4.0 Design Approch

The detailed survey has been conducted at proposed bridge location in both upstream and
downstream directions which provide precise stream profile. The L-section and cross sections of the
stream are generated at all required locations including at bridge site, U/S & D/S of bridge location
from survey data.

Catchment area and main stream length has been marked on the toposheet as attached.

Discharge has been calculated using (i) Empirical method, (ii) Rational Method
. The highest value of these values is adopted as design discharge, provided it does not
exceed next highest discharge by more than 50 percent. If it does, restrict it to the limit.

The hydrological and hydraulic calculations has been done for 100 years return period.

5.0 Hydrological Calculation

5.1 Peak Design Discharge Calculation
The flood dicharge is computed by different methods as listed below. The values obtained are
compared and highest among these values has been adopted as peak design discharge.
(i) Empirical formula ( Dicken's method)
(ii) Rational method

(km 70.830 to km 115.400)

5.1.1. Emperical Method

Dicken's Formula
3/4
Q = CA (Ref: IRC:SP-13-2004, Cl.4.2)

Catchment Area A = 8.32 Sq. Km.

Coefficient C = 12
C = 11 -14 , where the annual rainfall is 60 -120cm.
= 14 -19, where the annual rainfall is more than 120 cm.
= 22 in western ghats
3
Peak Runoff in m /s
3
Q= 58.79 m /s

5.1.2 Rational Method

Catchment Area A = 8.32 Sq. Km. = 832 ha
Length of Longest River L = 3.921 Km.
Level at upstream of the stream = 269 m
Level at bridge location = 265.973 m
Height H = 3.027 m
Time of Concentration
3 0.385
tc = (0.87 x L /H) = 3.00 Hr. (Ref: IRC:SP-13-2004, Eq.4.9)

100 Year Return Period rainfall for 24 hr, F = 260 mm

(CWC Flood Estimation Report for Sub Zone 1e)
Conversion ratio for tc hrs as per CWC Flood
Estimation Report = 0.48
tc Hr Rainfall = 124.8 mm
Intensity of Rainfall Ic
Ic = (F/T) x((T+1)/(tc+1)) = 6.77 cm/hr (Ref: IRC:SP-13-2004, Eq.4.10a)

Spread Factor by f Curve from SP 13 = 0.99 (Ref: IRC:SP-13-2004, Fig.4.2)

Permeability coefficient as per terrain
condition P from SP 13 = 0.3 (Ref: IRC:SP-13-2004, Table 4.1)

Design Discharge Q100 = 0.0278 P f A Ic

Four Laning of Yamunanagar Panchkula Section of NH-73 Hydrological and Hydraulic Analysis
(km 70.830 to km 115.400)

5.2 Adopted Peak Design Discharge

3
Discharge by Dicken's method = 58.79 m /s
3
Discharge by Rational method = 46.53 m /s
Hence, Peak Design Discharge = 58.79 m3/s

There is no defined stream. U/S side Railway line exists and D/S is close to the bank of Yamuna River. There are
three minor bridge proposed and very close to each other. Thus common command area has been assessed and
design discharge shall be distibuted in each bridge by 33.33%
Thus , Design Discharge for MNB at ch. 71.945 Km = 19.59 cumec
Design Discharge for MNB at ch. 71.813 Km = 19.59 cumec
Design Discharge for MNB at ch. 71.650 Km = 19.59 cumec
