Advanced Production Engineering Field Design Project

Deadline: December 12th 2018 Hamid Karami

This project is to develop a production plan for a new onshore oil field. Reservoir data, fluid
properties, and pipeline profile are given in detail as follows. You are assigned to design the
production plan for this oil field for at least 5 years. The main objective is to maximize
production out of the network of wells. Your proposed production plan should consider at least
the following aspects:

1. Determine the optimum pipeline and tubing sizes. Install chokes for any of the wells that you
deem necessary.
• The objective of this part is to maximize production of each well. Pay attention to
the changes in pressure losses and multiphase flow patterns by changing
diameters. Discuss the logic that you use to select pipeline and tubing sizes.
2. Determine the temperature-pressure profiles from downhole to surface separator.
3. Should the pipelines be insulated or heated? Why or why not?
4. Consider different artificial lift methods, including ESP, PCP, sucker rod pumps and gas lift.
These methods can be installed at the beginning, or after a few years, and for one or more of
the operating wells.
5. Analyze potential flow assurance issues; i.e., erosion, wax deposition, hydrate formation, and
gelation, and propose solutions.
6. Discuss the uncertainty generated by applying different multiphase flow models in tubing and
pipeline. Will the choice change your sizing decisions?
7. Consider an economic component of this project (a rough approximation is fine; you may
consider the oil price of $50 per barrel or gas price of $2 per Mcf). Is this project
economically feasible?

• Surface ambient temperature = 50 °F.

• Borehole diameter = 8 inch.
• Outer diameter of casing = 7 inch
• Inner diameter of casing = 6.25 inch
• Annulus between borehole and casing is cemented.
• Estimated heat transfer coefficient of wellbore = 2 BTU/hr/ft2/°F
