The College of Virginia Tech

The history of Virginia Tech is very unique. The College of Virginia Tech was

established on October 1st, 1872 by Addison Caldwell. Addison Caldwell, also known as “add”,

walked 26 miles from Craig County to enroll as the first student at Virginia Agricultural and

Mechanical College. The tiny college, originally housed in the old Olin and Preston Institute near

what is now Alumni Mall, has grown into a world-class university. Since the start, the college

has been fulfilling the role of a leading land-grant university.

Virginia Tech in a basic view is the chance to create the technological future. At Virginia

Tech, the focus is to reimagine how education and technology intersects. By using this approach,

it transforms the ways in which everyone learns, performs research’s, and engages with the

communities across the world. Here they push the boundaries of knowledge so that they can

make a difference in the world. The members of the Hokie Nation have a clear vision of how

they can serve in their personal, professional, and civic pursuits. Together, the college are a force

for positive change, driven by their motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

In order to apply to Virginia Tech, you should consider the following information. The

average GPA of the recently accepted class was 3.95. The average acceptance rate for women is

75% while the average acceptance rate for men is 68%, this leaves a total average of 71%

acceptance rate. Of the women who were accepted, only 35% actually enrolled, and for men only

about 32% were admitted. This gives an overall enrolled rate at only 33% of those accepted to

the school. Your scores from the Sat, High School GPA, and Completion of College Preparatory

Program are required in your application. The average SAT score for the reading section is 630,

the math section is 645, and overall the average SAT score is 1275. For early decision/early

action opportunities…

The academics that Virginia Tech are most well known for are Engineering, Business,

Management, Marketing, Related Support Services, Family and Consumer Sciences/Human

Sciences, Social Sciences, and Biological and Biomedical Sciences. Of these majors, Virginia

Tech is best known for their Engineering courses.

There are many social activities nearby the Virginia Tech campus. There are outdoor

activities, museums, arts, area specific events, and Sports and other activities. Some of the art

activities involve, music, theatre, summer festivals, and Galleries. For sports there are the Salem

Red Sox, BreakZone, NRV SuperBowl, Cox’s Golf Driving Range, Putt-Putt, and Batting Cages,

Motor Mile Speedway, Blacksburg Farmers Market and Franks Theatres Cinebowl & Grille.

When it comes to financial aid and scholarships, you don’t have the largest selection to

choose from. For undergraduate students, they may be eligible to receive financial aid through

Federal Direct Student Loans, Federal and/or State Grants, Scholarships. A few alternative

options such as Parent PLUS and alternative/private student loans. In order to apply for financial

aid, you should complete a FAFSA. The 2019-2020 FAFSA opens on October 1st with the

priority deadline being on March 1, 2019.

The Virginia Tech career services main purpose is to empower students to pursue a path

for a fulfilling career that is more than simply just helping to earn a degree. At Virginia Tech, the

career and professional development advisors help students explore the potential careers and

majors, help to land an internship, and help tailor résumés for their future. It does not matter
Langebeck9

what major or academic level you are, they still aim to help students explore career options and

seek real-world experiences. They also help secure post-graduation employment, and plan for

graduate or professional school. In fact, by the time graduation rolls around, 93 percent of the

graduates have had a career-related experience, such as paid internships, part-time and full-time

jobs, or research experience.

Like there are some off campus activities, there are also some on campus activities. There

are common spaces to study and have social gatherings, community kitchens, and outdoor

amenities. These outdoor amenities are such as volleyball courts provide fun and creative places

to see old friend as well as make new ones. The students are encouraged to build the community

by using their passions with people who have similar passions. This helps learning happen both

inside and outside the classroom for co-curricular engagement which is critical to a students

experience and success. Some clubs are the GobblerConnect, Gobblerfest, and the VT Engage.

The GobblerConnect is the place to start your search to find where you’ll thrive. The Gobblerfest

kicks off each fall semester with a wide array of campus activities and opportunities to engage

the surrounding community. The VT Engage is the service learning and civic engagement center.

The motto at Virginia Tech is the “UT Prosim (That I May Serve) which is the foundation of the

university. It means something unique to each person, and the VT Engage works to connect

students, faculty and communities together by allowing individuals to put the motto into action.

Almost 20 percent of the undergraduate population participates in at least one of the 55 chapter

fraternities and sorority life communities. Another great way for the community to connect is

through sports, there are a variety of options in the Recreational Sports Department to sign up for

the student ticket lottery.

As a freshman, you are guaranteed university housing and are required to live in the

residence with very few exceptions. There are 47 on-campus residence halls which house about

9,300 students that are kept safe, clean, and well-maintained. All residence halls have laundry

rooms that have Laundry Web which can reserve a washer or dryer that the resident may want to

use, it can also tell you how many machines are in use, or even send a text when your laundry is

done. There are also 15 living-learning communities, each which weaves together what you

study, where you live, and who you live with. This provides a unique experience that challenges

traditional expectations of campus life.

There are three meal plans available for students on-campus. There is the major flex plan,

mega flex plan and the premium flex plan. The major flex plan, the smallest meal plan, includes

about 10 meals per week. Meanwhile, the mega flex plan contains about 12 meals per week and

the premium flex plan, the largest, includes about 14 meals per week.
