Lettering in accordance with the standards:

There are two types of letterings in technical drawings: Straight lettering, and inclined lettering. We are
going to use inclined lettering. The standards of lettering is given in code ISO 3098_1 1974 E,TS EN
ISO 3098. These regulations are summarized in the following tables.

Lettering B (values are given in millimeters)

Characteristic Ratio Dimensions

Height of capitals h (10/10) h 2.5 3.5 5 7 10 14 20
Height of lower case letters (without c (7/10) h - 2.5 3.5 5 7 10 14
stem or tail)
Spacing between characters a (2/10) h 0.5 0.7 1 1.4 2 2.8 4
Minimum spacing of base lines b (14/10) h 3.5 5 7 10 14 20 28
Minimum spacing between words e (6/10) h 1.5 2.1 3 4.2 6 8.4 12
Thickness of lines d (1/10) h 0.25 0.35 0.5 0.7 1 1.4 2

Note that spacing between two characters may be reduced by half if this gives a better visual effect.

Paper sizes, line types and their usage

Paper sizes

The size of the paper depends on the dimensions of the drawing. The standard for dimensions of the
drawing paper is given in TS88-1. These are given in the following table. The area of an A0 size paper
is 1 m2. There is a 1:√2 ratio between the height and length of the paper. The height is 841 mm and the
length of the paper is 1189 mm. All other sizes of papers are calculated accordingly.

For this course, A3 sized paper will be used.

Lines

Drawings are produced by different kinds of lines (full, dashed, center etc.) having different thicknesses.
A drawing can only be understood correctly if rules and codes for lines are applied correctly.

These different kinds of lines are summarized in the hand-out sheets. Please pay attention to these
when drawing.

Please note the following guidelines when drawing:

The table top must be clean and smooth. Do not keep unneeded equipment on your table.

Keep your drawing equipment clean.

Do not slide your T-square and triangles across the paper.

The drawing paper must be pinned to the table in an appropriate manner.

Do not use the lower edge of your T square to as a horizontal base for triangles.

Do not cut you paper using edge of your T square as a guide.

Before actually starting your drawing, the axis lines must be determined and drawn.

In a technical drawing, similar lines must have the same thickness.

Special care must be given to intersections, lines that cut across etc.
