Row 122
[1] On a comfortable length of thread
and leaving a 1-yd. (.9 m) tail, work
in ladder stitch (Basics, p. 80) to make
a ladder of 25 background-color 110
cylinder beads. These beads form row
12 of the band; rows 1–11 will be
added later. Zigzag back through the
ladder to stabilize it.
[2] Work row 13 in brick stitch (Basics)
as follows, referring to the pattern,
reading it from left to right:
• First stitch: Pick up two background-
color cylinders, sew under the thread
bridge between the first two cylinders
in the previous row, and sew up through
the second cylinder just added.
• Subsequent stitches: Pick up one
background-color cylinder, sew under
the next thread bridge in the previous
row, and sew up through the cylinder
just added. Repeat this stitch to the end
of the row, picking up the appropriate
color cylinder for each stitch.

[4] Work row 123 as follows:
• First stitch: Pick up two background-
color cylinders, sew under the thread
bridge between the second and third
cylinders in the previous row, and sew
up through the second cylinder just
added. This begins the taper at the
end of the bracelet.
• Subsequent stitches: Work stitches
with one cylinder each, as before.
[5] Work rows 124–133 as in step 4.
[6] Sew through the beadwork to
exit the far-right cylinder in row 122.
Working in flat peyote stitch (Basics),
add background-color cylinders to this
edge of the pattern, thereby making the
two edges symmetrical and centering
the design. End the working thread.
[7] Using the tail, work rows 1–11
as in step 4.
[8] Align half of the clasp on the end
of the bracelet just completed. Using
the tail, sew through the beadwork to
exit a cylinder near the first loop of
the clasp. Sew through the loop and
back through the cylinder your thread
is exiting. Sew through the adjacent
cylinder, sew through the loop, and sew
back through the cylinder your thread
is exiting. Retrace the thread path of
both connections.
[9] Repeat step 8 to attach the remain-
ing two loops of this half of the clasp,
and end the tail. Add 12 in. (30 cm) of
thread to the other end of the bracelet,
and attach the loops of the other half
of the clasp in the same manner. w

As an alternative to step 6 (adding
a row of peyote stitch to one edge),
you could work an increase brick
stitch at the end of every other row
as you make the band. To do so,

row, so that you have two new

bridge. Remember, you would only
do this for every other row.

[1] Prepare the loom with 33 warp
threads according to the manufacturer’s
instructions, or watch our how-to
video — go to www.BeadAndButton.
com/videos, and search “loomwork.”
[2] Tie a comfortable length of thread
to the far-left warp thread, leaving a
6-in. (15 cm) tail. Tie the thread near
the top of the loom if you wish to work
the pattern from top to bottom, or tie
the thread near the bottom of the loom
to work from bottom to top. Thread the
loomwork needle on this thread.
[3] Reading the pattern from left to
right, pick up the appropriate beads for
the first row (either the bottom row of
the pattern or the top row, depending
on your choice in step 2). Sew behind
the warp threads (figure 1), use your
finger to push the beads up between
the warp threads (figure 2), and sew
back through the beads over the top
of the warp threads (figure 3).
[4] Work as in step 3 for the entire
pattern. Using the #12 beading needle,
end your thread when it gets short
(Basics, p. 80), and then add a new
thread as in step 2.
[5] When you complete the pattern,
use the #12 beading needle to end
the working thread and tails. Remove
the beadwork from the loom, and
do the same for each warp thread.
[6] Add 10 in. (25 cm) of thread at one
end of the beadwork. Center half of the
clasp on this end, so that the loops are
hidden behind the beadwork. Stitch
each loop to its neighboring beads,
retracing the thread path of each con-
nection. End the thread. Repeat at the
other end of the beadwork. w

ing a 6-in. (15 cm) tail. Reading the
pattern from left to right starting in
the lower left-hand corner, pick up 24
cylinder beads for the first two rows:
an A, three Ds, four As, seven Cs,
four As, and five Ds. Work in flat even-
count peyote stitch (Basics) to make
the band. End and add thread (Basics)
as needed. This pattern will create a
7-in. (18 cm) bracelet. Add or omit
rows if needed, but make sure the total
number of rows is divisible by four.

