ENGINEERING MECHANICS II ASSIGNMENT #10

Composites, Torsion and Bending

Composite Stresses
#1 An 6 foot long No. 1 Southern Pine Timber column is reinforced with 1080 OQT 900 steel L6x6x3/4 on each
corner as seen below in Figure 1. The materials are rigidly attached and act as a single member, and deform at
the same rate. Compute the force in each material and the shortening of the beam if a compressive load of
60000 lb is applied.
(2)

#2 A 14 inch by 14 inch concrete post made from 5000 psi rated concrete is 10 feet tall and reinforced internally by
nine 0.50 inch diameter ASTM A242 structural steel rods as seen in Fig 2. If a compressive load of 250000 lbs is
applied to this column, calculate the stress in the steel and the concrete, and the total amount of deformation of
the column.

Torsion
#4-50 Figure P4-50 shows a stepped shaft in torsion. The larger section also has a hole drilled through
it.
A) Compute the maximum shear stress at the step for an applied torque of 7500 in-lb.
B) Determine the largest hole that can be drilled and still maintain the stress near the hole or below
that at the step.
(2)

#4-71.M For the shaft shown in Fig P4-71, compute the angles of twist in pulleys B and C relative to A (Consider
location A stationary). The steel shaft has a diameter of 35mm throughout its length. The torques are T 1
= 1500 N-m, T2 = 1000 N-m, T3 = 500 N-m. The lengths are L1 = 500 mm, L2 = 800 mm.
Ans: θAB = 0.0636 rad, θAC = 0.0976 rad
(2)

#5 For the steel shaft shown in Figure P4-88, compute the angle of twist of one end relative to the
other of a torque of 750 in-lb is applied uniformly along the length and the reduced section A-A is 1.4
inches instead of 1.5 inches

Stress Due to Bending

#6 Compute the maximum x-x axis stress due to bending in a HSS 76 x 51 x 6.4 ( Sxx = 2.33 x 104
in3, Syy = 1.82 x 104 in3, not in 6th Ed.) if it is subjected to a bending moment of 150 N-m in that axis.
What would the stress be in the y-y axis if the load was subjected across the y-y axis?

#7-76 In an amateur theatre production, a pirate is to “walk the plank”. If the pirate weighs 220lb, would
the design shown in P7-76 be safe? If not design one that would retain the general appearance of a
“plank”.
(2)

#7-139 A solid circular bar has a diameter of 50mm and a length of 350 mm. It is installed in the frame
of a machine as a cantilever and carries a single static concentrated load of 2.40 kN on at its end.
Would the bar be safe if it was made from ASTM A48 grey cast iron, grade 40? Consider only stress due
to bending.
Ans: d = 46.0 MPa, max = 68.4 MPa, unsafe.
