Power Transformers

SKIPPER manufactures Power Transformers from 20 MVA to 50 MVA, upto

132KV, with ON-LOAD Tap changers. Our plants are equipped with skilled
workforce, world class machineries, modern tolls and backed by state of art
technology.

Design

The windings form the most vital part of the transformer. Highly sophisticated design techniques are

applied for electrical, mechanical and thermal stability. Helical and continuous disc type windings are

made as they provide maximum strength and short circuit withstand capabilities. In case of multiple

radial wires continuous transpositions are done to eliminate inter-strand circulating currents. The coils

are pressed before core-coil assembly to ensure proper trouble free service. Clamping rings are placed

on top and bottom of the winding to ensure high axial short circuit withstand capability to the

transformer.

Process

The core coil assembly is gently lowered into the finished and cleaned tanks and locked into

position. The assembly then goes for a controlled heating and vacuum drying process to

ensure complete removal of moisture from the assembly. At the end of the drying process

oil is filled under high level of vacuum in the transformer and then fixing of external components

and top cover assembly is done. Soon after the vacuum filling, the transformer will be offered

for testing following the expiry of a specified standing time.

Testing

Each transformer is subjected to all routine tests to ensure compliance with

standards / customer's specifications. All accessories are thoroughly checked
for the functional compliance prior to the dispatch.

Distribution Transformers

Usage

• Conventional distribution transformers

• Completely Self Protected single phase transformers
• Completely Self Protected three phase transformers

The conventional distribution transformers are source of power supply to the

public and Small Scale Industries etc., having least protection devices like

arcing horns on HV side, provided with pole mounted lightning arresters

and fuse links on LV side.

The survey reveals power availability to public has many times interruption. To
overcome this problem, the next stage of development was initially sealed type
transformers which was also not effective improvement in power supply. Finally, this
necessitated the need of self-protected transformers (CSP). Such transformers are
advantageous in the following way to the utilities.

Prevent excessive over loading transformers there by increases the life of

Transformers.
• Avoids power leakage to unauthorized public utilities
• Least maintenance

SDS (SEIL Drying System) Transformers
On-line filter system
The “On-line filter system” in SEIL transformers comprises of Ion-exchange column and filters which controls moisture content in oil and
reduces acidity of oil also. The system removes moisture from oil to less than 15 PPM. The process does not affect dissolved gas in oil and
also does not remove oil oxidation inhibitors, if present. This prevents de-polymerization of insulation paper. The reduction of water content
in oil prevents bubble formation which causes PD. The system can anytime be removed / isolated from transformer without taking shut-
down , to replace or activate the charge inside.

If desired, On-line moisture sensor can be provided to check the results any time.
Wet transformers can be dried without being taken out of service.
Moisture increase in transformer from 3% to 4% causes aging similar to
6-8 degree C temp. rise. The device removes moisture from oil slowly
and finally brings it to a very low level thereby extending life of transformer
and increasing its reliability. It is a proven fact that indicative life-time of
transformer at 80 degree C is 40 yrs. if moisture content is 1% in paper ;
and 10 years if moisture content is 3.-4% .

Applications of SDS
• Dry wet transformers
• Dry transformers not fit for full vacuum
• Dry transformers which can not be taken out of service

Benefits
• Transformer remains in service during drying process
• Reduces dry-out cost
• Improve oil di-electric value
• Improve transformer power factor
• Operates continuously un-attended
• Extends oil service life

Flexi-conservator
This is specially designed conservator, which allows breathing but dis-allow entry of air / moisture to conservator oil, thereby preventing
oxidation of oil. The life of transformer increases multi-time due to this. Flexi-conservator is installed in transformers starting from 100 KVA
to 50 MVA. It serves the same purpose as done by Air-cell conservators. Air-cells are not available for smaller rating transformers due to
economical reasons. Air cells have drawback of leakage or puncture. This is totally eliminated in Flexi-conservator. It is very effective and
economical system (less than half the cost of air-cell) and does not require any maintenance .Under shut-down conditions, the transformer
cools down but this system does not allow air / moisture entry to conservator. The Vacuum dried SEIL transformers with initial very low
content of moisture level in oil and Cellulose are extremely safe to operate and have a very long life, more after getting equipped with
above anti-ageing devices. Due to round the clock protection available against moisture, SEIL transformers maintain a high degree of
dryness, the key factor to extend life of transformers. I t is equally important to have dry Cellulose, not only dry oil.

techniques are applied to ensure the required electrical, mechanical and thermal stability against severe
fault conditions to withstand multiple times of the rated current which leads to mechanical forces in
windings. Windings are built up with sufficient insulations to withstand naturally occurring high voltage
surges. The magnetic circuit layout is made with sophisticated design technique to achieve optimum level of
constant losses at the moment of switching on power supply to the transformer.

Instrument Transformers

Epoxy Resin Cast Current and Voltage

Transformers
The dry type instrument transformers have been a great success specially in heavily polluted
surroundings. Epoxy cast instrument transformers are also available for outdoor application in special
type of resins known as cycloaliphatic resins.

Testing
Each Instrument transformer is subjected to all routine tests as per applicable standards and customer
specifications. The instrument transformers are frequently tested for type tests at approved laboratories
for design validation and fault withstand capability.

