Research Topic / Area of Study Microbiology

Connection to research paper Vaccinations and immunity would fall under the umbrella of
clinical microbiology, which is one of the specializations of
microbiology I covered in my paper and the branch I am most
interested in.

Goal of product / what problem or My goal is to educate fellow students about how flu vaccines
need solved or addressed increase immunity to the flu virus and to clear up common
misconceptions about the side effects and effectiveness of flu
vaccines.

Estimated time to complete 5 months (October to February). 50+ hours of work in total.
● October: Meet with Mrs. Field, determine what unit I am
coming in to teach during and set a date, begin research
● November: Create and send out survey, analyze data
from survey, begin rough draft of pamphlet and model,
begin drafting lesson plans
● December-February: Finalization of pamphlet and
model. Timing of the completion and presentation of
lesson plans will depend on what unit Mrs. Field and I
determine will be most appropriate for me to present
during. Add photos and documentation from lesson into
Pride Presentation.

People who will assist (if applicable) Mrs. Field and peers (for survey data collection).

Estimated cost / investment About $20-$40 to buy materials to create the model and print the
pamphlets.

What will judges see at The judges will see my model of how the flu vaccine increases
presentation? (evidence of work immunity to the flu virus, receive copies of the pamphlet I
and development) create, view the lesson plans I created for teaching Mrs. Field’s
class and the activities completed by Mrs. Field’s AP Bio Class,
and see photographic evidence of me teaching the lesson.

Personal stretch (area of growth) Creating a model of how the flu vaccine leads to immunity
allows me to practice critical thinking skills essential to
microbiology. The process of sending out a survey to peers helps
me practice the process of data analysis and collection similar to
what real microbiologists do. The process of creating a pamphlet
about my findings helps me practice compiling a scientific
research report. Teaching this information to one of Mrs. Field’s
biology classes lets me practice real-world skills of presenting
research findings to a scientific board and allows me to use my
research to solve a problem. I have never created a lesson plan
before and it will require a lot of preparation and confidence to
teach a class.

Product Description:
1. Meet with Mrs. Field to determine what class (regular Biology or AP Biology) would be best
suited for my lesson and what unit would be most relevant to my model. We would also meet to
figure out approximately what date I would be presenting to her class.
2. Gather research from reliable internet sources on the flu vaccine, including how it works and
adapts as flu strains change from year to year.
3. Create survey for peers to fill out, will ask for information like: current vaccine knowledge,
questions they have about vaccines, whether or not they have received vaccines, and experiences
with the flu vaccine.
4. Analyze data from survey.
5. Based on my survey data and research, I will compile a pamphlet that outlines how vaccines
promote immunity and why they are important to health, how the flu vaccine specifically works,
and clear up any common misconceptions about vaccines.
6. Then, I will plan and assemble a tangible 3D model of how the flu vaccine promotes the creation
of antibodies and increases immunity to the flu virus based on what I found in my research.
7. Next, I will develop an interactive lesson plan that shares what I learned with the class with the
help of Mrs. Field. I will create a powerpoint for the lesson and have the students complete an
activity that provides documentation for my lesson and reflects what the students learned. I will
have Mrs. Field take pictures while I am teaching the lesson. I will prioritize making the lesson
relevant to what the class is studying and ensure that it is applicable to their life.
8. Then, Mrs. Field and I will meet again to confirm the date on when I will come in to teach her
class and she will do a final check of my lesson plans.
9. Finalization of model and pamphlets, including printing of pamphlets and assembly of model.
10. Finally, I will carry out my lesson plan with Mrs. Field’s class. I will compile the activity
completed by her students in a google docs folder as evidence of my lesson and include the
pictures of me teaching in my Pride Presentation.
