Before you start

Special Layers
Magi_0 – a layer created by MagiCAD and used internally by the software, e.g. for so-called
“dragging” of objects etc. Magi_0 may not be locked, as this prevents certain functions from
working.

Magi_garbage – a layer used by MagiCAD, e.g. for temporary output, so-called “part property
lines”. Check that any Xrefs are not saved in this layer. If this happens, the Xref disappears
during sizing as MagiCAD purges this layer each time sizing occurs.

Defpoints – an AutoCAD layer that is not plotted, although it is visible during plotting.
Connected to AutoCAD’s zero (0) layer. Note: Used by MagiCAD’s active 2D.

1.2 Preparation
Create new main project folder where all the .dwg`s and MagiCAD`s project files will be saved.
In this example we have main project folder (MagiCAD_Training) which includes own folders
for architectural, ventilation, heating & piping and water/sewer drawings. Project files will be
saved to main folder (MagiCAD_Training)

1.3 Before starting the project

Before connecting to project, create a template, save the drawing and attach the correct
architectural drawing. If you don`t have any ready-made template it is recommended to use
the ones that comes with MagiCAD. They can be found at
C:\ProgramData\MagiCAD\Templates\MagiCAD HPV

After you have open a template, save the drawing to Ventilation folder with wanted name.

Then select the architectural drawing using e.g. Insert -> DWG reference function. It is
recommended to move the architectural drawing to a locked layer after it is installed to
drawing.

1.4 Connect to project

Select “Create new project”, allocate a name to the project and select the desired location of
the project files and the project template (*.epj), then click OK.

The project manager now opens, and is where project settings are managed, such as how
many storeys there are and how they are positioned in relation to one another. The data that
can be found here comes from the template selected when the project was created. As we will
not use Storey 3, this can be deleted under Storeys, by right clicking on the name Storey 3 and
selecting the Delete option.

Select the row you want to change, right click

to edit or copy the storey.

Press Active MagiCAD’s reference

MagiCAD’s floor level.

NOTE: Do not forget to show the direction of the coordinate system’s x-axis and to specify the
angle. You are now ready to start drawing.

Create Storey 2

Follow the steps 1.3 and 1.4. Then click on the Project button, select the existing project and
click on the Select button. Specify Install storey origin and Active storey as above.

2. Some basic functions when drawing ventilation

2.1 Design options

The first time you start drawing, the Design option dialogue appears on all drawings. This
dialogue is used to preinstall types of bends and forks and indicates how the so-called “Route
Wizard” should function.
Indicate type of “Routing” depending on the connection point
situation. Smart uses standard angles wherever possible.
Direct uses the direct route, regardless of angle. You can
toggle between Smart and Direct when drawing by right
clicking and selecting mode in the menu, or by using the T
and Enter key combination on the keyboard.
The bottom section can be

2.2 Duct and duct details

Start drawing the ducts from any starting point. Use any AutoCAD tracking/snap functions to
identify the start point.
Select the system for the
ducts that shall be drawn.

Copy settings from ducts that

have already been drawn
such as duct material, size
and insulation.
Also specify the height at
which you want to draw the
duct or copy the height
from an element that has
already been drawn.
Select whether the height
needs to be specified
relative to the floor or based
on the project’s zero point.

Always check the command line to see which options are available.
The command line: Specify the capital letter using the keyboard and then press Enter or
right-click and select from the menu that appears.

8. Functions and features when editing

8.1 Editing functions

As a rule, all AutoCAD’s functions can be used to copy, rotate, invert, cut and paste etc. In
individual cases, the function may be limited, in other cases, options may be expanded,
however, it is important to know that the software handles these situations. If an “unpermitted”
command is used, e.g. trim, the software will automatically switch off handling of the command.
Even more special functions have been developed, e.g. copying and deleting, in order to
facilitate situations where AutoCAD’s own functions are not effective.

Branch Copy – Copies branches.

