shear and combined loads. Connection design.
Credit: 3 u.
Prerequisite: CE 155

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, the student is expected to:

1. understand the behavior of steel members under different types of

Course Requirements:

1. Attendance is required. A student who is absent for more than SIX

times will be given a grade of 5.0 if he/she does not drop the course
before the official last day of dropping on April 17, 2018.
2. THREE (3) long exams will be given in the course.
3. Any missed long exam will be given a grade of ZERO.
4. The grading system will be as follows:

LEA = Average of Long Examinations

SQA = Average of Short Quiz & Assignment
PROJ = Project (design of a steel structure; will be given after the 1st
long exam)

EXEMPTED: Gen. Ave. (GA1) = 0.675 LEA + 0.225 PROJ + 0.10 SQA
U NIVERSITY OF THE P HILIPP INES D ILIM AN
INSTITUTE OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

NOT EXEMPTED: Gen. Ave. = 60% GA1 + 40% FINALS

5. A student may be exempted from the final exam if he/she satisfies the
following:
a. A General Average (GA1) of 72 or better.
b. No long quiz less than 60% (all exams must be passing). The
project grade must also be passing.

Note: A student who is exempted from the final exam may opt
to take the final exam wherein he/she has equal chances of
increasing/decreasing his/her grade. The final grade of a
student who is exempted will be based on the General Average
BEFORE Finals (GA1).

6. Long examinations will be three to four questions.

7. Complaints will be entertained for a period of one week after the exam
result has been returned.
8. During the exam, observe the following rules:
a. Use only long/yellow pad paper.
b. Write your NAME and SECTION on the upper right hand
corner of each page. Also write your name and numerals I II III
and IV at the back of the last page.
c. Start each problem on a new page and enclose your final answer
in a box.
d. Use only BLACK or BLUE ink.
9. An intellectual dishonesty case will be filed against anyone caught
cheating in any form with the possibility of getting a grade of 5.0 and
one-year suspension or expulsion from the university.

During long examinations, students are allowed to open their AISC

manuals as reference. However, the writing of formulas, procedures,
tables, etc. that are not explicitly written in the manual is NOT allowed
and is a form of cheating.

Grading Scale:
Final Grade Equivalent Grade Final Grade Equivalent Grade
92-100 1.00 72-below 76 2.25
88-below 92 1.25 68-below 72 2.50
84-below 88 1.50 64-below 68 2.75
80-below 84 1.75 60-below 64 3.00
76-below 80 2.00 Below 60 5.00

Note: The professor reserves the right to modify the above rules as long as it benefits
the students.
