I.

Objectives:

At the end of the activity most of the students should be able to;

(a) Explain the processes that occur along convergent boundaries (two continental plates
converging).
(b) Determine the consequences of colliding continental plates.
(c) Perform an activity on the Convergence of Two Continental Plates

I. Motivation

Greetings!

Video presentation on the Two

Continental Plates Converging
II. Discussion

(Present a picture showing continental

plates colliding)
When two continental plates
converge, a collision zone is
formed. Unlike the other two
types of convergent boundaries,
subduction ceases for this
particular type of convergence.
No trench, no volcano, and
definitely no island arc are
created during this process.
Instead, what is created is a large
group of tall mountains called
mountain range.

III. Application

A. Pre-activity
Now before we begin the activity listen
carefully to the instruction.
a) You will be group into 5
groups. Each group has 4
members.
b) Each member should have a
role/participation in the
activity.
c) After the activity, each group
should present their activity.
d) You will be rated using a
rubric.

B. Activity Proper

Objectives:
a) Explain the processes that
occur along convergent
boundaries (Two Oceanic
Plates Converging).
b) Determine the consequences
of colliding continental plates.

Procedure:
a. On a piece of paper, flatten
the modeling clay with the
palm of your hand.
b. Cut the clay into four strips;
each strip should be 0.5 cm
thick, 4 cm wide, and 12
cm long.
c. Put 4 strips one on top of the
other.
d. Place a block of wood at each
end of the clay strips and
slowly push the two blocks
together. Observe what
happens to the clay.

C. Post Activity:

1) What happened to the strips of

clay as they were pushed from
opposite ends? The strips of clay were pushed towards
each other and moves up.
2) If the strips of clay represent the
Earth’s lithosphere, what do you
think is formed in the
lithosphere? Mountain ranges is formed during this
event.
3) What other geologic event could
take place with this type of plate
movement aside from your
answer in Q2? Earthquake may occur because of the
plate movement.
4) In terms of the consequences on
the Earth’s lithosphere, how will
you differentiate this type of When two continental plates converge,
convergent plate boundary with a collision zone is formed. Unlike the
the other two? other two types of convergent
boundaries, subduction ceases for this
particular type of convergence. No
trench, no volcano, and definitely no
island arc are created during this
process. Instead, what is created is a
large group of tall mountains called
mountain range.
Generalization

1. What happens when two

continental plates collide? When two continental plates converge,
a collision zone is formed. Unlike the
other two types of convergent
boundaries, subduction ceases for this
particular type of convergence.
2. What geologic features might
form when two continental plates No trench, no volcano, and definitely
collide? no island arc are created during this
process. Instead, what is created is a
large group of tall mountains called
mountain range.
D. Assessment

The student will be assessed based on

the activity.
