DOLE intensifies LEGS to help future workers understand their roles and responsibilities
Labor and Employment Secretray Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz yesterday ordered the intensification of the Labor
Education for Graduating Students (LEGS) seminar program in different colleges and universities nationwide to
prepare future workers on work ethics, the culture of productive and decent work, and other dynamics in the
workplace.
The LEGS seminar program is designed to guide “would-be workers” on their rights at work and responsibilities. It is
aimed at enlightening students on how to apply for work, locally or overseas.
“Students who participate in the DOLE’s LEGS seminars will understand their roles and responsibilities in applying for
work, the industry they wished to work for, and the profession they would pursue,” said Baldoz.
As of February this year, 58,734 students from 291 schools have benefitted from the 354 LEGS seminars that the
DOLE Regional Offices have conducted nationwide. In 2012, a total of 234,024 students from 1,356 schools have
attended and benefitted from the 1,466 LEGS. DOLE Regional offices conducted in coordination with the Public
Employment Service Offices (PESOs) of local government units in the country.
Meanwhile, DOLE-NCR Regional Director Allan Macaraya said about 2,000 students from various schools in
Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela have attended the LEGS seminar conducted by the DIOLE-NCR
CAMANAVA field office recently.
The LEGS, which were conducted in coordination with the PESOs in said areas and the Philippine Overseas
Employment Administration (POEA) were held at the Navotas Polytechnic University, University of the East-
Caloocan, Manila Central University, Asian Caregiving and Technology Education Center (ACTEC), City of Malabon
University, World Citi Colleges and University of Caloocan City.
During the seminars, PESO managers gave tips on applying for work. They also explained the various employment
programs being offered by concerned local government. The POEA, through its Pre-Employment Orientation Seminar
(PEOS) program, taught to the students the steps in applying for jobs overseas and explained the reasons why
Filipinos aspire to work abroad. It also provided information on how to avoid being victimized by illegal recruiters.
DOLE-CAMANAVA representatives Teddy B. Bayron and Katrina P. Laurente discussed workers’ benefits under
Book 3 of the Labor Code. The topic encompasses the rights of workers, such as the appropriate minimum wages
per region and sector, computation of holiday and premium pay, prescribed hours of work, and monetary benefit.
