The Annual Staff chose the theme for the 1979 Btson Annual as "TIME" Ask yourself the question, "What is TIME?" Everyone has their
own definition for TIME. TIME could mean the mmutes on a watch . It also can mean the dtfferent decades tn a century TIME means a
multttude of thtngs to dtfferent tndtvtduals . The Annual Staff ptcked "TIME" because our JOb is to record the TIMES that happ1t!ed tn the
1978-79 school year We dtd thts by photographs, but also written words to help each one recall the times that happened .
The cover of the '79 Bison Annual represents the changes 10 TIME . Our styles tn dress, technology, and ltfestyles have changed constd-
erably. Think about the TIME past, the change to TIME present, and what TIME future will bring us.
The sections in this yearbook are recording the present. The first section is entitled Student Ltfe. In this, we have tned to capture TIME
from 845 to 3:35, the average night life of the student, and the thtngs that meant the most to us .

We are close to the e'ld of the 1970' s. We look back
over the years and see a lot of changes that TIME has
brought us. A ot of new fads were brought 1n dunng the I
78 79 school year A few of those would l'lCI.Jde the
change from the 52 Chevy's to the fast and sporty cars
Hairstyles !lave changed from long a'ld stra1ght to afros,
feathered ba\"'gS and the layered 'ook. C.othi\"'g has
changed a lot from m1n skirts to dresses below the
k'lees and blue jeans Pleated pants, velour tops, and
the plum color rea.ly made it b1g, too. Dane ng has
cha'lged 10 tile 70 s. The type of darc1ng we have now IS
known as D1sco .

LAST OF THE 70'S

Finishing A Decade
Everyone looks forward to graduat1on. Now 1n the last of
the 70 's the senors of 1979 are fimshmg a decade and be-
ginning to start a new decade as well as beginning an en-
tirely new 11fe The sen1ors see that 1t IS sort of scary experi-
ence, especially for those who have yet to seek what the
future has 10 store . The future frightens some, yet thrills
others who have the1r hfe patterns laid out and know what
they're gettmg into . If we could turn TIME back and start
over again, would we try harder, start th1nk1ng about the
future sooner? TIME has passed til ere's no turmng back
. . just a future to think about . and a great year to top
off the 1970's.

CLASSROOMS
The Green Prison
We were in the classrooms from 845 to 3:35 just about everyday in the years of 78 -
79 . In class there was a TIME to be senous and work, a TIME to have fun and have a
few good laughs . In class we sat, so secluded, surrounded by four green walls. Some-
how we have managed to make 1t through the year w1th our yawns and " forty wmks ".
Some shall come again to sit ms1de these green classrooms, yet some will never see
the smiling faces of classmates or hear the voices of teachers assigning homework
over the weekend , or ever see these green walls agam . No matter how good or bad the
classrooms were , we will always remember some of the TIMES that happened in the
classrooms

NIGHT LIFE
A Sample Night
It was Friday n1ght and we were all in town Each doing our own th1ng and go1ng our own way Part of us went to the football game as
the players, cheerleaders, or JUSt fans . Others headed out to the dnve 'n and watched a good movie, (or at least listened to 1tl Some of us
cru1sed the square. Honked at our fnends and occasionally squeeled our tires . A couple of us felt challeng1ng so we played a few games of
foosball or snooker. <The loser pa1dl. When the energy got low we headed out to the Snack Shack and the H1p Pocket to refuel. Then we
were off again, each doing his own thing, going his own way.

The Twenty-Five Minute Break
Lunch was a TIME where everyone rushed to either the cafeteria or the Snack Bar before a fero -
cious line formed . It was also the TIME where you can s1t back and relax between your classes
Lunch is the TIME you had a chance to talk to your friends and discuss lo.st nights game, the party
you went to, or the show you watched. It' s also a TIME at which you could do that last minute as -
Signment you forgot about. The food was less than exotic. Our diet cons1sted of luscious cheesebur-
gers and greasy donuts to peanut butter c~nnamon rolls and fish crispies . Gordon M1ller entertained
us in the Snack Bar with h1s s~nging . Lunch was the TIME that everyone thought there wasn 't
enough TIME to eat, yet you got so much talking accomplished . Then they wondered " Why d1dn 't
we have more TIME to eat?"

