Is there such a thing as the self? And Handbook of Self and Identity
Title of the Article

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. In the handbook of self and identity, I have a difficulty in understanding the
concept of the Dual-Processing Models. I can’t seem to grasp the idea due
to the technicality of the terms.

ii. Self and Identity are Mental Concepts – I can’t see the correlation between
the relationship between self and identity being mental concepts based on
what I read from the text.

iii. In the “Is there such a thing as the self” article, in the thought experiment that
involved teleportation. I have a difficult time in understanding the point of it
having “psychological continuity.”

2. Insights (What new insights or learning did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that,

Today we have a complete and precise understanding of the concept about

the self and identity.

ii. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize

There are still discussions as to answer the unknown gaps about the concept
of the self and the identity today. There are experts in their corresponding fields
that still debates about the precise detail of the self and the identity. It was
stated in the article that the concept of self and identity is still being talked
about then up until now. This shows that the concept of the self and identity is
still trending in the fields of psychology, the social sciences, philosophy, and
more.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that

The concept of the self and identity or its definition are the same – meaning
that they could be used interchangeably when speaking or used in the same
context,

iv. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize

That the concept of the self and identity are different, and this can be done
by considering them as a series of nested constructs with the self as the most
including term, and self-concepts being embedded within the self, and
identities being embedded within self-concepts.
v. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that

Self is a changing fluid concept that is really stable, and it changes according
to one’s experience in this world. Because I knew that every people changed due
to their interactions with other people.

vi. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize

That the concept of the self is stable, and it depends on the wellbeing of a certain
individual. This means that every one of us have our own sense of self-stability. It was
stated in the article that there are studies and research that the self is consistently
changing, however, having a stable self leads to a positive outlook in life.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?

i. What are concrete examples of collectivistic perspective?

ii. Why is it stated that the concept of the self is fluid, but it is ever changing
when we experience things – leading to changing ourselves.

iii. Why do people test different psychological theories on animals even

though us people said that we are not like animals?
