Assignment No. 1
1.1 The four-bar linkage of shown in Figure 1.1 below has crank 2 driven by an input torque M12. An
external load P = 240 N acts at point O on the link 4. Find the required input torque to hold the
mechanism in this position in equilibrium.

Given O2A= 50 mm, AB = 60 and O4B= 70 mm

1.2 Define Virtual work method and solve problem no. 1.1 by virtual work method.

Assignment No. 2 Answer any ONE question from following:

Topic: Governors

1. A governor of Hartnell type has equal balls of mass 3kg, set initially at a radius of 200 mm.
The arms of the bell crank lever are 110mm vertically and 150 mm horizontally. Find:
i) The initial compressive force on the spring at a radius of 200 mm at 240rpm and
ii) The stiffness of the spring required to permit a sleeve movement of 4mm on a
fluctuation of 7.5 percent in the engine speed

2. All the arms of a Porter governor are 178 mm long and are hinged at a distance of 38 mm
from the axis of rotation. The mass of each ball is 1.15 kg and mass of the sleeve is 20 kg. The
governor sleeve begins to rise at 280 r.p.m. when the links are at an angle of 30° to the
vertical. Assuming the friction force to be constant, determine the minimum and maximum
speed of rotation when the inclination of the arms to the vertical is 45°.

Assignment No. 3 Answer all questions

Topic: Balancing of rotating masses

2.1 Four masses A, B, C and D revolve at equal radii and are equally spaced along a shaft. The mass
B is 7 kg and the radii of C and D make angles of 90° and 240° respectively with the radius of B.
Find the magnitude of the masses A, C and D and the angular position of A so that the system
may be completely balanced.[Ans. 5 kg ; 6 kg ; 4.67 kg ; 205° from mass B in anticlockwise
direction]
2.2 A, B, C and D are four masses carried by a rotating shaft at radii 100 mm, 150 mm, 150 mm and
200 mm respectively. The planes in which the masses rotate are spaced at 500 mm apart and the
magnitude of the masses B, C and D are 9 kg, 5 kg and 4 kg respectively. Find the required mass
A and the relative angular settings of the four masses so that the shaft shall be in complete
balance. [Ans. 10 kg ; Between B and A 165°, Between B and C 295°, Between B and D 145°]

Assignment No. 4 Answer all the following questions:

Topic: Dynamic force analysis.

1. Differentiate static force analysis and dynamic force analysis.

2. Define Inertia.
3. State D’Alembert’s principle.
4. What do you mean by equivalent offset inertia force?
5. Define Inertia force.
6. Define Inertia torque.
7. The connecting rod of an IC engine is 450 mm long and has a mass of 2 kg. The center of the
mass of the rod is 300 mm from the small end and its radius of gyration about an axis through
this center is 175 mm. The mass of the piston and the gudgeon pin is 2.5 kg and the stroke is
300 mm. The cylinder diameter is 115 mm. Determine the magnitude and direction of the
torque applied on the crankshaft when the crank is at 40 degree and the piston is moving away
2
from the inner-dead center under an effective gas pressure of 2 N/mm . The engine speed is
1000 rpm.
