Introduction

• 25 Years ago, the internet changed the way we do business, today, we find ourselves once again on the verge of
such a drastic shift in business opportunities.
• IoT is creating a giant network where all the devices are connected to each other. This is driving the automation to a
next level where devices will communicate with each other and make decisions without any human interventions.
• Any physical object can be transformed into an IoT device if it can be connected & controlled by internet.
• IoT Enablers: RFIDs (radio waves electronically track the tags on object), Sensors (devices to detect changes in an
environment), Nanotechnology (small devices less than a hundred nanometers), Smart networks.
• There are already more connected things than people in the world.
• The three Tsunamis of internet (Fixed, mobile & IoT).

• The perfect marriage (IoT & Big data). There are trillions GB of data
through IoT. Billions of devices connected to the internet, all of these
devices will gather, analyze, share, and transmit data in real time. IoT is
acting as a major source for the data. Hence, without the data, IoT devices
would not hold the functionalities and capabilities which have made them
achieve so much worldwide attention.
• The brain and the body (IoT & AI) IoT sends the data to AI and thus it can
take smart decisions. As our ears, eyes, nose, tongue and skin sends Industry
sensors to our brains and then we can get the information. AI and IoT 4.0
cannot work separately. They are inter-linked. Without the smart devices we
will never get any smart machines.
• (Cloud) it has the responsibility of accepting tons of information from the
gateway, store and process them into resources and send them to the user
interface (web or mobile app).
• IoT is a King, Big data is a Queen and Cloud is a Palace.

Service Management
Data mining, security, control
Securing Analysis, extract the needed info, has Operational
Support Service (OSS) for device modeling & configuration. Also,
has billing support system (BSS) for billing & reporting. Gateway & Network

Configurations
More objects become traceable,
threats to personal privacy become more serious,
so data ownership need to be considered.

Privacy
The equipment should be Certified by international Objects will add billions of IP addresses, IPv4 cant
standardization institutes, open standard reduces Standardization support, so IPv6 is the only solution. Person = 40B
Addressing
the risk of technology. devices.

Without roaming M2M applications simply Encryption algorithms needed to be more

Security efficient. & that need high power, traditional
may not be viable, Operators have to
establish a commercial roaming models.
Roaming
Regulatory security may be not sufficient to address low
cost devices.
Issues
Study additional spectrum available. Many Spectrum License needed if dealing with
applications require 2.4 - 5GHz, Spectrum Licenses mobile networks (2G,3G & 4G), there are
unlicensed radio frequencies, ISM (industrial,
scientific & medical).
Hardware Processors
Arduino

The simplest, the first micro controller based development board, just download the Arduino software and to start the code, basic
languages (C,C++).
Advantages: Inexpensive, Multi platform, Flexible and easy prototyping, free code libraries, More reliable for hardware applications.

Raspberry Pi

A small credit-card sized computer developed in the UK. Robotics. More than 5 million Raspberry Pis have been sold before February
2015, according to the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Basic languages: python, scratch.
Advantages: Multiple tasks at a time like a computer, Easiest internet connectivity, More reliable for software applications.
Platforms
IoT platforms are a vital component of the IoT ecosystem, they are facilitates communication, data flow, device
management, and the functionality of applications. As of last year, there were over 450 IoT platforms in the rapidly
changing platform vendor market, and I’ve heard we could be pushing toward 1,000 platforms soon.

IoT platforms help:

• Connect hardware, such as sensors and devices
• Handle different hardware and software communication protocols
• Provide security and authentication for devices and users
• Collect, visualize, and analyze data the sensors and devices gather
• Integrate all of the above with other web services
Jordanian case

• Jordan is a high-tech country despite its low GDP, People are hungry for technological solutions, even though the
IoT’s adoption is happening at a slow rate, and still at an early stage in terms of implementation and regulation.
• The Green paper is a first step towards for developing the legal or regulatory framework. The paper addressed many
issues like (Security, privacy, numbering, addressing, spectrum, licensing, standardization, communication
techniques & roaming ).
• Zain “Tanki“ to measure and control the level of liquid in the tank.
• Umniah “Smart homes” doors, heaters, lights, and water heaters via app, Video Analytics Monitoring for retailers.
• IOTSENS “Water meters” to connect thousands of smart water meters under the same communication, to transmit
data.
• Orange “Vehicle Tracking” allows you to locate, track, monitor & control your vehicles.
• LATRO “Electrical meter devices” to take readings of these meters remotely without the need to access them
geographically.
Conclusions & Recommendations

• IoT has the potential to change the world & can help deliver a wild-range of socio-economic solutions.
• The transition from traditional services to IoT requires policy makers & regulators to apply existing
rules in a transparent & consistent way.
• Governments can help IoT grow through the following: licensing, spectrum availability, data privacy,
network security, numbering, addresses, roaming, switching, standardization, Building trust &
Promoting investment.
• Operators have to get out of their comfort zone, they could start to diversify existing offerings by
providing IoT network integration services, or even device lifecycle management to its enterprise
customers. Or new paths like delivering IoT platform services & industry solutions.
• The market opportunities consist of everything from network, connectivity up to software & Apps.
Exercises
• Case study exercises:

• Elderly monitoring (Monitoring an elderly family member)

• Smart public garbage bin (Improving the efficiency of waste collection)
• Security alarms (to keep home protected)