stitches with Cs. Continue working
in odd-count peyote stitch (Basics)
following the established color pattern
until the strip has 11 As running down
the center.
[5] Place the 44 mm glass ring on the
band so the inside of the ring rests next
to the start of the strip and about one
quarter of the ring extends past the end
of the band (figure 2). Wrap the strip

the bridge, and make another branched
fringe, using colors as desired and occa-
sionally adding a 3 mm crystal or a 4 mm
leaf charm before the final cylinder in
a branch. Alter the number of beads
in each branch for an organic look.
[8] Repeat step 7 to make another
branched fringe off the bridge.
[9] Repeat steps 6–8 twice, spacing
the bridges about ½ in. (1.3 cm) apart.
[10] Sew through the beadwork to exit
where the ring touches the other edge
of the band, and work one more bridge
with branched fringe. End the thread.
[11] Add a new thread at the other end
of the band, and exit 12 rows from the
end and 10 beads in from one edge, with
your needle pointing toward the other
edge. Work as in steps 3 and 4 to make a
strip with about 24 As running down the
center. Do not end the thread.
[12] Pass the strip through the open-
ing between the ring and the opposite
end of the band. Wrap the strip around
the ring, and pull it so the ends of the
band line up next to each other.
[13] Decide where the two snaps will
go, and sew one half of each to the top
surface of the band and the other half
of each to the bottom surface of the
strip. End the thread. w

[1] On a comfortable length of Fireline,
pick up a color A 5 mm Tila bead, a
color B 5 mm Tila bead, an A, and a B.
Sew through all four Tila beads again to
form a ring, sewing through the same
holes as before and leaving a 6-in.
(15 cm) tail. Form the Tila beads into
two stacks of two beads each (figure 1,
a–b). Sew through the open hole of both
Tila beads in the last stack (b–c).
[2] Working in two-bead ladder stitch,
pick up a B and an A, and sew through
the Tila beads in the previous stack and
the two Tila beads just picked up (c–d).
Continue through the open hole of the
two new Tila beads (d–e). Repeat this
stitch, flip-flopping the A and B each
time, until the band is ¼ in. (6 mm)
short of the desired bracelet length.
End and add thread (Basics, p. 80)

You can use either SuperDuo or Twin stepbystep

two-hole beads for this bracelet, but
if using Twins, choose beads that are
similar in size and shape. We’ll refer to
the two-hole beads in the instructions
as SuperDuos and as having a left side
and a right side; orient your beads
accordingly.
Bracelet base
[1] On 2 yd. (1.8 m) of thread, pick
up two 2.5 x 5 mm SuperDuo beads,
a 150 seed bead, a 3 mm bicone crystal,
and a 150. Orient the SuperDuos as

so you’ll be working with doubled thread.
[2] With one needle, pick up an 80
seed bead, and center it over the knot.

an A. With the other needle, pick up an

Leather band
[1] Using a leather punch or other
piercing tool, make a hole about 1⁄8 in.
(3 mm) from one end of the leather
band. Measure about 7⁄8 in. (2.2 cm)
from the first hole, and make another
hole. Slide the clasp onto the leather,
and fold the leather to align the holes.
Slide the longer portion of a 6 mm com-
pression rivet through the holes, from
the bottom to the top. Place the cap of
the rivet onto the stem, cover the rivet
cap with the rivet-setting tool, and
strike it gently with a hammer several
times to compress the rivet (photo a).
[2] Wrap the band around your wrist
to determine the desired finished length,
keeping the length of the clasp in mind.
Cut the band about 1⁄2 in. (1.3 cm)
longer than this length. Repeat step 1
at this end of the band to create the
slot for the clasp catch.
[3] Make a mark at the center of the
band, and then make a mark about
7⁄8 in. (2.2 cm) to each side of the center
mark. Punch a hole at each mark.
[4] Slide the stem of a rivet into the
center hole, from top to bottom. This
rivet will be installed “upside down,”

to use chainnose pliers to grasp
and pull your needle in some

threads.
[4] Place an end cap over
the opening at one end of the
bracelet. Add a new thread to

