INSTRUCTIONS

1. This paper contains FOUR (4) questions.

2. Answer THREE (3) Questions only:
Question ONE (1) from Section “A” is Compulsory and Answer any TWO (2) from
Section “B”
3. The following documents are appendices to the question paper: Tables for conductor cross
section determination, manufacturer’s data of typical fluorescent lamps, earthing and bonding
size in relationship with supply line.

4. Do not forget to write your Registration Number.

5. Write all your answers in the booklet provided
6. Do not write any answers on this questions paper.
7. Start each question in a NEW page
Section A
Question I [20 marks]
1. Differentiate the “connected load” and “maximum demand” [2 marks]
2. What is the role of earthing in electrical engineering? [2 marks]
3. What do you understand by TN-C-S in earthing system? [2marks]
4. Explain the lamp efficacy. What is its efficacy on monthly electricity bill of user of
electricity? [2 marks]
5. State the types of supports of floodlights [2 marks]
6. Can RCBOs be used in electrical installation with TN earthing system? Why? [2 marks]
7. What is the role of fire alarm systems? [2 marks]
8. The 4 core electrical incomer cable is supplying a building with 50kVA, 25m from the utility
power lines at 400V between phases. The grounding system is created near the building. The
working temperature is 400C.
i. Determine the cross-section of the phase wire, assume the voltage drop will be within
acceptable limit [3 marks]
ii. Determine the ground wire size [1.5 marks]
iii. Determine the bonding wire size [1.5 marks]

Section B
Question II [15 marks]
A three phase asynchronous machine of 10kW power rating at 380 V. The power factor is 0.8. The
working temperature is 400C. The starting current of the motor is limited to 1.15 times nominal
current.
a. Determine the suitable cross sectional of conductors to supply the motor at 5m away from the
distribution board. Remember that 1m = 3.28feet [10 marks]
b. Determine the CB rating to protect the motor [ 5 marks]
Question III [15 marks]
1. Outline the main components of a fire alarm and warning system. [3 marks]
2. Select a suitable detector for the following locations: [3 marks]
a) A general office
b) An engineering workshop
c) A kitchen
d) An escape corridor.
3. Determine the number of heat detectors required for the office if the dimensions are 30m
length and 20m width. Show design layout. This room is used for restaurant. [3 marks]
4. Identify the types of extinguisher to be installed in the room [3 marks]
5. Set heat detectors in the following architecture drawing [3 marks]

Question IV [15marks]
A. The office measures 12 x 8 m with a floor-to-ceiling height of 3 m. The office is used for
general office duties, with illumination level of 500lux, with a working plane height of 0.6 m.
The room has two doors to a corridor in the wall opposite the window wall. The reflection
factors are 70% ceiling, 50% walls and 20% floor. Maintenance factor is 0.8. Luminaire type:
single 1.5 m, 58 W fluorescent lamp fitting, incorporating a white louvre attachment, initial
lumen output of 5200 lm. SHR=1.5
i) Determine the utilization factor [2
marks]
ii) Determine the number of luminaires [2
marks]
iii) Determine the lighting layout [2
marks]
iv) Calculate the total power consumption for this lighting systems [2
marks]
v) Determine the circuit breaker rating to protect this circuit. The working voltage is 230V
between phase and neutral with a PF of 85% [2 marks]
vi) Determine the types and number of ON/OFF manual switches for this systems. [2
marks]
B. A roadway of 94.5km length has a width of 10m. Metal halide lamp types with 35000 lumens
as initial lumen output are being used to light the roadway. Utilization and maintenance
factors are 0.5 and 0.6 respectively. Determine the number of masts required to light the
roadway at an average illuminance of 20 lux. Consider constant spacing between luminaire
fittings. [3marks]
