That’s great then! Okay,

the title of the story?

The Last Leaf, ma’am.

Very good. Next question,

who is the author of the
story?
Sydney Porter, ma’am. But he is
most commonly known as O. Henry.

That’s right! Give me the

characters in this story.

Johnsy/Joanna
Sue
Mr. Behrman

Alright, well done. I’m glad to

know that you understood
and remembered our
previous discussion.

v. Motivation

Before we begin, I will first

show you a video clip which
is related to our lesson for
today.

[The teacher will show a

video about Mr. Bean’s
effort to grow a watermelon]

2|Page
[Students will watch the video clip]

Class, based from the video,

what do you think is it
about?

With determination, you will be able

to achieve great things but if you cheat,
then it may do you no good, ma’am.

vi. Lesson Proper

Well said! Class, in our

previous lesson, the
determination of Mr.
Behrman for Johnsy to get
well, was evident in the
story, right?

Well, today, our lesson is

somehow similar to that as
well. But we shall see what
the differences are as we
progress through the story.

The video also has something

to do with our lesson for
today.

For your assignment last

meeting, I told you to have
an advanced reading about
the short story “A Grain As
Big As A Hen’s Egg” by Leo
Tolstoy, right?

Yes, Ma’am.

Now, did you all read the

story?

Yes, Ma’am.

Well done, class. Now, let us

move on to the story.

Class, do you know the name

of the author?

Leo Tolstoy, ma’am.

That’s right!

A Grain As Big As A Hen’s Egg

was written by a man named
Leo Tolstoy. He is a famous

Russian author. He was born
in the year 1802 and he is
from an aristocratic family. In
his early years, he actually
struggled in life due to his
gambling debts. Anyway, he
was also a soldier. Later, he
wrote what he experienced
and witnessed in the
battlefield and that was his
first book which later helped
him to be known as one of
the best writers in Russia.
One of his works is our
lesson for today which is “A
Grain As Big As A Hen’s Egg”.

[Reading]

Okay, now go to your groups

quietly and leaders, please
stand.

Leaders, I want you to pick a

stick which will determine
what element you will
discuss in front later.

Sticks :
Purple – Characters
Blue – Setting and Point of
View
Yellow –Plot
Red – Conflict
Green – Theme and Moral of
the story

Reminder: class, everybody

in the group should know the
topic because I will choose
randomly among your group
members who will discuss in
front. Understood?

Yes, ma’am.

Before we begin the activity,

I would like you all to read the story first for
5 minutes just to refresh your minds and you
can use your task as a guide to know the
important points that you should discuss in
front. Any questions?

None, ma’am.

Alright then, you may start.

[Post – reading]

Alright, class, now I shall

choose among your group
who will discuss. I will be
giving you 3 minutes to
discuss in front for each
group. Let’s start with group
1. (Teacher will choose
randomly among all 5
groups)
[The chosen student will discuss in front]

Okay, now class, let us see

whether you really
understood the lesson. I
have a ball here and I will
throw it randomly. The
person who catches it will
have to answer my question.
Are you ready?

Yes, ma’am.

[teacher will throw the ball

asks a question regarding the
lesson]

[students will answer the question]

vii. Valuing

What do you think is the

king’s characteristic?

Greedy, ma’am.

Greedy? Why do you think

so?

Because in the story ma’am he wanted

more of those grains that is why he is
looking for ways to find those grains.

Good point, there.

Comparing to the people
nowadays, do you think we
share the same
characteristics as the king in
the story? Why?

5|Page
Yes, ma’am because we are never
satisfied with what we have. We always
want to achieve more and get more.

As you have seen from the

video just now and the story
that you have read, can you
tell me what is the difference
between the people from
the past and in the present?

It shows how different the world is now

from today because before, people work
hard to get what they want or need.
Nowadays, people get what they want in
other ways. We are more dependent on
other people or other things.

Impressive answer. That’s

right! So class, let us make a
difference and be more
appreciative of what we
have. If you want to achieve
more, then, strive harder to
do it. You will surely reap
whatever you sow.

IV. Evaluation

Okay, class, I have here envelopes which contain the activity that you should do with your
group. Leaders, just now, you have chosen a stick with your respective colors, right? Now,
come forward and get your envelope. Inside, you will find the instruction and materials
needed for each activity.

Sticks :
Purple – You will need to solve the puzzle, tape it together and interpret it.

Blue – Write a meaningful slogan on how we can help to preserve the nature and relate
it to the lesson for today.

Yellow – Write a 6 word story that shows a meaningful description of how we should
value the nature and relate it to our lesson.

Pink – Write a 5 line poem (Quintain). Which shows on how to be satisfied with what
we have.
