Sabbath Ritual - Secret of Chaja (Secret of Life)

Jalkut Chadash - Section: Shabbath, Fol 165, Col. 3.

"The Soul hath Five distinct Parts and Names. These are Nephesh (that is, the Soul): the Ruach (that is,
the Spirit): the Neshama (that is, the Superior or more Coelestial Soul): Chaja (the Living, or Life): and
Jechida (the Solitary, or Retir'd). These are receiv'd of Man at the following Seasons. In the Work Days
between, the Feast and the Increase of the Moon, cometh to him the Nephesh (the Soul): On the Feast-
Day cometh to him the Ruach (the Spirit): On the Day of Attonement, the Neshama (Coelestial Soul):
And on the Sabbath, the supernumerary Soul; which is the Mystery of Chaja (Life). And in the Life to
come he is made worthy to receive Jechida (rest)." See notes on Transmigration of Souls for
clarification on how Jechida (Rest) is achieved.

Rabbi Menachem von Rekanet:

"Our Rabbins of Blessed Memory, have said, that Man, on Sabbath, hath an additional Soul."

Jalkut Chadash - Section: Shabbath, Fol 144, Col. 1.

"The Mystery of Voluptuousness on the Sabbath is, the End she may utter a mighty Prayer (or
Thanksgiving) in Honour of the Divine Majesty, among the Lower; that is; among Men that dwell upon
the Earth; when they say Grace at Meals; which is a Duty not enjoyed among the Upper, or those that
dwell in Heaven."

Rabbi Salomon Jarchi:

"The Supernumerary Soul carries out the Mind of Man to Eating and Drinking, and makes him eat and
drink with Appetite and Pleasure."

Jalkut Chadash - Section: Shabbath, Fol 165, Col. 2.

"Concerning the Supernumerary Souls, which come on the Sabbath, they are derived of either from the
Part of Abel, or from the Part of Cain."

____________
The Number Of Souls
Nishmath Adam: Fol. 6, Col. 1

"The Soul of the First Man consisted of Six Hundred Thousand Souls, twisted together like so many
Threads. Which (Number) is the Sum of the Sciences, and of the Persons which may enter into (or make
up) the Body of the Israelites"

Rabbi Elias - Reshith chochma, Section Shaar haava

There are of the Israelites Six Hundred Thousand Souls: And of these Six Hundred Thousand Souls there
is never one Man wanting; which sheweth, that they are a Model of the Upper Chariot; in which are to
be found Six Hundred Thousand Sciences; as is well known to such as are acquainted with those Siences
(sic). I have likewise heard among Astrologers, that the Number of the Stars is Six Hundred Thousand."

Transmigration of Souls (Reincarnation) - Gilgulim

Jalkut Chadash - Section Jacob: Fol. 95, Col. 1

"When the First Man was created, there was given him a glorious Soul. But when he had sinned, she fled
away from him; and there came into him a Soul of the Kelifoth (ie: a Devil). And when Enoch was born,
the same glorious Soul , which fled away from Adam, came into him. Wherefore it was decreed on Adam,
that he should die: But the same was not decreed on Enoch, because he had this glorious Soul."

Rabbi Isaac Lurja - Sepher hacawanoth: Fol 55, Col. 2

"The Mystery of the Removal of Souls out of one Body into another, consisteth in this: The Souls of Men
alone, on Account of their Sins, revolve into other Bodies; the Souls of Women never, on Account of
their Sins, passing into other Bodies; but rather, receive their Punishment in Hell. And if it sometimes
happeneth, that the Soul of a Woman passeth into another Body, it cometh not to pass on any Account
of her own, but on Account of the Sins of her Husband. If the Husband is to be one of them concerning
whom it is said, (Exod. 21, 3) 'Then his Wife shall go out with him', his Soul must necessarily
transmigrate into another Body."

-
Avodath hakkodesh - Section: Cheleck haavoda: Fol. 45, Col. 1

"There are Sins for which the Soul which committeth them, justly transmigrates Inwards; that is, into an
Israelite: And there are Sins for which the Soul that committeth them, is justly remov'd Outwards; that is,
into a Gentile of the World."

Jalkut Rubeni - Section Gilgulim: N. 9

"Know, that the Principal Part or the Neshama (Coelestial Soul) of Cain passed into Jethro; his Ruach
(Spirit) into Korah; and his Nephesh (Soul) into the Egyptian who was slain by Moses (Exodus. Ch. 3, V12-
14). And this is what the Scripture (Genesis Ch 4, V 24) saith, 'If Sevenfold, ---- Iykkam Kain, --- Cain
shall be avenged, etc..' The Letters in the Word Iykkam, namely Jod, Koph, and Mem, are the Initial
Letters of the Names Jethro, Korah, and Mizri (the Egyptian)." ***They (the group of men transcribing
Eisemenger's work from German) ask the reader to note that such a notion could only be made by
way of "Cabalistic Discovery".