 PARKING-LOT
The parking lot is something almost everyone saw every day. You don't start using the parking lot until you are a Junior and a Senior.
Your Sophomore year you spend looking at the parking lot and drooling at all the new and latest hot rods. Wondering how fast it will get
through the quarter and wonder what size of engine is under the hood. You've probably heard someone say, "You've got my parking place."
With the reply being, "Well, it doesn't have your name on it." Most of the cars and trucks are parked in about the same places daily. Girls
put down sunvisors, look in the same mirror, and comb the hair and put on the makeup that they didn't have time to do earlier. To some the
parking lot is a place to meet your girlfriend or boyfriend every morning so that you can walk holding hands up toward the big doors of our
school.

Another busy year in the life of Buffalo High School ' s
Student Counc1l. They set out to accomplish many
things this year, and they did it. Stu-Co started out by
errecting a new lighted activity sign in front of the
school. They've done a good job of keeping the commu-
nity posted on school activities. Other activities spon-
sored by Stu-Co were a slave auction, where they sold
themselves to raise money for M.D . and to send fruit
baskets to the nursing homes. The football Parade , ti-
ger, roast, fun assemblies, Chrisumas Dance, Hat Day,
T-Shirt Day and Fabulour Fifty Day were only part of
the many Stu-Co sponsored activities this year. One of
the biggest Stu-Co activities was the Channel-21 Auc-
tion Drive where Stu-Co acted as chairmen of the Buf-
falo area " Go Getters. " The reason for undertaking this
Chairmanship was because the PBS station is widely
used in-throughout the school system . Stu-Co' s main
goal this year was to raise School Spirit. Proof of this is
shown in voter turn-out. Voter percentage was doubled
this year, led by the Freshman Class . Student Council
would like to thank Mr. Floyd Willis for his t1me, sup-
port, and help throughout this TIME.

The Vocal Music classes at BHS utilized much of their time preparing
for the annual Christmas and Spnng Concerts. They also practiced dili-
gently for the District and State Music Contests wh1ch are held
annually.
Another activity of Mixed Chorus and Glee Club this year included a
fund-raising chili supper, which was a complete success. The proceeds
from this project went toward the purchase of new choir robes.

One of the new clubs on campus this year was Music Club . This club con -
sists of freshman thru senior vocal and instrumental music students .
The purpose of Music Club is to further an interest in all phases of music,
to encourage improvement in scholarship, and to serve the school and com-
munity through their musical abilities.
Music Club raised money in various ways for such things as the music ban-
quet, letters, medals, and helped pay for their new choir robes .

towns and many eventful activities. The Gals marched at the S.M.S. Homecoming Parade, marched at Coffee-

tine at the Football and basketball Festivities.

What has forty-two legs, twenty-one multi-
colored faces, and wears pajamas? Can you
guess? It was the '78-'79 Clowne Troupe.
This year, unlike last year, Clowne Troupe
was open to any high school member who
wanted to try out. Members this year in-
cluded; Jenme Ratcl1ffe, Lori Parker Paro,
Bobby Applegate, Kathy Holcomb, Jo Atwa-
ter, Sally Roberts, Lynn Wolfe, Peggy
McKeel, Kathy Yates, Joanne Ratcliffe, Beth
Cantlon, Cheris Wingo, Melissa Kay, Melinda
Kay, Christy Beltz, Wendy Jones, Shelly
Hamlet, Gloria Ray, Margaret Parks, Mary
Hatcher, and Laura Ritter. Clowne Troupe
participated in the Football Homecoming As-
sembly and Parade. They had other activities
planned for the months of December and
January. Bad weather, however, prevented
these activities. All and all, the clowns en-
joyed bringing a few more laughs into the
lives of all that saw them perform.

The members of the BHS Art Club
th1s year came from both Art I and Art
II classes, and included people who were
first year members all the way to a few
third year members. Whatever the abil-
Ity and experience all the members
worked hard together throughout the
year on a number of projects for both ART CLUB OFFICERS
school and community.
The beginning of the school year
found Art Club members working to-
gether with Music Club for a Fine Arts
Float in the Football Festival Parade;
and Art Club members played an impor-
tant role in the 1978 PTA Carnival by
assisting with stage decorations. The
BHS Art Club has participated in vari-
ous art exchanges with other schools,
the annual Buffalo Christmas Parade ,
they helped spread the Christmas spirit
by decorating the BHS campus in De -
cember, held an Art Show for the PTA
in February, and presented the high
school with a school crest for per-
manent display.

