    This document describes the origin, insertion, innervation, and action of several muscles of the gluteal region and thigh. The gluteus medius and minimus originate on the ilium and insert on the greater trochanter of the femur, abducting and medially rotating the thigh to shift weight during walking. The gemelli and obturator internus and externus muscles laterally rotate the extended thigh and abduct the flexed thigh, originating on the pelvis and inserting on the greater trochanter. The piriformis laterally rotates the extended thigh and abducts the flexed thigh, originating on the sacrum.
