INTRODUCTION:

The measurement of dissolved oxygen is important for the

following:

1. Basis for BOD test.

2. Treatment (aerobic and anaerobic).
3. Corrosion control.
4. Fish life.

Factors affecting the concentration of D.O:

1. Temperature: as temperature increase the D.O concentration
decrease.
2. Altitude: as altitude increase (pressure decrease) the D.O
concentration decrease.
3. Salinity: as salinity increase the D.O concentration decrease.
4. Degree of pollution: as degree of pollution increase the D.O
concentration decrease.

Procedure:

1. A sample of tap water is added to a BOD

bottle, we should add the sample
carefully so as to not to alter the
dissolved oxygen.
2. 1 mL of Manganese Sulfate MnSO4 is
added to the sample carefully and under
the surface.
3. 1 mL of Alkali – Iodide – Azide is added
to the sample carefully and under the
surface.
4. The bottle is closed well (there must be
no air bubbles), and shake for many times
to allow the precipitate to be formed
(Brown precipitate).
5. Settling for at least 5 minutes is required,
then we re – shake the bottle for several
times again, then we allow settling for
second time.

6. 1 mL of sulfuric acid is added, the H2SO4

used here is a pure acid so it's highly
concentrated, thus very dangerous.
7. The bottle is shaked well again, and we
shall notice the color change to yellow
with all precipitate disappeared.
8. A 100 mL of this sample is taken for
titration.
9. Starch is added as an indicator, color
changes to dark blue is noticed.
10. Titration start with adding Sodium
Thiosulphate (Na2S2O3.5(H2O)) with
0.0125 N as titrant, titration proceed tell
reaching a colorless solution.
11. The volume of titrant used in mL is the
equal to D.O concentration in mg/L.
12. These steps (1 – 10) are repeated for a
tap water @ 50 C.

Formulas :
During the reactions is :
Mn+2 + 2OH- →Mn(OH)2↓ ----- No oxygen
With oxygen :
Mn+2 + OH- + O2 → MnO2 ↓ + H2O
MnO2 + I- + H+ → I2 + H2O +Mn
I2 is to be titrated ( I2 is red but with water is yallow )
S2O3-3 + I2 → S4O6-2 +2I-

The benefit of using azide is to get rid from the

interference while come from NO2-
Nitrication:
O.M + O2 → CO2 + H2O + NH3
NH3 + O2 → NO2
O2 + NO2 → NO3
NO2- +I- + H+ → I2 + N2O2
N2O2 + O2 + H2O → NO2- +H+
The solution:
Azide ( NaN3) + H+ → HN3 + Na +
HN3 + NO2- + H+ → N2 + N2O + H2O

Calculations:

1. Tap water sample:

Vol. of titrant = 6.8 ml → concentration of D.O = 6.8 mg/L as

O2.

2. Tap water sample @ 50 C:

Vol. of titrant = 6 ml → concentration of D.O = 6 mg/L as O2.

.

Conclusion:

As expected the concentration of dissolved oxygen D.O decreases

with the temperature increase.
If after the addition of MnSO4 a white precipitate is seen, this
means that the sample contains no D.O.
The addition of chemical compounds must as ordered in the
procedure without any change.
Each chemical compound must be added with a different burette.
Any change in the normality of titrant will change the calculations,
that is if the normality is doubled then each 1 mL of titrant means a 2
mg/L of D.O.
The method of titration (Mohr) for finding D.O depends on having
I2 concentration equal to the D.O concentration, then finding I2
concentration by titration, and that’s why we add that chemicals.
MnSO4 is added to check the existence of D.O.
Alkali is added to do an Oxygen fixation process.

Iodide and acid are added to produce I2 with the same

concentration of D.O.
Azide is added to get rid of any NO2 that may exist in the sample,
since NO2 produce I2 and so it will yield to a wrong calculation of D.O.
