Simmons College is challenging what leadership means.
Boston This semester, Simmons College has created a new curriculum for incoming freshman. The curriculum is
called Simmons PLAN (Purpose, Leadership, and Action) this new plan lets students customize their path
throughout their four years. It also lets them define what leadership means to them.
Catherine Paden, Director of PLAN said, “One of our main goals is to support students in fueling them, broadening,
and inspiring them for their own created track throughout their four years here at Simmons.”
This new curriculum reflects the Simmons tagline “Your Moment, Your Move, Your Simmons.” This new
curriculum allows students to feel a deeper connection to the school, and how much of an impact it can make.
This PLAN curriculum has four main goals:
1. Build wider recognition of Simmons
2. Enhance Simmons’s reputation
3. Increase student retention
4. Produce future leaders across disciplines
PLAN is a unique curriculum and none of Simmons’ competitors have such a Boston centered learning experience.
Simmons offers Boston themed classes which are mandatory for all freshmen in the fall semester. There are 25
Boston classes helping incoming students expand their knowledge about Boston while also exploring a topic they
are interested in. Some examples are: News@Boston, A Field Guide to Art in Boston, and Storytelling Through
Graphics: The Power of Art.
PLAN is not exclusive to freshmen, it also includes courses for Sophomores, Juniors and a capstone experiences for
Seniors to help them become leaders in their field. This new PLAN is transforming the way students learn all
through their four years at Simmons to better prepare them for the real world.