Branch Erase – Deletes branches.
Part Erase – deletes selected components on
the z axis.
Move Parts – moves the pipe system on the x,
y or z axis.

Crossing allows you to change the height of a

duct between two points.
Joint part – is used to add sleeves or technical
break points, e.g. for delimiting isolation.

Side Movement – moves the duct system to

the side, eccentric cones.
Equalize Branch Directions – turns the front t-
pipes and forks in the same direction.
3D rotate allows you to rotate a component
that you have inserted in a duct.

Split allows you to “cut” a duct.

MagiCAD’s Change properties allow you to

change almost anything.

Find & Replace. changes e.g. dampers, user

codes, series, manufacturer, etc.

8.2 Change properties for the drawn objects, duct dimensions, duct series
etc.

Use these functions to go back and

edit what you have drawn.
For example, position insulation on
your pipes, change system in the
places you have forgotten to set the
correct system.

Remember that you have something called extended selection, look further down and check
the command line.

This is where, for example, you can change system without needing
to mark and click on each part that makes up the system. Type “Y”.
Everything included in the system is then selected. Note: Capital
letters carry out the required operation.

Exercise 8:

• Change duct diameters, insulate retrospectively, change colour line types.

• Try to move the duct system on the x, y and z axis.
• Remember the extended selection!

Use the copy, branch copy, move parts, stretch and test functions and ask!

9. Connection Nodes

9.1 Connect systems – on or between storeys

In order to connect the different duct systems between storeys, or if required within a plan, the
so-called “connection nodes”, flow connections, can be used. These flow connections then
transfer data for sizing, balancing and other calculations.

Draw ducts, create bends upwards

or downwards, right click and select
connection node. An exportable
flow connection is then created,
which is needed in order to export
the flow and pressure between your
different models.

Indicate the destination direction if you

want to create a flow connection upwards
or downwards.

Change direction.

Use Connect Node to tell the software which drawings you want to connect using the connection
nodes you have already created.

Indicate which system group(s) you want to

search for flow connections from.

Indicate whether you want to search in

all systems or in one specific system.

Indicate whether you want to search for

flow connections in a limited area, or
whether you want to search the entire
drawing regardless of plan dimensions.

Select the drawing you want to import

from. Click on OK!

This is where you can add model

files to the model file list, so that
these can then be selected for
searching flow connections from.

The flow connections that have been created for the plan below will now be displayed on your
drawing. Remember to draw a section of duct before bending it. This is to allow space for the
dimensions of your bend.

MagiCAD

44

9.2 Set the flow and pressure drop directly at the duct/pipe end
In some cases, it may be necessary to set the flow and pressure drop directly above the
duct/pipe end. This is done using the Connection node option and selecting None.

It is also possible to create connection nodes using the “This” option. This means that flow and
pressure in the duct end are exported to another duct end in the drawing. Then use the This
option under Destination Drawing to ensure that both ends that need connecting have a
connection node and that they have the same ID number.
This can be useful if several storeys are all shown in the same model.

12. Allow the software to help you – use sizing support

12.1 Calculations
When you initially built up your system you also decided all calculation conditions. Using these
inputs and the flow data the software can now perform a number of calculations.

Bill of Materials – removing groupings.

Can be used regardless of whether
sizing or balancing is carried out.

Flow summation – summarises the

flow from the furthest device to the
open end of the selected system.

Sizing – calculates the necessary

dimensions according to the selected
criteria, then sizes up or down and
redraws the ducts with the correct
dimensions, unless they are locked.

Balancing – calculates dimensioned

devices, then checks whether it is
possible to adjust to the required flow
with the selected products. If not, the
program will mark the components that
do not satisfy the specified criteria with
a cross. You can also select whether
you want to see the flow route to the
dimensioned devices here.

NOTE: Balancing of the required

system must be carried out before
noise and flow data can be calculated
for the relevant system!

