Appendix – Terminologies

Terms commonly used in hydroponics

ALKALOIDS - any of a class of nitrogenous organic compounds of plant origin that have
pronounced physiological actions on humans. They include many drugs (morphine,
quinine) and poisons (atropine, strychnine).

CLOSED SYSTEM - a closed system refers to a hydroponic system whereby the same
nutrients or nutrient solutions are repeatedly recycled.
DO- Dissolved Oxygen is the amount of gaseous oxygen (O2) dissolved in the water.
EC- the ability of water to conduct an electricity. Salts or other chemicals that dissolve in
water can break down into positively and negatively charged ions. These free ions
in the water conduct electricity, so the water electrical conductivity depends on the
concentration of ions.
GREENHOUSE – A greenhouse (also called a glasshouse or hothouse) is a building where
plants such as flowers and vegetables are grown. It usually has a glass or translucent
plastic roof.
HYDROPONIC SYSTEM - A hydroponic system refers to the tools and equipment that
are packaged together in order to grow plants hydroponically.
HYGROMETER – Instrument for measuring relative humidity in the atmosphere. A
hygrometer will save time frustration and money.
MEDIUM – simply refers to the material that your plants grow in. In traditional gardening,
the medium is soil. In hydroponic gardening it can be perlite, coco coir, rockwool,
sponge and polyethylene fiber.
NFT – The nutrient film technique (NFT) is a hydroponic growing technique where a small,
shallow stream of nutrient-rich water is recirculated over roots through a channel,
gutter, or tube.
NODE – the point on a trunk or stem where a branch or leaf is attached.
NUTRIENT – plant food, essential elements N-P-K, secondary and trace elements
fundamental to plant life.
NUTRIENT SOLUTION - Nutrient solutions are available as a commercial product or in
some cases hydroponic gardeners may mix their own. The nutrient solution is the
primary nutrition plants receive in hydroponics, so it is essential that the solution is
properly proportioned to maximize success.
pH – a scale from 1 to 14 that measures the acid to alkaline balance of a growing medium
(or anything). In general plants grow best in arrange of 5.8 -6.8 pH.
POLYETHELENE FIBER - a synthetic fiber consisting wholly or chiefly of a polyester
especially: a quick-drying resilient fiber made in filament and staple form from
ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid or its dimethyl ester and often blended with
other fibers (as wool or cotton)
PVC – Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is one of the most commonly
used thermoplastic polymers in the world (next to only a few more widely used
plastics like PET and PP). It is a naturally white and very brittle (prior to the
additions of plasticizers) plastic.
RAUWOLFIA – Rauwolfia (Rauwolfia serpentina), also spelled ravolphia, is a medicinal
plant in the milkweed family. The root of the plant is ground into a powder or sold
in tablets or capsules. It is a compound commonly used in Asian medicine, which
includes traditional Ayurvedic medicine native to India.
RECIRCULATING SYTEM - A recirculating system refers to a hydroponic system in
which water is never diverted from the system. The water/nutrient solution flows
through the growing medium into a collector where it is recovered, and then it is
reused over and over again in the same way.
RESERVOIR – any container of a variety of constructions which holds water in reserve
use.
SUBSTRATE - a substance or layer that underlies something, or on which some process
occurs, in particular.
YIELD - produce or provide (a natural, agricultural, or industrial product).