Rabbi Menasse ben Israel - Nishmath Chajim: Fol. 168, Col. 1

"The Second Repudiation, or Casting off of the Soul, is for Those who have, indeed, believ'd in God and
his Servant Moses, but, nevertheless, have done Evil, and committed heinous Sins, after the
Abominations of the Heathens (Gentiles); in Forbidden Concubinage; in Committing Adultery with their
Neighbors Wives; in the Knowing of Women contrary to the Law. Now, because they engaged in such
Brutish Work, and took Wives after their own Lust or Choice without Control, as well from among Those
that were forbidden as Those that were allow'd; behold, God, who is a God of Truth, and doeth no
Wrong, punish them by Letting them pass into the Bodies of Brutes; sometimes into clean Cattle, and
sometimes into Unclean; or into wild Beasts or Fowls, according to the Degree of their Sins; for which
they are there judg'd and of the Lord, and depriv'd of their Natural Body, and made to go like a Horse or
Ass, on Four Feet, and without Understanding."

Avodath hakkodesh: Fol. 49, Col. 3

"We learn, through Tradition or the Oral Accounts, that our Instructor Moses, on whom be Peace, did,
through the Words of the Law, (Numbers 16, 22) 'O God, the God of the Spirits of all Flesh', denote that
Souls passed into all Manner of Flesh; as well into that of Animals and Insects, as that of Human Bodies:
And that the Words of all Flesh, signify as much as the Words, In all Flesh."

Shechechath leket: Bethhammikdash: N. 20 - Contradicts the comment above

"The Words run thus: "No Wild Beast is sacrifis'd, because the Soul of Man never enters into Wild Beasts;
and therefore it is allow'd to eat their Fat."

Rabbi Menasse ben Israel - Nishmath Chajim: Fol. 160, Col. 1-2

"It is also necessary for Thee to know, that the Cabalists in like Manner, believe, that Souls are remov'd
out of Bodies of one Kind in the Creation into Bodies of another Kind. And they say, therefore, that the
Soul of him who transgresseth the Commandment by an Attempt to anger another, and who doth not
repent, passeth into a Beast. And our Sages, of Blessed Memory, explain the Words, (Gen 11. 8) 'So the
Lord scatter'd them abroad from thence upon the Face of the Earth' by saying, that that Generation of
Confusion, that is, Those who engag'd in the Building of the Tower of Babel, were punished by Three
Judgments. The Good among them were punished with Confusion of Tongues. Those who aim'd at the
setting up of Idolatry, were transformed into Cats, Monkeys, and the Like. And the Third Party which
consisted of Those who said, we will climb up to Heaven, and slay him (namely, God) with Axes, was
hurl'd down, and transform'd into Devils and other Evil Spirits. By this, their Intent was to let us
understand that the Souls of some of those (Builders of Babel) enter'd into such Animals and Souls of
other of them were changed into Devils, and other Evil Spirits; which are in incessant and restless
Motion. And upon that Memory, in the Parasha Noah, and in the Parasha Shemini, of his Exposition on
the Five Books of Moses, hath thus written. There are among the Modern Cabalists, Some who believe,
that the Souls of Men transmigrate into Cattle; and who say, that the Soul of Man passeth into a Beast, if
he hath committed one Sin more than he hath done Good Works. And this is signified under the Words,
(Levit. 11, 26) 'Nor cheweth the Cud, are unclean unto You' by which is meant, that the Soul of him who
ruminates on his Merit or Good Works, passeth, when he ruminates, into an clean Animal. But if he hath
committed Adultery, or had Knowledge of Women that are forbidden, or been guilty of shedding of
Blood, his Soul, for any one of these Offences, passeth, notwithstanding he doth ruminate (unless he
ruminates on his good deeds), into an unclean Animal, if he hath not repented. And this is the Mystery
of the Rabbit, the Camel, and the Hog, etc.. (regarding Deut. 14, 7-8). And the said Rabbi Menachem von
Rakenet, of Blessed Memory, in the Parasha Kedoshim, says, I have already instructed thee in the
Mystery of the Clean and Unclean Animals. And there are some among the Modern Professors of the
Cabala, who say, that he who hath Knowledge of a Forbidden Woman, is at last clothed with the Body of
some Unclean Animal, or that of some noxious Insect or Reptile."