Standard warnings and error messages during calculations:

Parts out of flowroute: The system is not linked to any options, so there are two or
more open ends. Mark with crosses, the object with the last cross or the object following
the last cross is the one with the error. Last cross means the cross furthest from the fan
in the flow direction.

System is not in Balance: the system is not in balance, which can be caused by
several factors. Dampers are missing from the design or the dampers that do exist do
not provide sufficient suppression.

Different flow on route pipes: Due to different flows in the supply and return pipes.
Common causes are that not all radiators are connected to both the supply and return
pipes, or that there is a pipe somewhere which is not connected to the system (an open
end where there should not be one).

Flow route error, e.g. closed duct or pipe system: Usually because the system lacks
an open end.

Flow outside of limits (XXX%): This message may be generated when balancing tap
water systems. It is a notification indicating that the start pressure supplied to the tap
water system will result in flow that is too high (if the percentage is over 100) or too low
(if it is below 100) relative to the water point’s specified normal flow. The limit values for
this information are entered in the system settings for the tap water system.

It can be beneficial to use *.dwt files to obtain prepared settings in relation to plot settings,
drawing frames, name boxes, lt scale etc.
Use a Drawing file (*.dwg) as a basis for your dwt file. When you are happy with your (*.dwg
file), i.e. the file used as a basis for the Drawing template file (*.dwt), resave as .dwt format.

Change from *.dwg to *.dwt format

here. A good tip is to save your
*.dwt files in the same folder.

Enter the search path to the folder in

which the *.dwt files are saved in the
Options dialogue under the files tab
and Drawing Template File Location.

Once this is done, the file in which the *.dwt files are saved will automatically open when you
select File New.

13.2 Set up projects with different heights

If different ceiling heights exist within the same storey, the model drawings should be
separated, i.e. a *.dwg drawing for each ceiling height; Connection nodes are used to bind e.g.
duct/pipe systems between these drawings. For everything to appear on one model, the
different v-models are “reffed” to a combined model.

In this example, we are adding a storey to our project. This storey will be divided across two
models with two different ceiling heights. Storey 3 has two different ceiling heights, 4 m and 6
m.

Begin by creating a model, giving it a name, Storey 3 - left, connecting “Xref” and connecting
to a project.
Add two drawing areas to the project, one for each ceiling height.
Note that the x-coordinate for storey origin is added in different places for each drawing area.

Select Storey 3 – left as the active storey.

Use Save As to add the next drawing, i.e. the drawing for Storey 3 - right, call it
Storey 3 - right.

Check that the setting point for storey origin Ensure you switch to the
is positioned in the correct location. correct active storey.

Since there is a difference in ceiling height on storey 3, the duct system is shown in different
files due to the difference in height. Use the connection nodes to link ducts/pipes between the
drawings.

The connection nodes used to link the

system with different ceiling heights on
the same plan are these four.

13.3 Set up projects with different shapes

You can also lay out your drawing area the way you like, e.g. copy it from an A drawing or
import the shape from MagiCAD Room. Do this by right-clicking on the storey that you want to
change and then selecting Edit, or right-click the field and select Import.

for your drawing area. This function
makes the area rectangular.

14. Project settings

14.1 Layers, line types and colours

In the project you created your project data is defined as a layer structure, colour settings, line
types and so on. The template you selected provides the basis for your project. We will now
look at how the project settings are handled and how they affect what you draw.

You will see a tree structure in the left-hand panel. This

includes the common items and anything that is discipline-
specific, e.g. for Ventilation (Ducts). Select the required item
and its settings will be displayed in the right-hand panel, then
right click on the required setting to edit and select the option
depending on what you want to do. Double click on a setting
to go directly to the editing mode.

Here, you select the object group you want to

change. Double click to edit.

The settings can be made separately for 1D, 2D

and 3D. Click on the respective tab.

Here you can see and edit the

layer name for the object.

Select the required line type and

colour for the central line, boundaries
and details, where applicable.

