This  article  explains  the  difficulties  that  the  African  Americans  experienced 

during  segregation.  The  author  described  the  impact  it  had  on  Phyllis  Allen  as  a

young  girl,  as  she  used  to  identify  as  ​coloured  o

identified  them  as.  However,  once  she  grew  up  she  realized  she  was  more than a 

coloured  ​or  N
​ egroe  ​woman.  This  source is reliable because the essay was written 

based on an interview on a national public radio station, during a segment called 

All  Things  Considered  on  July  11,  2005.  This  essay  reinforces the theme of identity 

through  the  unique  circumstances  a  young black woman experienced during the 

times  of  segregation,  which  allowed  her  to  understand  people's identity does not 

remain  constant  throughout  their  lives.  This  essay  shaped  my  research  as  it 

reminded  me  that  your  identity  changes  overtime  and  is  unique  to  each

This  podcast  discusses  gender  identity  and  the  misconceptions  society  has 

about  transgenders,  simply  because  they  are  uneducated.  Jackson,  a 

transgender  male  explains  his  personal  experiences  and  answers  common 

questions  society  has  about  trans  people.  He  hopes to educate the public about 

the  community,  so  they  are  not  met  with  disgust,  disbelief  or  confusion,  but 

rather  the  same  courtesy  everyone  else  is  given.  This  source  is  reliable  because 

Ted  Conference  LLC  is  a  globally  known  media  organization  that  posts 

informational  topic  discussions  and  rants  online.  Jacks  podcast  reinforced  the 

theme  of  identity  through  the hopes of being treated equally for showing his true 

identity.  This  allowed  me  to  understand  identity  should  be  disrespected.  The 

podcast  shaped  my  understanding  of  identity  because  everyone  is  unique;  they 

simply require society's respect​ ​to confidently share their identity.

This  poem  discusses  gender  equality  through  a  young  girl’s  dream  to  become  a 

Cuban  drummer.  Although  she  was  inspired  by  the  sound  and  became 

passionate about playing, she was not allowed to play because they believed

that  only  boys  should  play  the  drums.  This  source  is  reliable  because  the  Poetry 

Foundation  is  a  non  profit organization that promotes poetry globally. The poem 

reinforced  the  theme  of  identity  through  her  aspirations  and  perseverance  that 

made  her  a  drummer,  regardless  of  society's  opinions.  This  poem  shaped  my 

understanding  of  the  theme  of  identity  because  many  people,  woman  in 

particular, have to fight to show their true identity.

The  short  story  discusses  a  twin  study  in  California  that  studied  the  habits  and 

similarities  of  twins,  specifically  identical  sisters  Amanda  and  Samantha.  ​Twin 

Study  ​explained  the  strength  of  genetics  and  the  unique  similarities  twins  have

that  siblings  do  not.  This  source  is  reliable  because  ​Zoetrope:  All-Story  h

received  many  major  story  awards,  including  the  National  Magazine  Award  for 

Fiction,  as  well  as  it  is  dedicated  to  the  best  short  fiction  and  one  act plays. This 

story  reinforces  the  theme  of  identity  through  the  sisters  determination  to  have 

their  own  identity  and  not  be  known  to  be  unique  for  having  an  identical  twin. 

This  story  shaped  my  understanding  of  the  theme  of identity because of the twin 

sisters  determination  to  have  their  own  identity.  Although  it  is  unique  to have an 

identical  twin,  an  individual  is  much  more  than  they  appear  to  the  public  and 

want to have their own identity.

The  film  discussed  the  story  of  a  struggling  musician  who is about to give up her 

dreams  of  becoming  a  singer.  Until  one  night  Jackson Maine, a famous artist fell 

in  love  with  her  and  her  sound.  He  inspired  her  to  continue  and  helped  her  turn 

her  dreams  into  reality.  This  source  is  reliable  because  it  is  a  well  known 

American  entertainment  company  with  celebrity actors starring in the film. ​A Star 

Is  Born  reinforced  the  theme  of  identity  through  Ally’s  unique  talent  and 

determination  to  present  herself  as  a  singer.  This  allowed  me  to  understand  the 

importance  of  never  giving  up  on  your  true  identity.  The  film  shaped  by 

understanding  of  identity  because  sometimes  you  require  the  help  or 

encouragement of someone else to confidently share your identity.