Jalkut Chadash - Section Achila: Fol. 20, Col. 4

"One ought at all the Three Meals on the Sabbath, to eat Fish, because into them go the Souls of the
Righteous; concerning whom it is written, (Numbers chap 11, V22) 'Shall all the Fish of the Sea, be
gather'd together for them, to suffice them?'.."

-
Emek Hammelech - Section Shaar tikkune batteschuva: Fol. 17, Col. 3

"There are other Transmigrations of Souls into the clean and unclean Species of Animals, likewise into
Vegetables and inanimate Beings, accord to the Wickedness of Men. The Merciful God preserve us from
them! The Righteous, whose Conversation is with the Law, and who have only Need of a Purification, are
judged in the Fishes of the Sea. And This is signified in what is said concerning the Righteous, Shall all the
Fishes of the Sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them? I will instruct thee by an Argument
grounded on proper Proofs. Yonder (Gen. 49) Mention is made of Gather together; and here (Num 11.
22) Mention is likewise made of Gathering together: And as Yonder, the Gathering together is mention'd
with Regard to the Righteous; so here likewise, the Gathering together is spoken of the Righteous.
Wherefore we are commanded to eat, upon the Sabbath, particularly at the Third Meal, which is the
Time of Well-pleasing, of the choicest Fish."

"He that offereth the Life of an Animal (in a ritual animal sacrifice), sometimes offereth with it the Soul
of a Man. And this is the Mystery of the Words, 'O Lord, thou preservest Man and Beast'. Wherefore we
are commanded, when we kill or slaughter, to use Knives without Notches: For who knows but that a
Soul hath enter'd into the Animal (we slay). And therefore, we are to choose for the Animal an earlier
Death. And he who eateth of the Joint of a living Animal, into which a Soul hath transmigrated, doth as
much as if he eat the Flesh of his Brother."

"And then they are permitted to enter into inanimate Beings; into Vegetables; into Animals, and into
Human Bodies; and likewise into the Seven Earths: After which, they pass into Hell; where they are
punish'd for the Space of Twelve Months. And then they mourn and ascend, and are a second Time
created (formed) to the End they may amend and be purified. But the Holy and Blessed God suffereth
them (after this new Forming) only to proceed (in their Return to Human Life) gradually, or Step by Step.
First, these Souls pass into dumb and inanimate Beings: From which they rise into Vegetables they
ascend into Animals; and from Animals into Men; passing (First) into Heathens or Slaves, and then into
Israelites. But sometimes it falleth out, that one of those Souls is deemed worthy to be excus'd the
passing through one or more of these Stages."

Zohar/Sohar's Origin
Quoted from the Treatise Sanhedrin (Fol. 33, Col. 2) we have the following story: "Rabbi Jehuda, and
Rabbi Jose, and Rabbi Shimeon sat by one another, and Jehuda ben Gerim, that is, who was born of
parents who had accepted of the Jewish Faith, sat by them; and Rabbi Jehuda began and said,' How
beautiful are the works of this people (the Romans), they have prepared markets, and made bridges,
and built bagnios': Rabbi Jose made no reply to this: But Rabbi Shimeon ben Jochai answered and said,
'All that they have ordered they have done it for their own convenience and benefit: They have
prepared markets to lodge whores in them; they erected bagnios for their lust and pleasure; and they
builded bridges on purpose to gather toll.' Then went Jehuda ben Gerim and related what they said, and
the Emperor was informed thereof; and by a sentence pronounced hereupon, it was said, Rabbi Jehuda
who spake in praise of the works should be exalted; Rabbi Jose who kept silence to be banish'd into
Cyprus; and Rabbi Shimeon, who despised them, to be slain. Hereupon Rabbi Shimeon, and his Son,fled
and hid themselves in the school, and his wife every day brought him bread and a cup of water, of which
they eat and drank, but the decree being severe, he said to his son, the women are light minded,
perhaps the Romans will tease your mother, so that she may discover and betray us; and they went and
hid themselves in a cave. And there happened a miracle; for there was a John's Bread-Tree (Egyptian Fig
Tree) for their food, and a spring of water created; and they pull'd off their clothes and sat to the neck in
sand, and studied the whole day. At the time of prayer they dress'd and cover'd themselves, and
performed their prayer, and then pulled off their clothes again, because they should not wear them out.
After they had been twelve years in that cave, there came Elias and stood at the entrance of the cave,
and said, who will acquaint the son of Jochai that the Emperor is dead, and his decree has come to
naught? Then went they out and saw that the people plowed, and sowed, and said, these neglect
eternal life, and trouble themselves in things which concern temporal life; and wherever they cast their
eyes on, was instantly consumed with fire. But then a voice was heard from heaven, saying Are ye come
out to destroy the world? Go again into your cave. And they returned and sat there for twelve months
longer, even a whole year. Hereupon said Rabbi Schimeon, the Wicked are punished twelve months in
hell' and there came a voice from heaven which said, Go out of your cave, and they went out. According
to the Jewish Notions it is taught, that this is the cave, wherein Rabbi Shimeon wrote that celebrated
Treatise, entitled Sohar (Zohar)."