Flower band
[1] On a comfortable length of condi-
tioned thread (Basics, p. 80), pick up
four 4 mm fire-polished beads, and tie
them into a ring with a square knot
(Basics), leaving a 10-in. (25 cm) tail.
Retrace the thread path through the
ring, and exit the 4 mm opposite the tail
(photo a). This is the first right-angle
weave stitch.
[2] Using 4 mms, work a stitch of right-
angle weave (Basics), retrace the thread
path, and exit the first 4 mm added in
this step (photo b).
[3] Pick up a 6–7 mm accent bead, and
using a firm tension, sew through the
opposite 4 mm in the stitch. Sew back
through the accent bead and the 4 mm
your thread exited at the start of this
step (photo c). Retrace the thread path
if needed to stabilize the accent bead.
There may be thread showing where
the accent bead attaches to the 4 mms,

Snap closure
[1] Add 12 in. (30 cm) of thread to the
starting end of the base. Position one
half of a snap closure on the back of
the base within 3⁄8 in. (1 cm) of the end.
Stitch the snap to the base. Repeat to
attach half of the other snap closure
on this end. The two snaps should sit
side by side. End the thread.
[2] Work as in step 1 to attach the
remaining halves of the snap closures
to the top side of the other end of the
base, making sure they line up with the

these stitches three times to complete
the round (figure 16), and sew through
the beadwork to exit the next edge B
in the base.
[8] Work the steps for “Crystal square
embellishment” and “Hollow embellish-
ment” for the length of the base, work-
ing the motifs off of subsequent Bs and
leaving the last 3⁄8 in. (1 cm) of the base
unembellished for the snap closure.
End the thread.
[1] Add a comfortable length of thread
to the starting end of the bracelet, and
exit the first bead along one edge.
[2] Pick up three color G 150 seed beads,
sew down through the next edge bead
to create a picot, and continue up through
the following edge bead. Repeat this
stitch once.
[3] Sew down through the next edge
bead and up through the following edge
bead twice without adding any beads.
You will be stitching behind the three
Cs added in the crystal square embel-
lishment, and there will be one cylinder
between the embellishment and the
bead your thread is exiting.
[4] Work as in step 2 to add nine picots
along this edge, and then work as in
step 3 to stitch behind the next crystal
square embellishment. Continue in this
manner to complete this edge, and end
the thread.
[5] Work as in steps 1–4 for the remain-

(Basics), work 17 rows with B 3 mms,
using three color A 150 seed beads to

[1] With the 18-in. (46 cm) tail exiting

the next 3 mm, and sew up through the

this step and the first 110 just picked
up (figure 11, a–b). Working off of the
newly added 110s instead of 3 mms,
repeat this stitch (b–c). Continue in this
manner until you have a strip with a
total of 11 rows. Test the bracelet for fit,
keeping in mind the size of the clasp,
and adjust the number of rows if needed.
Pick up an 110, and sew down through
the entire adjacent column of 110s and
a 3 mm (figure 12, a–b). Zigzag through
the end row of 3 mms, sew under the
adjacent thread bridge, and exit the end
3 mm (b–c). Repeat this step on the
other edge of the base.
[2] Sew through the beadwork to exit
one of the single 110s at the tip of a
strip with the needle pointing away
from the other strip. Pick up five 110s,
and sew through both tip 110s to form
a ring (figure 13). Retrace the thread
path through the ring several times,
and end the tail.
[3] Open a 4–6 mm jump ring (Basics),
and attach half of the clasp to the seed

[5] To join the ends of row 1: Pick up
a 3 mm, sew through the 3 mm at the
other end of row 1, and continue through
the 3 mm added in the previous step.
Retrace the thread path of the join, exit-
ing the 3 mm added in this step (photo e).
[6] Pick up a 150 seed bead, and sew
through the next 3 mm along this edge.
Repeat this stitch twice to add a total
of three 150s (photo f).
[7] Sew through the next six edge 3 mms,
and then repeat step 6. Sew through all
the 3 mms and 150s along this edge,
using tight tension (photo g). This is the
front of the bezel.
[8] Sew through the beadwork to the 80s
on the back of the bezel, and exit so that
you are in position to add a bead directly
opposite a 150 on the front.
[9] Pick up an 80, and sew through the
next 80 along this edge. Repeat this
stitch twice to add a total of three 80s
(photo h). Make sure the 80s added in
this step are positioned directly opposite
the 150s on the front of the bezel.
[10] Using loose tension, sew through
the next six 80s, and then repeat step 9
(photo i). This is the back of the bezel,
and the 80s added in these steps will be
the connector 80s.
[11] Insert an 18 x 13 mm stone into the
bezel so that the front of it is against the
front of the bezel (photo j). Sew through
all the 80s on the back of the bezel to
tighten it around the stone. End the tail
(Basics) but not the working thread.
[12] Make eight bezeled stones.
Assembly
[1] Lay out your bezeled stones in the
desired order, and turn them upside
down so their backs are facing up.