If you want to use colours Bylayer

instead of By system, you first need
to define the separate layers, line
type and colour for the different parts
making up an object.

Tick Use multiple layers for

object as above, and click
Default layer settings. In the
dialogue that opens, enter the
layer name for the different
parts making up an object.

Under Linetypes, indicate line type and colour for hidden lines/details, enter the height
of the drawing section and line type for the relevant height.

Text settings such as “Style name” determining which text style should be used, and
the text height should be entered here. Note that the “font” selected in AutoCAD’s
“Text style” command determines the appearance of the text.

14.5 Settings for automatic void provisions

There are separate “free measurement” settings for making rectangular (h1) and circular(h2)
voids. The minimum distance between voids can also be defined (h3). If the voids are any
closer together they will be combined. You can also define that circular voids from a certain
diameter should become rectangular voids (maximum diameter for circular void). It is possible
to define a lower limit for void sizes so that voids are not created that are too small (minimum
equivalent diameter for void).

Indicate the rounding

value for void
provisions.

When you create void provision drawings, the void

can be “tagged” with the discipline to which it
belongs. Ventilation, pipe, sewer, sprinkler,
electricity or free text using the Note field.

If you want to separate void provisions on different layers, you can use the layer-variable VV,
which indicates an Owner value for the void. Voids that are dependent on ducts will appear on
one layer, and voids for pipes on another layer.

Dimension text for making voids can be added in the same way as other text,
i.e. manually or automatically.

15.4 Show selected objects

In order to facilitate 3D work in difficult moments, you can chose to work solely with specific,
selected objects – and then observe the object, for example, from the side using AutoCAD’s
view command and make any changes from there.

Select to only show selected objects – select the objects with which you
want to work. Other Installations will disappear temporarily until they are reinstated using

Tip! Disconnect the Xrefs temporarily using the “unload” command in the “external reference
dialogue”. Reinstate the references with the “reload” command in the same dialogue.

15.5 Explode MagiCAD objects

In order to explode your MagiCAD objects, enter magiexp in the command line. The MagiCAD
objects will then be transformed into an AutoCAD block. In order to transform the block to lines,
run AutoCAD explode.

Note! make a copy of drawings before running the magiexp command. This is because the
intelligence in the objects disappears permanently, or rather, it is not possible to recreate the
intelligence once you have run the magiexp command.

15.6 Simplify the drawing in a specific place in your model

The drawing is sometimes very full of installations. It is therefore also difficult to differentiate
what is what, particularly if you are drawing in side view.

This is why Side View exists. You can use this to cut out and rotate using only
one command. This function also cuts any A drawings in 3D.

Press Side View Select the areas in which you want to apply special draw,
indicate the direction for viewing your model.

In order to reset, use End Side View

15.7 Change colour in the A drawing

Drawing Cleaning Utility exists to allow easy handling of the A model. This lets you change
colour on all or parts of your A model. You can run Purge and Audit. Change text styles and
scale line types, objects and Xrefs.

16. Project cooperation

16.1 Settings for cooperation

The software uses certain AutoCAD settings and files in a specific way, which is good to
recognise. Check the following under the relevant profile with the recipient of your drawing
files, under the “Open and Save” tab in the option dialogue.

Settings for how

ARX applications
need to be loaded.

How so-called proxy objects need to be displayed if the application is not loaded/present.
If you want to switch proxy graphics on and off in AutoCAD LT, type proxyshow in the
command line, value “1” for on and “0” for off. In order to save the proxy graphics so that
they can be displayed on a workstation without the application present, the proxygraphics
variable should be at 1 in your DIN drawing.

19. Some final advice

19.1 Remember:
If you are adding components to the “wrong” system, you can change system using the
change properties – system, under the relevant properties group.

Text can be rescaled using change properties – Dimtext – scale dimtext height.

If you think that the search range is too large or too small, you can set the extent of the range
yourself. Normal value = 20.
