NOTE: We will learn about Polyatomic Ions later, they aren’t scary, you will have a typed list in
your guided notes for the ones I want you to know & if you are responsible, you will have notes to
check out during quiz & exam time.

Formation of Nonpolar Covalent Compounds
Nonpolar Covalent – electrons are equally spread out within the space that the group of nonmetal
or metalloid atoms occupy
Polar Covalent – electrons are unequally spread out within the space that the group of nonmetal or
metalloid atoms occupy (partial positives d+ & partial negatives d-)
Delta – greek letter d, which means ‘partial’ in chemistry
Which atom(s) carry a partial positive (d+) after the chemical reaction takes place?
Which atom(s) carry a partial negative (d-) after the chemical reaction takes place?

Ionic & Covalent Recap
DEFINITIONS:
o Diatomic Elements – nonpolar covalent bonding of two atoms of the same name on the
periodic table as they most naturally occur in the universe
o Ionic compounds – chemical compound comprised of ions held together by electrostatic
forces (electric charges at rest)
o Covalent compounds – two or more nonmetal atoms bonded by sharing valence electrons;
can be polar or nonpolar

Directions for BLOOMS – Higher Order – ANALYZING:
Students will organize a series of playing cards which have picture of Nonpolar Covalent
Formations, Polar Covalent Formations, and Ionic Formations into 3 stacks and chart those
equations in the table listed. There should be 5 images per type of Compound Formation.