 The PTA Carnival took in the most
money in carnival history. Events
leading up to carnival night, such as
the Slurp-A-Thon, Kissing Booth,
Sponge Throw, Radio Raffle, Car
Wash, and Bake Sales contributed to
the money intake . Competition was at
its best in the high school. This was
shown by the numerous amount of
cakes .

 CHRISTMAS
Christmas spirit was bountiful on campus. Art
Club decorated the wmdows and doors . Disco
fever was hot at the Christmas Dance sponsored
by Student Council. Lateresa Harmon and her
date won the disco contest. On Christmas Sp1rit
Day, students wore red and green . Council
members were sold as Santa's Helper's. The
money raised went to charity funds. Principal,
Floyd Willis participated as an elf, also. He wore
a pink dress, earrings and tennis shoes . Mis-
tletoe day was also celebrated.
Voter turnout for Miss Merry Christmas was
large. Freshman candidate, Jane Roos, was
elected Miss Merry Christmas. Her attendants

 Donkey Basketball
On the night of February
3, there was a lot of action
and excitement kicked at
B.H.S. At the donkey basket-
ball game, there was never a
dull moment. Everyone, in-
cluding the donkeys, had a
great time.
These competing were the
FFA Juniors and Sen1ors,
LoUisberg Vo-tech faculty,
Mr. Burson along with the
second FFA team, and the
FHA girls. The FFA Juniors
and Seniors won .
The donkeys were fur-
nished by Crosby's Donkey
Basketball.

running ... kick ing . . . running .. .
blocking ... runnrng . .. receiving .. .
the first day of official football prac-
tice . The weather conditions of late
August were not desirable for the
drills Coach Warren Kennedy would
need to have the athletes run to pre-
pare them for the upcoming season .
Besides having to work around the
men who were building our new
track, our players and coaches had to
rebuild a team . Many of them had
never worked together before and
were unsure of each other. They had
just sixteen days to prepare for the
first game of the season .
The playing season opened Sep-
tember first with the Bisons traveling
to Lebanon . The players were pre-
pared for the duration. School spirit
was at a high that had been absent
for a period of TIM E. Cheerleaders
led the largest Pep Club rn a number
of years. Despite the spirit, we lost
17-0.
Camdenton was our next con-
tender. This Friday nights' ritual was
to be on our home turf. With losing
to Camdenton last year, 40-0, our
young athletes practiced longer

and harder. We scored for the first

time this year when Terry Shew-
maker connected with flanker Mike
Peace with a 30-yard touchdown
pass. We scored again when Larry
Richardson scooped-up a fumbled
ball and ran for an 87 yard touch-
down. Despite our efforts we lost, but
held last years runner-up 3A State
Football Champs to a 20-12 decision.
We lost our first two conference
games with Ozark and Rogersville at
home. After losing the first four
games, enthusiasm was still high. Our
losses were attributed to the com-
pounded mjuries on the Varsity
squad. Most of the injuries were
caused in practice as well as in actual
games. Other attributing factors
were inexperienced returning let-
termen, the loss of three year start-
ing graduates, and rookie Seniors.
The last home game before Foot-
ball Fest1val was played against El
Dorado Springs. Scoring in this ball-
game was Russell Brethower when
he caught a kick-off and charged for-
ward 85 yards for a touchdown. John
Janke crashed into the end zone for
two more points. El Dorado Springs
ended up on top, 20-8.
Bisons hit the road playing Confer-
ence teams Marshfield and Willard,
but fell behind in both games making
their record 0-7.
October 20th we faced Republic in
our Football Festival bout. Student
Council sponsored several activities
which boosted school soul. Football play-
ers were grand marshalls of the Festival
Parade. At the game the players and par-
ents were honored. The crowd was large
and enthusiasm filled the air, which help-
ed Bisons score the most points in one
game than they had all year. We lost the
game, but it didn't matter, because the
events up to the game and the Festival
dance were a success and everyone enjoy-
ed themselves.

our biggest school rival. We lost in the
cold temperatures.
Our last game of the season faced
Branson on their turf. We lost but
added a new school rival.
A quote that has meaning to the
1978 football season: "Without a sec-
ond place team there would be no num-
ber one." Even though we were anum-
ber two team, our players never let
down, were good sports, and kept a
good attitude.