Note: Various Indoor and Outdoor models have been tested for fault level up to 31.5 KA for 3 - Sec.

The windings are designed to meet dynamic and thermal stresses. Coils are wound with electrolytic high
conductivity synthetic enamelled copper conductors. Coils are dried in
electric ovens. Rigid connection support and coil clamping are provided to
withstand high short circuit currents.

The complete core coils assembly is cast in resin, which has got high dielectric, mechanical and heat
dissipation qualities.

SKIPPER has successfully utilized the advantages of epoxy cast instrument transformers for outdoor
applications up to 66KV. In such cases no paper and oil insulation is required and hence no periodic oil
filtration or maintenance requirements. The specially designed instrument transformer are cast in epoxy and
put into hermetically sealed enclosures.

Manufacturing Range
Current and voltage transformers up to 33KV are made to suit both indoor and outdoor applications.
The indoor current and voltage transformers up to medium voltages are preferred in resin casting
over oil filled ones in terms of compactness, sturdiness and are Maintenance free. SKIPPER has
expertise and infrastructure to manufacture instrument transformers up to 33KV in indoor and 66KV
for outdoor applications.

CONSTRUCTION
The core is built up from non-ageing cold rolled grain oriented silicon steel laminations, coated with
heat resistant insulation. Laminations are annealed to reduce losses. Current transformer core is
made from continuous lamination wound as a toroid

9
Oil Filled Current Transformers

Oil Filled current transformers in high voltage applications are still the preferred ones due to cost advantages and
easy availability of the technology. They are available in live and dead tank versions depending on the customer’s
requirements. In measuring and protection applications they can be manufactured in single or multi-core as well as multi-
tap designs. Tap changing can also be on primary or secondary, however due to convenience of low current and low
voltage, secondary tap changing is now a days the preferred trend.

Construction

Secondary winding is made first over the toroid with thermal isolation. Insulation of the secondary winding is done in
accordance with high voltage requirements. Primary is finally wound over the insulated coil. Surface of the coil is made
uni-potential with special tapes. Number of such uni-potential layer depends upon the system voltage. Such layers will
relieve the coil from voltage stresses. Secondary leads are brought to the terminal box through the insulator. The
complete coil assembly is then placed in the tank and gently slipped inside the vacuum heating and drying ovens to
completely dehydrate the equipment and ensure long operating life.

All Current transformers have special identification number given right from stage one. This will enable us to trace the
fault up to root level in case of failures and thus implement the preventive action.

TESTING

Current transformers are tested in fully equipped testing lab for all routine
tests as per IS: 2705, I IEC185 or other relevant standard as specified by the
customer. The CTs are also tested from time to time in approved labs for
design validation.

Isolating Switches

SKIPPER has been manufacturing high voltage disconnecting switches since almost two decades .
The supply list includes various electricity boards, utilities, industrial units and public sector
undertakings. The company has been exporting the disconnecting switches to various countries for
more than eight years now.

CONSTRUCTION
Disconnecting switches are used for isolation of system under fault conditions or carrying out the
maintenance work without disturbing the main supply network. The disconnecting switches are
made as per relevant standards and the customer's specifications. They are made with and without
earth switches with mechanical / electrical interlocks, manually or motorized operated mechanism, having capacity to interrupt line charging
currents. The current carrying parts are made of electrolytic grade copper. The contacts are designed to provide discharge free supply. The
arcing horns ensure that main contacts remain safe during opening and closing operations thus giving a longer life to the switch. The metal
parts are surface treated for protection against rust. The switches are tested from approved labs for high short circuit currents.

APPLICATION
Depending upon the requirements, off load disconnecting switches are made in horizontal,
vertical, single break, double break, and center break models. Company also developed
disconnecting switches, single break spring assisted models up to 33KV aerial application in
both vertical and horizontal mounting. These switches have great operator’s comfort, load
making as well as load breaking capabilities. These switches are most preferred in rural and
urban electrification in Africa.

OPERATION
Down the years we have been working to better the switches in operation. Bearings and bushes were standardized to reduce the torque.
Most of the manually operated switches can be operated with less than 30 kg operating weight.

Expulsion Type Drop Out Fuses

Drop out fuses are used for fault protections in rural electrification, distribution
system, industrial units having medium voltage connections both as primary and
secondary back ups. The drop out fuse should operate before the connected
equipment i.e transformer gets damaged. Generally D.O. Fuses are used as
switching device along with protection and operated with the telescopic insulated
rods from the ground level.

The operation of drop out fuse is extremely violent. Once the fuse blows off, the
arc restrikes till it is quenched. Even few cycles are sufficient to damage the
current carrying parts and the barrel. Skipper over a period of time has
acquired expertise in the manufacturing of drop out fuses to withstand such
short circuit currents.

The SKIPPER drops out fuses are designed to accommodate button head
type fuse elements. The high pressure, electroplated copper alloy
components are used to provide better contacts and longer life.

SKIPPER manufactures various models as per IEC 282-2 or IS 9385-2 to

suit customer needs. Single insulator type, Bracket type & Universal type
models are available up to 33KV.