Zohar quote - As above, so below

Rabbi Menasse ben Israel - Nishmath chajim: Fol.25, Col. 2

Tis proper for these to know, that the Experienc'd in the Cabala unanimously declare, that One Paradise
is above, and another here below: And they speak the Truth: For thus thou findest it in the Parascha
Shemoth of the Treatise Sohar (Zohar). The one is the upper Palace; where are Rivers of Balsam, and
Varieties of Pleasures for the Life to come. And the Lower Paradise, which is call'd the Lower Palace,
hath likewise Something of the Pleasures of the Life to come; but these Pleasures are not natural or
appropriate to the Place, but are deriv'd into it from the upper Palace. And the same is call'd Apirjon,
that is the Bride's Bed." In several other Places it is said, "There is a Paradise above in Heaven, and a
Paradise here below upon Earth."

The Location of Israel - The Lower Paradise.. Its Perimeter Encompasses A Gate
to Heaven and a Gate to Hell
Touching the Situation of the Lower Paradise, the Rabbi Shem Tof, in his Treatise entitled Sopher
Haemunoth (Fol. 65 Col. 1), delivers himself in the following Manner. " 'Tis clear from the Words of the
Scribes, that there is, on a certain Portion of this Earth, a Paradise; and that from thence issue Four
Rivers; one of which is Euphrates, which encompasseth the Land of Israel: And the whole literal Sense of
what is written concerning the Order of Creation, is Fact. 'Tis likewise asserted by the Knowing, that
Paradise is situate under the Middle Line of the World (The Equator) where the Days are always of equal
Length."

Concerning the Gates of the Lower Paradise, the Treatise Magelleh amykkoth (Fol. 78, Col. 2), Thus
informs us, "Paradise hath Three Gates; one of which is at Beth-shean. And Hell hath likewise Three
Gates; one of which is at Jerusalem." What these Words of the Rabbin lead to, or to what Rabbinical
Account or Hypothesis concerning Hell and Paradise they are referr'd, we are at a Loss to conceive.
(Eric's Note: This is all transcribed from a work from 1748, before the concept of Zionism came about.)

