LA TECNICA
the mesial MEAW to the second molar
of the canine
gives great elasticity to the wire and, in association with the
introduction of folds of 1 ° -2 ° -3 ° order, allows intrude or
extrude or torque and uprighting to change the occlusal plane

COS'È LA TECNICA MEAW

The original diagnostic procedure underlying the MEAW

technique is in agreement with the Slavicek school, based on
the use of axiography, cephalometry and assembly in an
individual articulator.
 The key concept of the axiography establishes that, through
the primary localization of the hinge axis, it is possible to
trace translational guides, not influenced by the rotation
during the movements.
This concept of a co-linear path to the axis, was presented by
Prof. Slavicek in 1976.
WHAT IS THE MEAW
TECHNIQUE

Eliminating the distortion due to movements with a rotation

combined with translation, is also possible to compare the
paths and therefore the useful for diagnostics.
The axiography, carried out with a para-occlusal clutch,
register the condylar movements of protrusion, retrusion,
right and left mediotrusion.
Chewing, phonation, swallowing,
COS'È LA bruxism
TECNICA MEAW and evaluating joint
behavior can be also visualized by electronic tracing.
The axis orbital plane, defined by R. Slavicek as the individual
plane of the patient, can be transferred in the lateral
cephalometry  and in the articulator, in order to establish the
equivalent plane and kinematic movements.
WHY USE THE MEAW
TECHNIQUE

Why use the MEAW technique:

• Predictable orthodontic treatment in complex cases;
• Success in the treatment of dysfunctional patients;
• Non-traumatic treatment: No orthognathic surgery and
premolar extraction;
• Orthodontic treatment that requires only a few months of
management and stable life-long;
• Innovative early COS'È
treatment, with a strong
LA TECNICA MEAW impact on skeletal
growth;
• Orthodontic treatment that avoids extra-oral forces and
removable appliance;
• Effective treatment in sleep and breathing problems;
• Improves posture problems and symptoms of the ANS;
• Improves the overall quality of life of patients.
Types of malocclusions treatment and stability:
• Open bite malocclusions;
• Complex Skeletal Class III cases;
• Complex Skeletal Class II cases;
• Severe crowding;
• Mandibular Lateral Deviation MLD;
• TMJ dysfunction.

THE ADVANTAGES OF
MEAW TECHNIQUE

The MEAW technique offers several advantages for the

patient:
• Avoid the orthognathic surgery;
• Avoid the premolar extraction;
• Avoid extra-oral forces;
• Reduce the time of treatment;
• Allows excellent aesthetics and functional results:
