Modernity and Religion

Simone Lutzko

1. The period of “Modernity” is believed to have began around the years 1500 and continue
onto present day, as this period represents extensive transformation throughout this part
of history (the past five-hundred years), therefore explaining the name “modern”.
2. The term “secular”, means to be separate from God. As the concept of Modernity
progressed, many areas of life within European and western culture that were once
considered inseparable from, and even dependent on religious views, began to gradually
distance themselves from their attachment to God. Economics became less political,
politics became less religious and science began to be referenced less and less to the
bible. The term secularity derives from the Latin word which translates to: “of the time”,
this generally refers to a generation or span of 100 years, and comes from the
controversial belief that God will exist infinitely.
3. It is difficult for me to always find the time to be religious, go to church or remember to
speak to God in saying a prayer every once and awhile .
4. I have always had a really good relationship with my mother, so I generally talk to her
about everything and ask for advice or questions about the world.
5. A movement which was created in and which expanded with the concept of modernity.
Rationalism is the view that all in the world has a reason or cause, and that these reasons
and causes influenced matters regarding religion, ethnicity, opinion and demeanor.
6. Where one finds evidence, learn or come to conclusions about a particular subject
through observing and performing experiments. Empiricism was one of the first times
during modernity where religion began to not be viewed as the sole reason for things and
where science and religion began to be separated.
7. Agnostic people and Atheist people actually have very different views overall. Agnostic
means “not to know”. These people are generally open-minded and believe that the
existence of a higher being is possible, yet it is impossible for humanity to know for
certain. Atheists on the other hand, simply dismiss the possibility of a God altogether.
8. Humanism revolves around aspects of humanity and how they uphold and have
importance in our world. This ideology centers around rationalism, human life and
justice, declaring how crucial it is for us to be unique and have ethnics.
9. Secularism is the general idea that there should be a distinct bridge between the
government, along with its politics, economics and establishes and religion.
10. Secularization is the act derived from the ideology of secularism of actually separating
the two from each-other (culture and the public from religion and its components).
11. The term rational refers to knowledge being consumed of a particular concept based on a
certain cause or reason; it is believe through rationalism that everything must have a
significance behind it.
12. As Galileo and other figures like him submerged who began to separate religion from
science, the modern world started to put emphasis upon three particular concepts: what
could be seen in the modern world, empirical evidence and rationalism. Overall,
humanity was meant to begin to question all that happened around them and really think
and doubt that God and religion were the reason for all events on Earth.
13. The fundamentalist movement is a movement that branched off from the main religious
group in response to the difficulty of humanity in separating itself from religion. These
groups are generally opposed to secularization and the development of international
connections. Fundamentalists have specific beliefs and values to which they believe are
unmitigated and which must be upheld, unchangeable throughout all of history. The
fundamentalist movement acts in a way and believes that theirs is the best and only way
of thinking, thus very oftenly wreaking havoc around them.
14. Catholics have always searched to develop a deeper relationship with God and acts as he
would as much as possible. The end goal for Catholics is to find eternal life in heaven
with God.
15. My grandma has always attended mass and had a strong spiritual connection with God.
She finds strength in God and finds meaning through him whenever our family suffers a
loss or goes through a hardship.
16. According to the Church, religious freedom is important because as God created us, he
also gave us freewill to choose our own paths and therefore it would not be correct to try
and force or convince another to be apart of a religion that that do not feel a personal
connection to.