Rabbi Jehoscha ben Levi Outwits Angel of Death - All Goyim Go To Hell
"Then went the Angel of Death to the Rabbi Gamaliel, and said to him, Thus and Thus hath Rabbi
Jehoscha Ben Levi's done unto me. Then answer'd Rabbi Gamaliel, he hath serv'd thee right. But come, I
will send thee to him; and thou shalt say to him, I pray thee, search all Paradise and Hell and their
Treasure, and take their Description, and acquaint me, if any of the Gojim (Goyim - Gentiles - Infidels) be
in Paradise and whether any of the Children of Israel be in Hell. Then went the Angel of Death to the
Rabbi Jehoscha; Rabbi Jehoscha went and sought all over Paradise' and he found therein Seven Houses
or Dwellings. And each House was Twelve Times Ten Thousand Miles Wide (120,000 Miles Square). The
First House fronts the First Gate of Paradise, who of their own accord, and without any Compulsion,
embrac'd the Jewish faith. The Walls thereof are of Glass, and the Timber-Work of Cedar. Now when I
(that is, Rabbi Jehoscha; for the Person is chang'd by an usual Rabbinical Figure) went to measure the
same, the Converts were alarm'd, and would have hindered it. Then spake the righteous Prophet
Obediah, who was set over them, and said, Whence have ye deserv'd it, that he should dwell with you?
Whereupon immediately they permitted me to measure. The Second House fronts the Second Gate of
Paradise; and the Walls thereof are of Silver, and the Timber Work of Cedar. It is inhabited by Those who
have repented; and Manasseh, the Son of King Hezekiah, is set over them. The Third House is opposite
to the Third Gate of Paradise, and is built of Silver and Gold; and therein dwell Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,
together with all the Israelites that came out of Egypt, and All that were in the Desert, and all the Sons of
King David except Absolom. In that Place likewise live David and Solomon. In that Place likewise are all
the Kings of the House of Judah, except Manesseh, the Son of Hezekiah, who is set over all Those who
have repented. Over this Third House preside Moses and Aaron. In this House there is a Variety of Gold-
and Silver-Vessels' likewise Oil, and every Thing that's good. There are chambers with Beds and Stools
and Candlesticks of Gold; likewise Pearls and Jewels. When I asked, for whom they were prepared, David
answer'd and said to me, These Things are all for the Children of the World, from among whom thou
camest. Having asked him, whether Any from the Nations of the World (Goyim - Everyone else
who is not Jewish) and of the Children of Esau were there, he said to me, No: for the Holy and
Blessed God rewardeth them in their Life-time for All the Good they do: But at last they
inherit Hell. Whereas Everyone that is wicked among the Israelites is punish'd in his Life-time
but obtaineth the Life to come; as it is said, And repayeth those that hate him (Deut. 7, v 10).
The Fourth House fronts the Fourth Gate of Paradise; and is built as beautifully as the First Man was
form'd. The Timber-work is of Oil-Tree Wood (Olive-Wood). In this House Dwell the perfectly Righteous.
But why is it built with Oil-Tree Wood? Because their Days (the days of those Righteous) were bitter like
the Oil-Tree. The Fifth House is built of Silver, Gold, fine Gold, Glass and Chrystal; and the River Gibon
flows through the midst thereof. The Framework is of Gold and Silver, with an Odour far exceeding that
of the Wood of Libanon. The Beds likewise differ from the others; consisting of Gold, Silver, Spice, and
Scarlet and Blue Silk, and the finest Linnen, and Cloth of Goats Hair, wove by Angels. In this House
dwelleth the Messiah, the Son of David; and Elias of Blessed Memory: And therein is an Apartment
made of Wood, from Mount Libanon, with Pillars of Silver and a Carpet of Scarlet on the Floor; and in
this Apartment dwelleth the Messiah, who is belov'd of the Daughters of Jerusalem. 'Tis inlaid with Love:
And there Elias of Blessed Memory, lifteth up the Head of the Messiah, and layeth it on his Lap; and
then saith to him, Be at Ease for the End is at Hand, when thou art to redeem Israel. Thither also, every
second and fifth Day of the Week (namely, Mondays and Thursdays) Moses, Aaron, David, and Solomon,
together with all the Kings of Israel, and of the House of David, repair to him; likewise on every Sabbath
and Festival; and Lament with him, and comfort him, and say unto him, Be at Ease; rely on thy Creator;
for the End is at Hand. On every Fourth Day of the week (every Wednesday) Korah and his Company,
also Dathan and Abiram, repair to him and ask him, when will be the End of what is Wonderful? And
when wilst thou raise us from Death, and suffer us to come forth from the Abyss of the Earth? But he
saith to them. Go to your Fathers, and enquire of them. And when they hear this, they are asham'd, and
enquire not of their Fathers. When I approach'd the Messiah he asked me, saying, What do the Children
of Israel in the World from which thou commest? And I answer'd him, they are in daily Expectation of
thee. Whereupon he presently cried aloud and wept. In the Sixth house dwell those who walk'd in the
Paths of the Commandment. In the Seventh House dwell those who died of Sickness on Account of the
Sins of the Israelites."

Rabbinic Tales Should Be Taken Literally, Not Allegorically

Prominent Rabbi Meir: Treatise Avodath hakkodesch (Fol. 45 Col. 4):

"We have said already, in the 26th Chapter, that all that is recorded concerning the Creation of the
World, concerning Paradise, the Tree of Life, and the Tree of Knowledge, likewise concerning the Four
Rivers, is to be understood according to the Letter, and not figuratively, as Allegories or Enigma's: Far
from it? And therefore Everyone, who is call'd an Israelite, is obliged to believe, that All that our Sages,
of Blessed Memory, have written concerning Paradise, is literally the Truth, and neither Parable,
Hyperbole, nor Extravagance. And they all agree in This, so that we ought make no Manner of Doubt
concerning it, that there is, in particular a Paradise upon Earth."

-
Rabbinic Disrespect of Paradise (Heaven)
Treatise Bava Mezia (Fol. 114 Col. 2):

"He (Elias) conducted Rabba into Paradise; and then said to him, put off the cloak, and gather of those
herbs, and take of them along with thee. And Rabba gather'd and took of them along with him. But as
he was going away, he heard a Voice saying, who hath taken his part of Paradise like Rabba, the Son of
Abuchi. Then did Rabba throw the Herbs away; but he kept his cloak (in which, it is to be understood, the
herbs were put) and the Fragrant Odour of the herbs remaining thereon by means of the pressure (when
they were bound up in it,) he sold the same for upwards of 1,300." (in British currency in 1748)
