ABSTRACT

The study was conducted to understand the problems faced by the students in learning
Mathematics. Data’s were collected from the students based on their interest, attitudes, attention span
and also on two psychological variables i.e. stress and fear, regarding the subject. The investigator
analysed these data’s and found that most of the students have learning problems due to the stress and
fear related to the subject.

INTRODUCTION

Learning disabilities are neurologically based processing problems. These processing problems can
interfere with learning basic skills such as reading, writing / or math. They can also interfere with
higher level skills such as organisation, time planning, abstract reasoning, long term memory and
attention. It is important to realize that learning problems can affect an individual’s life beyond
academics and can impact relationships with family, friends and in the workplace.

Stress and fear are some of the major examples of learning problems. Stress is a state of physical
and mental overload caused by stimuli and situations of various origins like examinations,
interpersonal hostility and so on. Stress related tension is dangerous for physical and mental health.
Fear is always accompanied by tension, agitation, activity lacking in harmony and changed
perception.

OBJECTIVES

 To find the students learning status or problems.

 To identify the causes for the lack of interest.
 To know the level of comprehension of the students.
 To analyse the level of stress and fear in their learning environment.

METHODOLOGY

To study the problems of learning Mathematics, the investigator conducted a survey among 35
students of St. Anne’s Girls Higher Secondary School. A questionnaire was used as a tool, consisting
of 40 questions.
ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

From the study, it was found that only 54% students like to study Mathematics and 46% students
does not show any interest towards the subject. Around 74% students know about the difficulty and
planning task and 26% students find difficulty in maintaining attention for more than 15min. Attitude
influences an individual’s choice of action and responses to challenges. Here, 60% students shows
positive attitude towards Mathematics.

46% students have stress when they are unable to understand the class and 54% students are
comfortable and they do not show any stress. 35% students fear the subject because they are unable to
complete the answers and acquire minimum score in exams. 65% students do not exhibit any
disinterest or fear towards Mathematics, when compared to other subjects.

CONCLUSION

Through the study, I found that most of the students are interested to study Mathematics. They have
learning problems due to their tension or fear of the subject. The students does not have a strong
foundation in the basic concepts and ideas in Mathematics. Even though they have good attention
span, their disinterest in the subject and minimal knowledge of the basics leads to poor achievement in
the subject. The students refuse to think out of the box. They rely mostly on their prescribed text.

Each student is unique and hence must be provided with suitable assistance and guidance in
accordance with the problems they face in the process of learning. Students need to be encouraged to
learn each subject effectively. Both parents and teachers should try to instil an interest in learning.
Students also need to have their own part to play in tackling the problems they face while learning.