Final Score
As the unpracticed players step on
the court, their footsteps cut through the
silence of the desolate gym . The man-
ager throws the balls on the floor not
realizing the number of TIMES the balls
would be used during the next few
months. A long, lanky player out-
stretches his arm to scoop up the ball.
Hesitantly, he bounces the ball as he
makes his way to the top of the key.
With sudden ease he rushes to the goal
and ... SLAM DUNK !
The 1978-79 Basketball Season had
begun . Head basketball coach , Marty
Garrison , has suicides, sta1rs, and many
drills in store for his team. This was not
a winning season for the Bisons. Our
first game was with Waynesville on their
home court. We lost, 46 to 63, but this
did not hurt the fighting spirit of the Bi-
sons. Throughout the season they
fought with undieing enthusiasm and
devotion .
In taking a look at the scorebooks,
the record is not pleasing to the eye; 7
games were won with 19 losses. How-
ever, you must consider that these were
not landside losses . In seven conscutive
games

we lost by a collective total of twenty -

three points. Th1s averages out to
roughly three points per game. Even
though we were not victorious the
games proved to be a good spectator
sport. These small marginal losses gave
us confidence that we could come back
and win .
One of the more exciting games we
played was with the Ozark Tigers . Ozark
had won every game in the Central

We finished the C.O.C. games with the
Marshfield Bluejays. The court was hot Rick Freeman , and Coach Jacky Payne.

with a sizzling score of 79 to 54 .
An unwelcomed pattern seemed to
haunt the Bison ballclub . The team
showed their colors through the first
and second quarters, but during the
third quarter they seemed to lose
ground . The result is our many, small
marginal losses.
In our last battle on the court, we
played Central, the first seated team, in
the Regional Tournament. We surprised
everyone by being on top when going
into the locker room at half time. We
gave the Central Bulldogs a fight for
their seat by keeping the point spread
from two to four point until the final
score showed our loss, 52 to 58 .
The losing season is contributed to
several causes. The main problem was
the lack of varsity experience with only
one returning varsity member . With
football season ending before basketball
season hardly began there were several
injuries left to heal. Every team needs

ward, Mark Roberts held the best atti-
tude of the group and helped keep team
spirit going.
Next year's main concern is the post-
man, but Garrison has good outlooks
for next year's team. He will have five
returning experienced varsity members:
Earl Wallace, Danny Pierce, Sam Dryer,
Pat Bla1r, and Greg Hicks. Several of
the JV players look promising for the
next season.
Boys sports has not been what we
had anticipated and hoped for this year.
Although we would have liked more
wins, the sportsmanlike conduct that
our athletes held with high esteem has
not been matched in TIMES past.

B.H.S. Girl ' s Softball Team - and so
they did . The softball girls, for the
second year in a row, under the
coaching of Debbie Cooper, went to
state . And , for the second year in a
row, they took third place at state .
Ranked along with the Third in State
honor, the girls also received first in
district, and first in regionals .
The softball team seniors include:

Terri Bartee, Manager. The Juniors
include: Carlene Morgans, Right

Basketball
The girls were on the floor, the
whistle was blown, the action started.
The first game? No, practices: Before
any real game was ever played the
Bison girls were hard at work learn-
ing new plays, practicing their shots
and scrimaging against each other.
Every day 7th hour and after school
the girls could be seen in the gym
practicing, while Coach Cooper's
vocie was heard giving them instruc-
tions, and incouragement.
The A team started off their 26
games season by losing the 1st three
games, but they came back and won
the next two. The remaining season
went back and forth, sometimes for
the Bisons, sometimes not. The bi-
ggest against Marshfield with the Bi-
sons, winning by 19 points. The final
statistics showed Varsity ll-15, B
team 5-10. Girls Varsity Basketball

PROGRESS IN OUR TIMES.
1978-79 was a TIME when a lot of
change took place at Buffalo Schools.
Progress was the major pinnacle. An
addition of a new school sign and
usual up-keep of buildings was only a
start. After many crossed fingers and
the coming and going of bond issues
Buffalo built and completed one of
the finest equipped tracks in the con-
ference. New and more efficient win-
dows added to the rear and facade
of the main high school building.
1978-79 was a TIME of change, and
a TIME of progress.