exit an outer connector 80. Sew through
one loop of the clasp, continue through
the next connector 80, sew through the
other loop of the clasp, and continue

[4] Using the working thread of the
new bezeled stone, work as in step 3
to connect the next stone. Continue
working in this manner until all the
stones are connected. Using the last
remaining working thread, attach the
other half of the clasp as in step 2.
Bracelet with
14 x 10 mm stones
Note the difference in size between
the 18 x 13 mm stones (photo m, top)
and the 14 x 10 mm stones (photo m,
bottom). You may find that you prefer
the daintier size stone for your bracelet.
Bezeled stones
Work as in steps 1–12 of “Bezeled stones”
above with the following changes:
• In step 2, work row 1 until it has just
13 stitches, including the ring from step 1.
• In steps 3 and 4, replace the 80s with
110 seed beads.
• In step 7, sew through just four 3 mms
before repeating step 6.
• In step 8, sew through the beadwork to
the 110s on the back of the bezel, and exit
so that you are in position to add a bead
directly opposite a 150 on the front.
• In step 9, replace the 80s with 110s.
• In step 10, sew through just four 110s
before repeating step 9.
• In step 12, make a total of 10
bezeled stones.

BASICS all you need to know to get started
THREAD AND
KNOTS
Conditioning thread
Use beeswax or microcrystalline wax (not
candle wax or paraffin) or Thread Heaven
to condition nylon beading thread and
Fireline. Wax smooths nylon fibers and
adds tackiness that will stiffen your bead-
work slightly. Thread Heaven adds a static
charge that causes the thread to repel itself,
so don’t use it with doubled thread. Both
conditioners help thread resist wear.
To condition, stretch nylon thread to
remove the curl (you don’t need to stretch
Fireline). Lay the thread or Fireline on top
of the conditioner, hold it in place with
your thumb or finger, and pull the thread
through the conditioner.
Adding thread
To add a thread, sew into the beadwork
several rows or rounds prior to the point
where the last bead was added, leaving a
short tail. Follow the thread path of the
stitch, tying a few half-hitch knots (see
“Half-hitch knot”) between beads as you
go, and exit where the last stitch ended.
Trim the short tail.
Ending thread
To end a thread, sew back through the
last few rows or rounds of beadwork,
following the thread path of the stitch
and tying two or three half-hitch knots
(see “Half-hitch knot”) between beads
as you go. Sew through a few beads after
the last knot, and trim the thread.

nent or at least 1¼ in.

you work, the smaller

Crimping
Use crimp beads to secure flexible
beading wire. Slide the crimp bead
into place, and squeeze it firmly with
chainnose pliers to flatten it. Or, for a
more finished look, use crimping pliers:
[1] Position the crimp
bead in the hole that is
closest to the handle of
the crimping pliers.
[2] Holding the wires
apart, squeeze the pli-
ers to compress the
crimp bead, making
sure one wire is on
each side of the dent.
[3] Place the crimp
bead in the front hole
of the pliers, and posi-
tion it so the dent is
facing the tips of the
pliers. Squeeze the
pliers to fold the crimp
in half.
[4] Tug on the wires to
ensure that the crimp is secure.
Opening and closing loops and
jump rings
[1] Hold a loop or a
jump ring with two
pairs of pliers, such
as chainnose, flatnose,
or bentnose pliers.
[2] To open the loop
or jump ring, bring the
tips of one pair of pliers
toward you, and push
the tips of the other pair
