Assignment #6

1. For a flow of a fluid perpendicular (normal) to a cylinder, the average heat

transfer coefficient (averaged around the periphery of the cylinder) can be
obtained from the following dimensionless correlation:
Nuavg = 0.43 + 0532 Re0.5 Pr0.31
1≤ Re ≤ 4,000

where Nuavg and Re are calculated using the cylinder diameter as the characteristic
geometrical parameter, and the fluid properties are evaluated at the average
conditions of the stagnant fluid film surrounding the solid (average temperature
and average concentration). Estimate the rate of sublimation in kg/s of a cylinder
made of UF6 (molecular weight = 352), 1.0 cm diameter and 10.0 cm long
exposed to an airstream that flows normal to the cylinder axis at a velocity of 1.0
m/s. The surface temperature of the solid is 30 oC, at which temperature the vapor
pressure of UF6 (A) is 27 kPa. The bulk of the air (B) is at 101.33 kPa and 52 oC .
Additional information to use (at the average temperature for this case): DAB =
9.04*10-6 m2/s and viscosity of the gas mixture is 2.29*10-5 Pa s or kg/(m s).
Draw a schematic diagram for this question.

2. A spill of gasoline occurs such that that a pool 0.6 m in length and 0.5 m in width
is formed in an area that has a ventilation rate of 85 m3/min. If the air velocity is 2
m/s, what is the concentration of gasoline in the enclosed area? Use a diffusivity
of gasoline in air of 1x10-5 m2/s at 25 o and atmospheric pressure. The vapor
pressure of gasoline (MW=94) at 25 oC is 31.7 kPa. If the threshold limit value
(TLV) for gasoline is 300 ppmv, does the concentration of this spill exceed TLV?

3. a) A 0.04 m-diameter naphthalene sphere is placed in an air duct, where it

undergoes sublimation into a 25 oC air stream (at atmospheric pressure) that flows
at 0.6 m/s. Calculate the mass transfer coefficient. Use Dn-air= 5.85x10-6 m2/s at
these conditions.
b) Do the same calculation for a packed bed of naphthalene spheres for the same
conditions as in (a). Use bed porosity of 40%.

4. Air at 300 K and 1 atm is blown at high speed parallel to the surface of a
rectangular shallow pan that contains liquid acetone (C3H6O). The pan is 1 m long
and 60 cm wide. It is connected to a reservoir containing liquid acetone which
automatically replaces the acetone evaporated, maintaining the constant liquid
level in the pan. During an experimental run, it was observed that 2.5 L of acetone
was evaporated in 6 minutes. Calculate the mass transfer coefficient ky in kmol/
(m2 s). The density of liquid acetone at 300 K is 0.79 g/cm3; its vapor pressure is
27 kPa
