1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to provide guidelines and sequential steps for
Lagging/Insulation of thermal piping system.
2.0 SCOPE
This lagging procedure shall be carried out to prevent heat loss on thermal piping system.
3.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS AND DEFINITION
REFERENCE
TENDER SPECIFICATION BHEL : PSSR : SCT : 1206 Guidelines for insulation works
DEFINITION
To prepare for installation: Ensure that pressure testing of piping and fittings has been completed
prior to installing insulation. Ensure that all pipe and fitting surfaces over which insulation is to be
installed are clean and dry. Ensure that insulation is clean, dry, and in good mechanical condition.
Wet, dirty, or damaged insulation is not acceptable for installation. Determine pipe size, pipe
length, and number of layers of Rockwool required for the application.
5.0 CHECKLIST

After completion of the erection, welding & NDT, the following points shall be checked
before commencement of lagging/insulation:
STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS:
a) ROCK wool : These materials should be stored under fully covered sheds. Stocking must be done
over planks and must be out of contact with ground. Height of stacking should not exceed 3
Meters. Once drenched in water these materials lose all the desired properties and become
unsuitable for use. Drying the material does not restore the desired properties.
b) Outer casing sheets: Outer surfaces are meant for improving the appearances also scratch
marks, dents, etc., spoil the appearance.
This area will be used for the cutting of Rock wool and Aluminium sheets materials from the full
rolls into lengths required for the application as well as any preformed parts required to ease the
installation process. This area should be setup in a covered and protected area. This area should

contain several tables or flat surfaces to accommodate the roll width and cutting length required
for each component being worked. The roll of Rockwool material should be situated at the front
of the table or flat surface where it can be dispensed from the crate or placed on a rack. Once
parts are cut in this area, it is suggested that they be placed on pallets and covered, bagged, or
wrapped in plastic before being placed at the work area.
7.0 PROCEDURE
1. Cut rockwool to length required for a complete wrap. Cut length may be achieved by wrapping
a piece around the pipe.
2. Place on pipe and wrap around the circumference of the pipe. Starting edge of Rockwool can
be handheld in place while wrapped.
3. Once wrapped around the pipe, the Rockwool may be held in place using tape, wire, or banding.
Prefabrication of insulation cladding may be done offsite and deliver to site to ensure speedy
completion of work
Pipe Fittings
Pipe Ends
Install Rockwool and Aluminium past the pipe end to the same distance as required for the
thickness of the insulation. Cut plugs from the Rockwool to the diameter of the opening and install
to match the thickness.
Reducers
Install rockwool sheets to the same thickness as would be required for the piping using the same
layout pattern as would be required for the metal cladding less the required overlaps. Install each
layer in a staggered fashion.

Tees
Install rockwool using the same techniques as would be used for installing the cladding.
Piping Shoes
Install rockwool around pipe adjacent to the pipe shoe and make a slit the length of the shoe.
Slide rockwool through the shoe area and continue wrapping the rockwool on the other end of the
shoe area. For some shoe types that have a welded section through the centre, it may be required
to apply the rockwool from both ends.
1. Insulate the pipe as far as the flange, then determine the diameters of the rockwool-insulated
pipe and the flange.
2. Wrap strip of rockwool over insulated pipe portion to achieve the same diameter as the flange
cut to the same size of the bonnet end if insulation is required on the bonnet section.
3. Measure the height between the two outer faces of the rockwool wraps.
4. Transfer height and circumference of the rockwool sheet and mark the cutouts for the bonnet
neck. Move the cut-out on each wrap of rockwool to achieve stagger, and slide over handle
section to achieve stagger.
5. The rockwool sheet is now wrapped around the valve body followed by any additional layers
with joints staggered. Attachment of the rockwool may be done with tape, banding, or wire.

9.0 INSPECTION
Clients will be invited to check quality of work and accept work done within 48 hours of
completion. Thickness of insulation is a minimum of 50mm
10.0 RECORDS
Records shall be prepared in standard / approved format and submitted to the Project
Manager/Engineer-In-Charge for approval.
11.0 SAFETY
All safety precautions shall be taken during fabrication and installation of insulation
materials. Lagging materials are engineered with safety and performance as our priorities. For
worker comfort when working with rockwool and aluminium clads, we recommend dust masks
and work gloves to reduce irritation and accidental cuts.
